Hollywood studios counter service - Need input!

OK-
Details are all beginning to come together, but need some input to help us on our first night. We are staying at CBR and are on the DP. We are saving all our TS credits for signature meals so would like to use QS credits the first night for dinner.

We arrive at MCO at 5:30pm (from west coast) and will be at resort @ 6:30-7:00. yay
After checking in, we will have the option of staying at the resort if we are tired from the flights, OR if we just can't stand it, we could head off the DTD for dinner, OR OR we could go to Hollywood Studios and stay up late. It is an Extra Magic Hours night that night. (March 26). We are guessing that 8:00pm will be our approx. dining time.

We are familiar with the CBR Quick Service options and the DTD QS dining options (we love Puck Express) but are not as familiar with Quick Service options at Studios.

What say you for quick service options at The Studios?
If we wanted, we could risk a TS walk up. Any ideas for that, too?

gaah

When we went we ate at the ABC Commissary. It's by American Idol I think. It was ok. I had a burger and I liked it. I think DH had some kind of fried fish sandwich and he liked that too. I just remember they were a little unorganized in there. I did notice the chocolate mousse looked fantastic. We were gonna go to Pizza Planet, however we were heading home to Chicago that night and we decided we would just get Pizza when we got home.

Nice idea- is there a Best Burger at HS? Or other sandwich or something?

We have ate at ABC Commissary before and it was pretty good. We had cheeseburgers that came with shrimp it was a surf and turf type thing and came with fries.

ABC Commissary has several nice options. They have some options beyond the burger and fries as well.

Starring Rolls has some nice deli sandwich options. They have a small menu but I've heard great things about their blackforest ham or turkey sandwiches.

The only place I'll eat the Disney pizza is at pizza planet. I swear it tastes better there...or maybe I just want it to. wink

ABC Commissary is really good and they have some different options from the normal theme park QS. And every time I've eaten there it's been less crowded than everywhere else and you can sit in the nice AC!

I'm addicted to the Disney chicken nuggets so I always eat at Rosie's (by Tower of Terror & Rockin' Rollercoaster) , but most people probably aren't as crazy about them as me. biggrin

Another vote for Pizza Planet. I've never eaten at ABC Commissary, but the other counter-service places were all right but nothing I'd go out of my way for.

I've only been to Hollywood Studios once in the past several years, but I seem to remember the kids and I got some decent BBQ that we ate waiting in line for Fantasmic. I want to say that it was at Fairfax Fare. It wasn't knock your socks off, but it was good. I think that there was another counter place right next to it that my daughter got her meal from (knowing her it was probably those chicken nuggets.)

Also, I just remembered that if you're looking for some good dessert, that ice cream shop right across from where you line-up for Fantasmic has AMAZING ice cream sundaes. We always get one while we stand in line. The apple pie sundae they have is to die for! muchlove (and its enough for 2 adults, easy!)

These are all great ideas and I am so wanting to be there personally to try them out!

On a side note - I left work today to find about 10 inches of new snow so am soooooo wishing that I could snap my fingers and the next 68 days would magically disappear. Winter is a great season, but Disney is better . . .

Hey! I can't weigh in on QS at DHS (we always have lunch at the Brown Derby there) but I can say GO FOR IT on Toy Story Mania stand by during EMH! I have only ridden the ride one time, and it was stand by during EMH. Sure, we waited for about 30-45 mins (honestly, my friend and I were both playing on our phones and chatting, so the time whizzed by), but there is sooooo much to see in that queue that it was a pleasure! Good luck!

For us the favorite counter service places at the studios is the Back Lot Express and Minn & Bills Dockside. Another suggestion would be to head down Sunset Blvd and hit one of the many counter service places there. Pizza Planet is good too.

For a sit-down meal, we always go to Momma Melrose's and/or the Prime Time Cafe (I really like the lounge).

I must be the only one around here who does not like ABC Commissary. Ugh! I'd rather snack on potato chips! I don't know if they still had it, but they used to have these so-called Asian stir fried noodles. Horrors! I think all they did was pour soy sauce all over some spaghetti and called it a day! And I also made a mistake once of ordering a chicken curry. I must have been brain dead that day.

Counter service at DHS is extremely disappointing, in my opinion. The only place that I've had counter service during my visits there is at Studio Catering, right next to the Street of America. They actually have tried do be quite innovative in their food offering throughout the years. One time, they even had Mediterranean-type offerings, even Middle-eastern/persian with pita and the likes. The food was surprisingly good, but even I could have predicted that they couldn't make it last because not a whole lot of "tourists" would venture into eating something like that. On our December trip, we ate there again, and the food has more of a healthy slant to it, which we didn't mind. The veggie sub was my favorite and I had it twice.

I just wish they bring back the grilled chicken served with black beans and rice that they once had there. Now THAT was good, especially since I still remember it.

Zz.

Again, as I sit here watching the snow pile up outside, I am wishing I was in DHS eating even the most retched of the QS offerings.
Thank you, ZZ, for your insights. We may just go for a hot-dog and call it good. . .

You would think that Disney could figure out a California style beach-shack burger/dog stand with a big outdoor grill . . .
And didn't Rosie's used to be Red Hots? I think I remember them being quite good. . .

Every trip to Hollywood Studios we eat CS at Backlot Express. It's never too busy and the food isn't too bad! Pizza Planet of course is a fun atmosphere! Wink

we went to Pizza Plant, mostly for the cappacino cupcakes that Jess recommended. it was the best cupcake we had on our trip. (also had the butterfinger & chocolate peanutbutter from starring rolls and Oreo mickey from Pop)

The pizza was decent too. and way to much food. we got our salads with dressing on the side, so they were nice & crisp

the sandwiches at starring rolls were not great. i HATE mustard, and they came with it on already. They also had way to much meat. The Carrot cake cookie was divine, and i make a mean carrot cake, the cookie actully tasted homemade.

Another thought I had was Min & Bill's dockside diner had some really interesting stuff that I wanted to try last time I was there. Would love to hear your report. They were basically sandwiches with the stuff rolled inside. The Disney Food Blog has a review here:

http://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2011/07/13/review-min-and-bills-dockside-diner/

Which made them sound so-so. I'd like to hear another take.

Heya Erin! Welcome to the boards!

I've never tried that sandwich. Do you recommend it for someone who likes plain sandwiches, or is it the extras that makes it good?

I know they now have some pretty high end fancy hotdogs...back in October I remember seeing gourmet hotdogs with truffles and all sorts of crazy fixings. I didn't have the nerve to try any but maybe they might just be something different to try.

Oh wow - those are all great ideas! We will be there too late for Starring Rolls, but the hot dogs and the Italian sandwich both sound great! I will also check out Min & Bill's menu.

Such great ideas!!
