How did you meet?

Hi Everyone.

I've only been a member for about a week and what struck me the most about this forum is how many long-term, happy relationships people have.

For about 5 weeks, I've skipped around other sites before finding this one, and didn't notice this anywhere...they were perfectly nice people, but no one seemed to mention their significant other unless they were poking fun.

I'm wondering:

1) How did you meet?

2) What is your secret or secrets? (We can never name just one thing when people ask)

3) What is your favorite thing or things about the other? (maybe add how those things compliment your traits??)

4) How do you avoid arguments or at least keep them from getting ugly?

5) What was the most romantic thing either A) you did together, or B) He/she did for you?

If this basic question has already been asked, let me know!

Thanks!

Jane Smile

I'm assuming you mean how did you meet your spouse?

DH and I met in a chat room of all places. We lived 5 minutes apart and once we met we were stuck like glue. Tomorrow is our 9 year wedding anniversary! muchlove

Our secret is to not keep any secrets, discuss everything, don't hold back your feelings, but don't use hurtful words. I think we've had 3 true arguements in all this time. We may disagree, but we always respect the other's opinion.

We are so opposite in many ways. He's totally outgoing, where as I can take a long time to warm up to people. He's a huge gamer geek and I've always been more into arts and crafts, but we both have taken interest in each others hobbies and now I play games and he'll help me scrapbook. We opened a game and hobby store together and now I sell Thirty-One and we both work hard for both businesses. We both LOVE disney, broadway, movies, etc so that's our common ground, but we also take time from each other even if it's watching tv in different rooms.

Avoiding arguments comes from constant communication.

Most romantic? Hmmm, nothing has been over the top on either side, rather we both do random small gestures. i.e. today's my birthday, but it's family board game night at the store so he has to be there. He invited our customers/friends to a boardgame birthday bash and ordered me a cake. Overly romantic? Probably not, super sweet, yup. To us, romance is more about every day gestures than over the top one time things.

Thanks Katrina...that was beautifully written.

Joe, I just looked back on your post about Jan. As everyone said, she was very beautiful. Most people don't get as lucky as the two of you. I'm so sorry for your loss. I would have loved to hear your answers...I know I'd love to learn from you.

My husband and I have a good marriage, but one I would like to improve and know that I can. This is why I put this topic out there. I'd like to have a great marriage. Again, it was the very first thing that struck me about this site.

I'll play! We'll be married 13 Years in a couple of weeks.

1) I fist learned of my husband because we participated in the same email list for a historical reenactment group. Several months later we met by chance in person at an event.

2) Our secret? I'm in charge and usually he says "Yes dear". Things seem to run well that way. Mostly we just "get" each other.

3) My favorite thing about my husband is that he's indulgent of me. That and that he successfully converted to being a Disney fan, so while he may still complain and grump, I know that deep down he's have a fantastic time too.

4) It take two people to argue, one or both of us usually just walks away. Also, I've learned over the year how to present things to him in a way that he'll understand and agree with. Choosing the right words when you argue a position is very important, research and plan if you know that there's going to be a fight.

5) A) Our 10 Year Anniversary Disneymoon, or B) He buys me the most beautiful necklaces, my favorite has the prayer "Woman of Valor" inscribed on it in Hebrew, I adore it.

Verry nice, Kristen. Indulgent is always nice wink

What was that part...ummm, just walk away? Hmmm, does not compute...does not compute.

He sounds like a great guy.

ooo I like doing stuff like this! =) DH and I have only been married for 2 years, so not sure how helpful my answers will be....

1) Brandon and I met on a blind date...a girl I worked with and her husband set us up! Definately wasn't love at first sight and he gave me the most awkward, fastest kiss good night in history! But after our second date we were inseperable!

2) hmm.. secrets... we are just very open with each other, tell each other everything, any time we disagree or do something to upset the other one we solve it and move on no reason to hold a grudge, and lots of cuddling, holding hands, and kissing! That can never stop! haha.

3) Its funny because our personalities are EXACT opposite. He is very outspoken, loud, a leader type personality...I'm very laid back, go with the flow, type person...we very rarely get upset about the same things so we can talk sense into each other and we both push the other to do stuff out of their comfort zone.

4) We have worked A LOT the last 6 months on not pushing each others buttons. We also have a code word if things start to get a little heated that we use and we know that its time to stop talking about the subject and revisit it at another time. I'm a very passive person though so we dont argue all the much.. or at least when he gets upset I just hear him out and thats usually the end of it...

5) We both enjoy doing small things than just one big romantic guesture here and there. Date nights are a must! Also making a big deal of birthdays and anniversaries... we also like to take weekend trips. We are just an hour and a half from Nashville, Chattanooga and other fun places for over night trips!

Well my hubby and I have been married for 4 years in January! Time flies! It's been a crazy 4 years with lots of crazy stuff happening but I wouldn't trade it for the world!

1) We met at work. We both worked at a hospital as aides and I flirted shamelessly with him as I thought he was only like 21 or 22. I was 19 at the time. Come to find out he was 26, divorced with the cutest little red headed little 3 year old boy! After getting to know each other for a few months he finally asked me out and 3 months later we were engaged and 3 months after that married!

2) Secrets? Well in 4 years I've learned to never go to bed mad at each other and sometimes we all need a little space from each other. Also, things go smoother when I'm in charge Smile My favorite piece of advice from one of my bridal showers was to fight naked...works like a charm...

3) My favorite thing about my husband is how sweet and awesome he is! He always makes sure that I'm happy no matter what. We've been facing fertility issues since 5 months into our marriage and he is so supportive! Least favorite thing: Technology and video games, let's just say I love then the internet crashes or the power is out Smile

4) When we can't avoid an argument by communication we keep the fights fair. We don't usually yell as it's not part of our personalities but we aren't mean to each other. And when things seem to be escalating we usually take a break and cool down.

5) Together: Honeymoon in Disney World this past May...so fabulous!
He gets me the silliest gifts...I love to wander the toy aisle and look at stuff I always wanted growing up...I always wanted an Easy Bake Oven and 2 Christmas' ago we didn't have a lot of money but he made sure he got me one. It was the best gift ever!

Yes, there is a definite trend in the comments, that's for sure.

Thanks Emmaanne and macdamron...that was fun and informative!

PS I never had an EasyBake oven either sad

OOoo, fun!

1) Joe and I met at a coffee house in Minneapolis one Sunday morning. We spotted each other across the room and kept making eye contact. I went back the very next Sunday at the same time hoping to see him again, and sure enough, there he was! We exchanged numbers and went on our first date 3 days later and have been together now for just about 13 years Smile

2) I'm with mac on the secrets - never go to bed mad, and don't focus more on being right at the cost of harming your relationship. It's really simple with us - we just love each other more than anything, and life and our time together is too short to waste it on anything else.

3) Joe's incredibly thoughtful and sweet, and I love his eyes. And he spoils me to death. And puts up with my Disney obsession fascination.

4) Honestly, we've never argued in 13 years. See # 2 above. I think we're both pretty low key as well, and that helps. Don't sweat the small stuff, and talk about the big stuff. And we honestly enjoy spending time with each other. In 13 years, we've only spent 1 night apart.

5) The most romantic thing still is from our first anniversary - he booked a really nice room at a nearby swanky hotel and didn't tell me. When I got home from work, he blindfolded me, made me lay down in the back seat of the car, then walked me to the room (still blindfolded), opened the door, and had me take of the blindfold. And there in front of me was a room filled with lit candles, rose petals all over the place, a bottle of champagne, and a dozen red roses. muchlove

We also used to pack each other's lunch and slip in little notes every day. He still packs mine and I still get notes clapping

Well here goes our story
1. Mark and I met at a restaurant. I was a waitress. He was a customer. He came in several times over the next week and he finally asked me to go to a party with him. We were both 17. We were married a little over a year later. That was over 32 years ago.

2. I do not feel like we have a real secret. We just love each other. And he really is my best friend, I adore and cherish him.

3. My favorite thing about him is he is so sweet and caring.

4. We do not fight and really never have. Of course we do not not agree on everything but we are both pretty laid back and neither of us sweat the small stuff. And trust me the older you get the more you realize most of all of it is small stuff.

5. Romance can mean something different to every person. Sure he has done many romantic things through the years but the ones that come to mind are the simple everyday ones. Last winter when we were walking Mister one snowy night he grabbed me and pulled close just to kiss me in the snow. He also quite often feels for my hand when he comes to bed just to hold it.

We met in school..we were actually good friends for two years and our professor asked us to house sit while he went away for the summer. We spent pretty much every second together then we went back to school and lived in separate apartments and realized we wanted to be together.

As far as our secret I don't think we really have one other than we just generally like being around each other. I remember one time he went out with a bunch of people from his work and I went with them and all the people where shocked that he wanted me to come because they all wanted to get away from their spouses.

We met online on a dating site. I was a little scared as there was a picture of him being a rock star and I thought oh here we go some guy with tons of girls around him. We wrote each other for about three weeks and then I creeped him at one of his gigs. I wanted to see if he was a ladies man.....we ended up dating and to my surprise he shook my hand at the end of the night on the first three dates!! We feel in love. I think one of our biggest things is we both believe in something..same values, morals and religious views. We stay strong because we go to church and share a storng belief in God. Our big secret....seperate rooms....I never thought I would ever think this way but wow it helps. We both get lots of sleep at night and have our own space. He has a different schedule than me and if I don't get my sleep ...look out! As for romantic...I think it is the small everyday things we do for each other...like back rubs, little love notes, holding my hand...stuff like that. My favourite thing is his gift of music. He can really really really play guitar. He wrote me a beautiful song for our anniversary (ok that is probably the most romantic thing he's done).

Being serenaded! Yeah, I would think that would count as romantic! Very nice.

Well... I don't know what to say to be honest. Don't know if Jess has nothing to say or hasn't seen this post? I know she has been on and has gone through posts. So maybe I can get away with some things! laugh

Well... the way we met was me not paying attention. I just got back from college, and headed up to a place called Easton. Its like a really nice outside mall. Kinda like Downtown Disney actually. Well... I wanted to go there to get new clothes for job interviews and such. Well... I was fulling around with my bags, seeing what I had while walking, and literally ran into her. We all dropped our stuff. I apologized, and we just started talking. I think it was 3-4 months later I proposed to her, and then a year after that we got married, and have been for the past 7 years. Jess and I are hoping for our 10th we can get to Disney, child free, for a week or so. Hoping!

Now see... if she would had told the story... it probably had been 100 times better.... lol

Well... here is the thing. My degree is in Radio Communications, as in being a radio personality and stuff like that. Where we live is in a top 20 market that wants at least 2 years experience. Sooooooooooo.... most of my interviews were for out of state at the time. Tried to get a job in that area here, but decided I wanted to be with Jess more than my career. She was starting nursing school, and couldn't leave. So I chose to stay and be with Jess.

That really is cute. Hey, Bella! Where did you hear "meet-cute"? Does everyone know that expression? I heard it in a movie called The Holiday. It is a meet-cute!

Most people meet through friends, parties, at work, school. Not bumping in to each other! I would be so flattered if someone wanted to get to know me after bumping into me. Usually, it's just a nervous laugh and off the two parties go. So, just one step to the left or right for either of you and...

don't want to think of that.
