Hey! Are you a cop lady?

I started a new program in our city called "Lunch with a Cop".
The entire purpose is to spend lunch time with 5th graders and let them see
what is behind the uniform. I answer questions, talk about their classroom,
bring pictures of my animals, family and vacations (they all Love Disney!)-
so hopefully one day they will remember that even those of us who wear
blue, brown or whatever color your uniform is, are human and not just "the uniform".

We have 2 elementary schools with a total of 5 fifth grade classes. I'm taking
3 of the classes and another officer is taking the remaining 2. This rotates me
so I hit each class once a month.

The first lunch date is mostly spent getting the "usual" questions out of the way..
Are you a cop? Have you ever shot someone? Do you have a police dog?
Where's your taser? Do you know my mom? (dad, sister, brother, friend)
You've been to my house before, remember? you arrested my mom! (dad, sister, brother, friend)

Instead of the "are you a cop" I had one little girl ask me if i was a "cop lady".
I don't get called a Lady very often...so it stuck to my heart biggrin

I thought I'd share some pictures from my department..feel free to share yours too,
Law Enforcement or where ever you work!

1) we are starting to take more "magazine style" photo's..I'm not in these, our shift photo's aren't done yet.
2) more stylized photos
3) our SRT (special response team-similar to SWAT) uniform (tank in the background)
4) our Dispatch center
5) my great nephew posing in the rear of my slick top squad car (Ford although are slowly switching to Dodge)
6) my great nephew by they tank
7) my great nephew in our police Hummer
Cool yep, that's Mrs. Claus in the back. I'll arrest anyone. Lay off the spice eggnog! eek
(ok, really we were doing the tree lighting ceremony & she jumped in to warm up)

Ahhhh that's a really cute and great thing for you to do, we don't really have anything like this here in the uk but I wish we did! I would have loved to have lunch with a policeman/fireman etc. (though you could say I did everyday I was at home given my dad was in the police haha)

Great pics and a great program. One thing I can't help but notice in the first two photos are that your Sam Browne belts (at least that is what we used to call them) are getting to the point that you can't put anything else on them. laugh We used to carry 9mm, 2 clips, cuffs and radio.

Ha ha ha, VL, you should see some of ours, the smaller cops look like they may fall over sometimes they have so much crap on their belts. Look this one is even leaning! She is not working with us anymore though.

That is awesome! Blondie's school has an officer there all the time now. She says she talks to him almost every day!

Thanks everyone!

C-Squirrel- I'm interested in hearing more about Elmer the Safety Elephant! LOL laugh
We do have an adult costume called Safety Pup but she only comes out to walk in parades.

JMED-We have a school Officer also..he has to rotate among 5 schools..we also have mandatory lock downs
at all the schools, all day... most of our schools also have parent volunteers to man the door alarms.
Its sad to me at times.... when I went to school my worse fear was a tornado...now we have active
shooter drills, even at the elementary schools.

VL- it's true about our vests! I've given up carrying a key holder, mace, baton and extra cuffs...
I carry a Glock 45, 1 handcuff holder, 2 mag's, radio and a taser. It at least leaves part of my back open
so I can sit in the car without jamming my spine. Thank goodness we've switched to tactical BDU's for
everyday patrol-I need those pockets for everything else! I weighed my belt with the
equipment, just shy of 25lbs. I love my massage therapist ! Thanks to her my back might make
25yrs in this profession eek

MH-nice looking uniforms...! too bad you lost the female..hopefully she is carrying on in the profession
elsewhere.....

I think what you are doing is wonderful. Elmer the safety Elephant was a fixture in my childhood as well. He had a whole booklet of safety rules like "look both ways before you cross the street" and Don't walk between parked cars". When I was a child he had a giant paper mache head but the last time I saw him he wore a blow up suit of some kind.(kind of like those sumo wrestlers you dress up at parties and bump each other..if that makes any sense lol)

MM, we still have two female officer's, one is a Sergeant and the other a Patrol officer. The female sergeant is our PR officer and also a county SWAT negotiator.

We do daily school walk throughs and they do the "lunch with a Police Officer" every few months. Our department stopped doing all the D.A.R.E and McGruff stuff a number of years ago.

I think what you are doing with the kids is fantastic. It is something that our local force could well do with copying to some extent as they have a poor public image with a lot of the locals.
