Frozen ride is replacing Maelstrom~official announcement

Tom Staggs officially announced today on the Disney parks blog that a new Frozen ride will be replacing Maelstrom.
Not too much info was given on the ride other than it's definitely happening.
I personally don't really care about Maelstrom but I know it's beloved by many. I am most worried about WS being packed with hundreds of children and parents, in this tiny space, waiting for this Frozen ride.

He also announced that Elsa will now be lighting the Castle Christmas lights everyday during Christmastime in MK, instead of Fairy Godmother and the Frozen cast will be joining the MVMCP parade.

Here is the link to the announcement:

Maelstrom's last day of operation is October 5, 2014. Frozen ride is *tenatively* slated
To open in 2016

Hopefully they'll hold off bringing the house down at Maelstrom until after our trip there in a week! I can't imagine it would be that fast, but it'll be good to get one last trip through the frozen tundra, dodging polar bears and trolls and sailing around the oil rigs!

The attraction was in serious need of re-working - but I suppose a Frozen themed ride wouldn't be too bad either Smile!

I'm honestly ok with it. I got to ride it one last time this past trip and I gave it a silent goodbye as we left since it was so painfully obvious that this was coming. I agree with you Annie that I'm worried about that area becoming completely bogged down now...but Epcot is definitely in need of a few more FP+ worthy attractions and this should fit the bill!

Today was the first time that I read we are losing Maelstrom! eek

While I am sad to lose one of my EPCOT favorites, I'm excited to learn about what it will be replaced with. I think Frozen is a great movie and it'll be fun to see what Disney does with it.

I'm pretty bummed to learn about the fairy godmother not lighting up the castle during Christmas anymore... But at least I was able to see her do it in 2013! It was so magical and made me sobb like a baby... As almost every show does in MK.

I think you're absolutely right Allie that Epcot is in desperate need of more FP+ worthy attractions. I'm just kind of bummed about it being in WS. For me, WS has always felt like the most "adult" section of any of the parks. Probably because most children get bored there quicker than most other parks laugh
Although I adore children(I was a preschool teacher and Kindergarten teacher for years!) I enjoy the Adult oasis of the WS. A Frozen ride will surely change that quite a bit. But I will just schedule our Epcot visits a little differently and deal with it! Plus, I want to ride it too biggrin

Well! We haven't done Maelstrom yet on this trip, but if it's closing in early October we might head back to Epcot and ride it one last time.

Hmm, not sure how I feel about this, although I have yet to see the movie. I guess I will reserve judgement until I see the new attraction.

I enjoy Maelstrom and I feel better about the change knowing that I'll get to ride it one more time, but I'm not so attached to it that I'm unwilling to embrace a Frozen re-theming. If the meet & greet is going back there, I hope they figure out a better way to make it work than what they had originally! Although maybe by 2016 that won't be an issue anymore. That timeline concerns me more than anything. I was hoping that they were just reworking the story, but that seems like a lot of time. I hope that they're not altering the ride component. I wonder what they'll do with the film...

I know, I know - what rock have I been hiding under? laugh

I will see it, but I'm definitely in no hurry. My favourite Disney movies are the live action ones I grew up watching - Escape to Witch Mountain, all the Herbie the Love Bug movies with Dean Jones, the original Shaggy Dog with Fred MacMurray and the remake (Shaggy DA) with Dean Jones and of course all the movies Kurt Russell did for Disney as the character Dexter Riley in the 70's. biggrin

I love the movie. But I just do not think that EPCOT is the place for Frozen. The world showcase is supposed to be about diffrent countries and cultures, not movies. I believe this will also make the Norway pavillion unaccessable.

Joe and I finally watched the movie last night. Loved it! I liked Maelstrom - it was fun, rarely had to wait and it was a nice cool-off break as we walked around World Showcase. Can't wait though to see what the new attraction is.

I love Frozen muchlove
However, I did enjoy Maelstrom and will miss it. I'm excited for the Frozen attraction, I just kind of wish it was at HS instead of Epcot

My thoughts exactly. It was already bad enough with the just Frozen meet and greet spot alone in Norway way back when. A Frozen ride might have the queue extend all the way to Future World! eek I have to think that when Anna and Elsa will eventually do return to their meet and greet in Norway exclusively, it will most certainly be a FP+ option or bust, like it is right now at the Fairytale Hall. Or if need be, have the Frozen sisters in both the MK and Epcot, something a lot of fans were clamoring for. Things may settled a bit regarding their current meet and greet but then again, this is the down period but the holiday rush will come soon and make the parks crowded.

I never rode Malestrom so I can't really form an opinion on whether or not the ride was top quality or a ride that needed to be replaced. I do agree that Epcot needs new attractions but they'll need more than one. If you add at least three new rides to Future World, those ridiculous wait times for Soarin' will be a thing of the past. Not necessarily make Soarin a walk on per say because it's still is and always will be a family friendly attraction but at least would cut down the average wait times in standby.

As for the Frozen ride itself, if the ride turns out to be nothing more than a Frozen equivalent of Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid, they'll be a blizzard of criticism. I joked on my Facebook status to let the storm rage on regarding the decision whether you're for or against it. Well, all I can say, the cold bothered a lot of people yesterday and even more today and in the days to come.

I agree as well. As a future elementary school teacher I really do love children but WS has always felt so much more mature due to the lack of children. But I know that children and parents of children are Disney's main demographic so of course they are going to try and appeal to them... I just hope they find a way to handle the crowds. The Norway pavilion isn't that big of an area and I would hate to see overflow make the surrounding areas unaccessible..

I am heartbroken an original ride is going in favor of an IP it's really sad. I'll be ok if disney add a character ride to each country but to have this in Norway and just donald in Mexico is insulting, do it all or leave it alone.

I wonder if this is part of the reason they were testing those return time passes for the standby queues of a couple of the attractions. Maybe they were looking for a way to cut down on the congestion that they knew this would cause in Norway.
