We're thinking of a family reunion next December and aren't sure how the grand gatherings thing works. Do we work with someone at Disney to plan it? Do we have to pay them? Do the group things cost more?

You can work through a Disney travel agent or call your own travel agent. I do believe the group things cost a bit to set up (e.g. a private cruise to watch Wishes).This page is Disney's official magical gatherings how-to section--they should be able to guide you with grand gatherings as well.

I think it would be fun to have a big gathering at WDW. Of course allegedly this is just because I don't plan these things...
