I want to start scrapbooking. But how?

We've got about a bazillion pics that need to be organized, and it seems so overwhelming. I know that we've got a few scrapbookers here. How do you get started? Do you have a dedicated space in your home? Do you use Creative Memories stuff or can you find good supplies in craft stores. Help! I don't know where to start Smile

Yay Lizzy B! It can be alot of fun getting everything together yay

I think there re a few approaches you can take when you have a ton of pics. And I use each fo them depending on what I am putting together.

I typically do all our vacation stuff in a scrapbook, and it's all done by trip/vacation. Each Disney vaca gets it's own book, our trip to Asheville got it's own book. Even each of the dogs has their own scrapbook.

I also had a ton of general, non-vacation pics hanging around, and then inherited a bunch more when my Mom passed - eerything from family vacations going back to the 60's, to a numer of pics from her growing up in the 30's-50's, to just..pictures. Some in shoe boxes, some in tattered albums, and most just loose and in no particular order.

So I did a few things: some of the ones I really liked from childhood, I put into a collage type frames that I can hang up.

For everything else, I really just wanted them in a photo album so that they were organized. I ended up sorting everything by date/decade. Then I bought 4 photo albums, and now I have 2 that are all family history pics dating back to the early 1900's up uintil 1999, and one is everything from 1999 on (1999 was the year Joe and I met, so I have the pre-Joe albums and then the post-Joe album, since that was a life changing milestone!!! Hee hee)

For our scrapbooks, I really do keep it simple. For the Disney ones, I have probably posted pics before, but I use EVERYTHING from out trips - pictures, park guides, FastPasses, parking passes, room keys, popcorn boxes...you name it, it finds it's way into a scrapbook. I do buy the Disney scrapbook pages and Disney sstickers, usually from Michaels (often you can find a sale). I don't do anything fancy or have any scrapbooking tools.

I do pretty much the same thing for non-Disney trips as well. The Asheville one has pictures I took, plus cut-outs from brochures and maps we used to plan, menus from places we ate, etc....anything that is a momento from the trip. I did also buy some stickers from Hobby Lobby that were camping-themed to jazz it up. For that and the dog albums, I just found a smaller 8 x 8 scrapbook album, cut down some cheap construction paper to size, and put everything on that.

Have fun with it!

Oh what fun you are about to have!
I agree with Jeff, keep it simple especially to start. I would suggest you start with doing one with a theme. Maybe something like one for your daughters birthdays. You could start with her 1st birthday and work up to the present. That would also be an ongoing one.
AS far as supplies go, you can get everything you would need at a craft store such as Michaels or AC Moore. I do occasionaly order on-line from scrapbooking 101 but I usually use them when I am dealing with a subject that is much harder to find than birthdays. Wait till you see all of the goodies that are out there. I do have a lot but honestly I use the basics much more than the fancy stuff. I do have a room that I have set up for scrapbooking. I did it for years without such a room though. The biggest advantage to having a room or space set aside for it is not having to clean up your mess while working on it.
To get started you would need the book, paper, stickers, and which ever type of glue or adhesive you intend to use. I would also suggest you invest in a cutter. I am not talking about the fancy ones just one like this. I would also suggest you buy several replacement blades for it from the start. I go through one or two blades per scrapbook depending on how much paper I cut and whether or not I am cropping the pictures.

I can't wait to check all of these out, guys! Let me know if you think of anything else! I'd really love to get started soon.

Do you dedicate a corner somewhere to your scrapbooking? Or does everything get packed away when you aren't working on it? Any storage/organization suggestions?

I am a bad scrapbooker. I always start them but never finish them. Recently I have gotten hooked on digital photo books. I make a huge one every year & for milestones. The only bad part is that you cannot put stuff in there---like park maps or mementos etc.

Could scan them in with a scanner?

I take up about a 1/3 of our living room at the moment. I was able to talk my husband into giving up his computer area (had to compromise by letting him use the tv as his monitor) but I have two long tables and some storage space. I scrapbook, make cards, and such.

I have a corner in Mase's "man cave" that is dedicated to my scrapbooking. I do my albums by year with some years having more then one album and Disney trips get their own album to. If Im doing Disney I will get my stuff at like Joanns or Michaels but for everything else I get it online or at Archivers or the local scrapbook store cause I feel that the other stores are to generic for my taste... Yes I can be a bit of a scrapbook snob... Lol
