Hats!

I'm sure this post is inspired by them talking about Hats on GMA right now... but...

It never ceases to amaze me, that when I wear a hat anyplace beside Disney, people always comment. Usually older gentlemen that comment on my hat and call me "young lady". However, it seems that when down in the World the general population embraces headgear in a much more extensive manner.

For both young and old Hats are a fantastic way to help fight the Florida Sun and stay healthy while touring. It's an easy preventative measure that can help you express your personality too. Disney sells lots of fun and stylish hats to help protect it's guests! We always seem to buy more hats every time we go to Disney.

To get the most sun protection out of a hat it's recommended that your hat have at least a 3" brim.

Do you wear heats in Disney? Do you wear hats outside of Disney? Let's see pictures of your hats!

Open weave hat made of seagrass with black Mickey scarf, bought at MouseGears.
Kristen & Friends

The kids bought all three of these hats at Disney. Kirk's hat was from the Pirate Gift Shop, I can never remember the name of that style, it's not a fedora, the brim is different. White floppy hat made of ribbon with a silver Mickey embroidery on back, about $25 at Disneyland (also came in hot pink)

I usually wear my ears every once in a while. Depends on my mood. But I so badly want a fedora. So I may get one before Disney this year... lol

Kirk bought this Fedora at Hollywood Studios. It's the classic Indiana Jones version. I noticed at Disneyland (at Vault 28) they were selling Goorin Bros. Hats. They're a fantastic hat company, I'm not sure if they've made it to WDW yet.

Mrhub almost always wears a baseball cap whether he is at Disney or home. I however, never wear a hat. I will not even wear one in the winter. I do wear earmuffs when walking the dog but never a hat or hood. I did buy a hat once in Disney when we went to MNSSHP because it was raining and I decided I would rather wear a hat than carry an unbrella through the park. That is the one and only time I have had that hat on.

I always were baseball caps, even when I was a kid I always had a cap on. Mostly football, the Bucccs, Texans or a couple of College. I always wear them in the worlds, a couple were even purchased in Mickey's world of sports at DTD.

I usually wear a hat at WDW and whenever I'm going to be out in the sun for any length of time.

I won't wear hats either! I live in Ontario, and winters here are sometimes brutal, but I still won't wear a hat! Earmuffs yes. Hats no.

I'd love to be someone who can plunk a hat on their head and look great. I, however, look stupid, so vanity wins over not frying my brain in the summer and freezing it in the winter.

DH always wears a hat in the summer - usually a baseball cap type that he's bought on our travels. He found a really nice one at Mouse Gears this spring, so that will be his favourite for this summer.

I'm glad someone else looks as goofy as me in hats! I just look ridiculous in most hats! The only time I can get away with them are the beanie style ones that you wear when its cold. And even then, I have a blue one that makes my eyes pop that I always wear. But my bf wont walk out of the house without a hat on!

I always wear hats when outdoors, I literally have well over 70 baseball type caps, 2 good western style hats, and 5 straw hats which I usually wear to car shows and such. I have had most of the baseball caps given to me when we were drag racing, some are of places we have visited and about ten DVC hats (given away at Welcome Home Wednesday)and some other Disney caps that I actually purchased. Funny part is I always wear the same 1 or 2 for a while then switch.

I must admit, vanity is what's fueling my love for hats. My hair is really thinning and the hat's keep my scalp from getting sun burnt. I'm still trying to convince myself that it's really just fashionable and cool. I haven't quite accepted the hair thing yet.

I love baseball caps and have wanted a medium brim Tilley hat for travel. Is not MY vanity that keeps me out of the wider brimmed hats. . . I tend to think function first because my fair complexion needs the extra cover-up, but Kim looks at form first. So no wide brim hats for me! silly

I'm a baseball hat guy, but recently I had some pre-cancerous areas on the tops of my ears and around my temples treated with liquid nitrogen. So now I am searching for a new style of hat with a brim.

Currently I'm trying to decide between the hat styles worn by Tom Mix, Rory Sabatini, Carl Spackler, Juan "Chi Chi" Rodriguez, Jake Blues, and R Lee Ermey. Let me know which one would look best with mouse ears attached.

When I was doing research for the blog post about heat and sun I actually came across a story that claimed wearing a hat with at least a 3" brim can reduce your risk of getting cancer by 10%!! I didn't search any further into how true that is, but I thought it was an interesting tibit.

Hey Bill - Try looking at Tilley's. Great looking hats and various weights and brims.

I often throw on a baseball cap if it's a bad hair day Smile And I wear a Walaroo with sun protection for anyday at Disney, ALWAYS! I also always wear them to the beach. I empathize with "looking silly in a hat." For me, hair length is everything. If my hair isn't at least in a bob, I can't wear a hat. Fortunately, it's pretty long right now, so it's not an issue.

I'm usually the one taking the pics, so I couldn't quickly find a pic from WDW of me in a hat, but here's my pink Walaroo in Sanibel last year:

Okay, so when we're talking 3" brim for sun protection, we're talking 3" all the way around? Not just the brim, yes?

And holy moly these pictures of y'all in hats is making me so happy right now...keep 'em comin'!!

Lizzy_B, where I find a Walaroo? We spend a fair amount of time at the beach during the summer, and I'm thinking this is the ticket!

But, Kristen K., I'm lovin' your seagrass hat, too!

Isn't it funny that you wear hats in the winter to keep the heat from escaping the top of your head, so it keeps you warm, but then in the summer, you wear a hat to keep you cool?? Ah, the mysteries of life...

Thanks, girls! The pink one is a little floppy 'cause it's been washed, but it's still cute. I have periwinkle and off white too, plus one that's more of a brown woven material - cute and cooler, but not such good sun protection.

Definitely 3" around if you can take it.

Here's their website:

http://www.wallaroohats.com/

I usually buy them off the rack; normally, you can find them where Fresh Produce clothing is sold (Mine have come from St. Thomas, Universal Studios, and Sanibel Smile ) But the website has a nifty store finder, so you might be able to find them a little closer to home! Good luck!

Yes 3" all around for the best coverage!

My seagrass hat came from MouseGears in Epcot. It still smells like seagrass too, so every time I wear it I think about vacation!

Yeah - they are pricey but come with a lifetime loss/replacement guarantee. They never wear out - my cousin has a 25 year old one that till looks great. I covet it every time I see her in it!
