If you could tell people the 'One Thing' they had to do in Disney.....

You have friends going for the first time ever but you can only tell them 1 thing they MUST do, what would it be?

I find this hard cause I'd wanna tell them loads of thing lol. I think for me it would be, you HAVE to watch wishes.

Ugh..there is so much to tell them. I would say arrive at park opening at MK and walk down Main Street early in the morning with barely anyone there..completely magical!

How the %^*#$ could I pick one?!? Egads...

But I think I would go your route, RP, and say catch the lighting of the castle and Wishes (I know, that's technically 2 - but they go together so well!!)

Rather than picking a particular ride or attraction, I would say research and plan, then when you think you've got it, research a bit more and a plan again.

My "must do" remains a park. IMO, you must do MK on your first trip. I guess I feel that way because I remember when MK was all there was.

I would tell them that the one thing they must do, is NOT try to do everything on the first trip. You just can not do that much and you would be stretching yourself out too thin. Just enjoy the things that you do get to do.

Stand under the railroad station at MK early in the morning when Main St is still fairly empty and stare at the castle. It makes me tear up without fail every time (and I don't cry easily). Also, eat at Boma and tour the AKL. I know that's 2 things but you can't do just one thing at WDW anyway.

Hi all! At this exact moment I would say "Leave your kids at home!" To explain this, we are sitting on our balcony at the Poly at this moment, and on both sides of us are families with kids, and both are having complete and utter meltdowns! screaming and crying in stereo. Oh my god!

Wow! You can hear my DS all the way in Disney? (Can you tell what kind of day we are having here at Casa Bella?)

Oh boy this is hard to explain. I would try to stress how important it is to leave your stress at home. I always try to remember only I can determine just how much fun I have. I can not control how other people or their cihldren are acting. I can however decide how I react to it. The same holds true to crowds and weather. Again, I can choose to accept any given condition and adapt or I could complain about it (not that would do a thing to improve it lol). I have found the more flexible we are with our plans the better trip we have. Really we usually do not plan much other than our ADRs.

Vettelover and Scrappy have great advice. Too many times you see people looking miserable at Disney because they are trying to do everything...just relax and enjoy your time. And don't forget to get some down time in by the pool if the weather is nice (especially at at Disney resort!) mickey

Don't count calories! Vacation is vacation and unless there are medical reasons, enjoy the food Disney has to offer and worry about your pants on the return home! Order and app, get a drink, and most importantly EAT DESSERT! If they do Disney like I do Disney they will probably walk it all off anyway!

Obvious that I like eating in WDW? lol

Excellent advice. Calories don't exist on vacation. Smile

How else can you eat all the Zebra Domes and Mickey ice cream bars you want?

I agree with this so much! I see so many people stressed and agitated IN the parks. It is sad that so many people see Disney as something they "have to do" because they have kids and they aren't enjoying themselves. Dave and I really try to have a "go with the flow" sort of attitude towards Disney. Are the crowds bad at MK? That's cool we'll ride the rides without big lines (TTA, COP, The Tiki Room) and then head somewhere else? Is it raining? Perfect time to shop or hit up the inside shows. Is it hot? Take a break in the afternoon and come back in the evening.
My sister took her three kids about 5 years ago and they had a miserable time because they let their circumstances get the best of them. They stayed off-site and wouldn't get to the parks until 12 or so..then they left the parks for dinner because she thought it was too expensive and then went BACK to the parks. I mean..don't you think the extra 5 or so dollars is worth the stress? Then the kids were exhausted or grouchy because they didn't want to leave and all she did was complain about the lines or how the Fastpasses were gone (because she didn't get there until late in the day most of the good ones were gone). Did I mention it was Easter week?
She says she'll never go back. She had to go once because she has kids but now that's all.

I still dont understand how parents could have such a horrible time at Disney with the kids. I love going with my family so much! Just love it! The past 2 years with them has been great. Now it gets trying at times, but we get refocused and enjoy ourselves again. Like Bella says... you go with the flow. Dont make yourself and the family to do everything. You do what you can and you move on. No worries. Were always at the parks for 5 days usually, and just last year I almost demanded that we take our time. When we get up is when we get up. Where we go is where we go. We watched Lines (And app for the iPhone and iPad) and went to the least congested park.

I guess the key is for parents with kids.... try to go during the least congested times. I love when we go. No lines at all. Now dont get me wrong. I long for the day when my wife and I can go without the kids. I think it would be great. But right now... I am having to much fun taking my kids! Just love it! My son and I are going to do the Pirate League together! Hoping next year Brooklin can do that Princess thing. She already LOVES getting all dolled up and getting her hair cut. Let alone... we cant wait for her to see her favorite characters. I just live for Disney for my kids. We all just enjoy it way to much as a family!

I agree with everything above. Just relax and try not to do everything. Also avoid the parks that have Extra Magic Hours for that day if you can. They tend to be the busiest.

That's the thing, my friend wanted to do too much in too little time and my feet paid dearly for it. I've still got healing blisters sad Maybe if she had prepared and actually researched what was there TO DO, maybe this wouldn't have happened.

Thats it right there. Lets see if I can explain this...

Taking your kids to Disney is like Christmas Day. But rather than just one morning of presents. Its like a weeks worth of presents! The smiles NEVER go away! They joy NEVER goes away! Its like them opening their favorite present over and over and over again. Its just so much fun! Ive been as a kid and enjoyed it, but so far my favorite visits to Disney have been with my wife and kids.
