JMUDUKZ Tinkerbell Half Marathon Trip Report!

First half of the Pink Coast to Coast challenge has been completed!! Although I've spent a few hours (literally, hours) in Disneyland squished into work trips and destination wedding trips, this was my first ACTUAL Disneyland Trip. I stayed at the Disneyland Hotel, which was AWESOME. It's not as themed as most of the WDW resorts, but it was certainly a luxury hotel with just enough Disney touch to make sure you remember where you are. I arrived on Thursday and took the Disneyland Resort Express from the airport. Couldn't have been easier! I checked in at the perfect time, as the characters from Goofy's Kitchen were wandering the lobby, so I got quite a few spontaneous character meet and greets!! After dumping my luggage, I headed to the Expo. I was about an hour early, but the lines were LOOOOONNNNGGGG already. I hopped into the line for the official race merch, having read that official race stuff sells out immediately on the west coast. In typical Disney fashion, they queued us up and had us marching back and forth for that hour, but once I got in, the merch booth was really well organized and I got everything I wanted, including a finisher's shirt (is it bad luck to buy a finisher's shirt before the race?? Might have been in this case!). Got my packet and wandered around the Expo waiting for my time slot to visit the New Balance booth to pick up the official race shoes (I actually had mine already - my friends found my size in the Cinderella shoes the week before at the Marathon Weekend, but there sizes were sold out, so I was on the hunt for Minnie shoes for them). Unfortunately, by the time my number was called, they were sold out, so off to the parks!!

Fireworks in the headboard....

I hit up DL first. My impression is that its....cute. You definitely get that Disney feeling, but when you stand looking at Sleeping Beauty's castle, it's so SMALL compared to Cinderella's. But it's still Disney and I loved it. First order of business was FOOD. I hadn't eaten since breakfast on the other side of the country!! I found Rancho de Zocalo and the CM greeting guests was from Williamsburg, VA, so we had a long chat about Virginia. I was so hungry, there are no pictures of the food, but DANG, that is some good CS food!! The crowds were pretty light, so I ran around doing my "must dos" (POTC) and all of the stuff that is not at WDW (Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, Matterhorn, Alice in Wonderland, and a few others that are escaping me right now). HM and BTMRR were both closed. Hunted for some Dole Whip, but the CM I asked informed me that it closed early that night and I should try back. Did some shopping on Main Street then headed back through Downtown Disney District (DTDD) to my hotel. The plan was to hit up Trader Sam's Tiki Bar, but it was PACKED (not hard b/c it's really SMALL), so I had a beer at the Steakhouse 55 lounge. Since I was denied a Dole Whip I got a Mickey Ice Cream sandwich from the gift shop on my way back to the room. My this time, I was pooped, my body still on east coast time, and I was out like a light.

Hotel waterslides!

I woke up early Friday, not really by choice, but it worked out well, as it was EMH at DCA!! Woohoo!!! Up and dressed and standing in line at the park a little after 7. Met a wonderful woman who I ended up riding a few rides with (and we've since become facebook friends!!) and we passed the time chatting about runDisney. Finally let us into the park and we were OFF behind Lightning McQueen and 'Mater to Carsland. I'm telling you, so worth the extra expense of staying at DLH over the Hampton Inn!! Rode it 3x in about 40 minutes. After my 3rd ride, I wandered around Carsland taking pictures, rode 'Mater's Junkyard Jamboree, and got some of the mini churros for breakfast from the Cozy Cone Motel. They were super YUM and I wish I had some right NOW! As I was sitting at a table enjoying my fried sugar and chocolate, the park opened to the public and in came the masses, led again by Lightning McQueen and 'Mater. Lightning turned into the Cozy Cone and parked there. There were 2 photo pass photographers standing there and no line, so I jumped in and got my pic taken!!

After breakfast, I headed around to get my World of Color FP (which I sadly didn't end up using) and hit the Grizzly River Run. I think you definitely get much more wet on this ride compared to Kali River Rapids. Continued wondering around the park, towards the Voyage of the Little Mermaid, which is the same ride that is now in Fantasyland at MK. I still love it though. Bought a Dinglehopper at the gift shop, which tickled me to no end! Headed down Paradise Pier and hit up California Screamin', King Triton's Carousel, Goofy's flight school, Jumpin' Jelly Fishand Mickey's Wheel of Fun, using the single rider line as much as possible. By this time, I saw the Corn Dog Castle and decided it was a must to get the Corn-Cheese-Dog (I don't eat hot dogs, so the cheese stick in the middle was perfect). I was hoping to pair it up with a local craft beer, but Bayside Brews wasn't open yet. After my snack, I wandered a bit more, getting a FP for ToT and doing the Boudin bakery tour (which is a really RANDOM attraction, btw). I wanted a Mickey face sourdough loaf, but the line for the cafe was LONG and in typical ride queue fashion so I moved on. As I was wandering over to find the Monster's Inc ride (which is really well done!), I saw a sign for a private character greeting for Disney Visa holders, so I hopped in line. I had no idea who we were meeting, but it was Stitch!! Woohoo, I love him!! It was finally time for my FP, so I rode the ToT. VERY VERY VERY different than the one at DHS and I was totally surprised. Headed over for Soarin', which is the exact same ride as is in Epcot, again using the single rider line, which cut the wait time down by a LOT. By this time, I was starting to get that feeling that I've been on too many upside down/spinny rides for one day and headed back to the hotel, where I hung out by the pool for a bit. Dinner was at Tortilla Joe's that night, and I'd highly recommend it. After dinner, I headed back to Disneyland. You could certainly tell that it was the start of a long race weekend, as the lines were getting very long. Rode HM, hunted again in vain for Dole Whip, wandered around a bit, then headed back to the hotel.

Cheese on a stick!! Notice the apples, that makes this a healthy meal....

Great read! Lots of "OMG I can't wait to see that" moments here awesome We were originally planning to do Disneyland this year but then the super amazing DVC annual pass deal happened and well, DL has been relegated to next year (hopefully--unless DH "drags" me on a Disney Cruise laugh ).

I was up early again on Saturday morning, this time to wait in line (again) to try to get the Disney shoes. SUCCESS!! Three happy girls with their running shoes!!

The blue Cinderella ones are mine, the pink Minnie ones belong to my friends.

Grabbed a quick breakfast from Tangeroa Terrace and back to the parks. This time I took the monorail from DTDD into Tomorrowland. It's really interesting, they load the monorail completely differently in DL. Everyone HAS to have a seat, so someone counts the number of heads in each car and then they will call out for a party of X to fill a car. Just like an actual ride!! DL was PACKED. The lines for the rides weren't so long, but trying to walk around, there were people EVERYWHERE. I rode a few rides, including Storybook Canals, walked through the Castle, and just wandered around the park. BTMRR was still down, and someone finally clued me in that the Dole Whip counter was CLOSED for renovation until mid March. Bummed, I wandered down Main Street, and over to DCA for some soup from the Pacific Wharf, but again, the LINES were so long for counter service (this was a theme for the weekend, I've never seen lines so long for counter service meals). As I walked out, the lines for bag check were unREAL. Easily a half hour long. I spend the afternoon resting the legs by the pool. I had an early ADR at Naples. They were offering a special prix fixe meal for runners, so there were people lined up trying to get a walk up. Dinner was pretty good, the bar has been set for via Napoli next month!! Only downside was that I felt like I was kind of stuck in a corner, at my table for one. However, I had a good view of the foot traffic in DTDD, so the people watching was at a max. After dinner, I walked through the Grand Californian and into DCA, thinking I'd get a cupcake for dessert. WRONG. The bakery line was SO LONG again. Dessertless, I headed back to the hotel to get my stuff together and get a good night's rest for the race.

Sunday was race day. Up at 3:15 to get ready. I've posted some pictures below, but overall, the race was sort of a bust for me. I fell not once, but TWICE (and in the same MILE), which left me sore, made (I said some unDisney-like words!), and fearful of being swept (not really a concern, even after waiting in line for pictures, I still finished WAY ahead of the buses, but there was a moment of panic, I won't lie). Running through DCA was AWESOME. Through DL was very back and forth, we bobbed and weaved around the rides. Running through Anaheim was a surprise - I expected it to be excrutiating and boring, but it was actually kinda fun. There were bands and cheerleaders everywhere (kudos to them, if my HS marching band director told me I had to be at a race at 5am on a holiday weekend, I'd probably have quit!). A lot of the local running groups had set up cheering stations and were handing out energy boosting food. Even a candidate for public office was set up handing out ice, which I thought was a great publicity stunt. Finally found mile 13, turned on my Katy Perry finish line song, and crossed the line singing ROAR. West Coast: Check!!

HA - I took this before the race even started!!

Sorry its blurry, I was running as I took it!!

This was awesome, people were handing cameras to other runners and suddenly a CM came running over yelling "everyone in the tea cup!! I'll take the pictures!!"

Set up shop by the pool after the race. Took a little nap, did some reading, some swimming, then hit Trader Sam's for lunch - both liquid and real food!! Finally caught up with Taratru and her running buddies and swapped race highlights. Hung out a bit more at the pool, then started feeling a bit off. Thought it might be dehydration (because apparently a Krakatoa Punch isn't exactly the best recovery beverage after a long run - or so they tell me!!) so I took it easy. Wandered over and got EOS for dinner. It was gross - sorry, I cannot figure out what the rave is about. It reminds me of Firehouse Subs, which I also don't like. I think it's something about the steamed bread. I don't know. I will try it again one day when I'm feeling better, just so I don't give EOS a bum wrap. I had planned to head back to the park, but i was really feeling poorly, so I just went to bed. (Turns out this was not related to the race or the Krakatoa Punch, but was the beginning of the flu, which took me down for the following week. To those who sat next to me on the airplane home, I'm REALLY sorry).

Monday was a bit better. I had an ADR for breakfast at the PCH Grill at Paradise Pier. Food was meh and since I still wasn't feeling my best, I ate the white rice that was on the buffet ($40 for white rice!!). Typical breakfast buffet food. BUT the characters were AWESOME!!! I would so recommend it, just for the character interaction. Stitch actually sat down with me and was trying to "read" my Nook!! Hilarious!! Grabbed a few last minute souveniors and headed back to DLH to wait for the resort express to take me back to LAX. I think because I wasn't feeling tip top, I was actually sort of happy to be heading home, which is a VERY unusual experience for me.

So a few observations: DL is amazing, but it's not WDW. It gets REALLY crowded in the public spaces. Line for food at counter service places were really LONG, to the point that I felt bad for parents who had kids who needed to be feed right THEN (seriously you'd have plan ahead by about a half hour at some points). Also, food prices seemed much higher, possibly in part b/c tax is so high. CM were nice, but not as "magical" as at WDW. The general public seemed to be much less stressed and friendlier at WDW (not as many families fighting or parents yelling!). While I will stick with WDW as my preferred vacation destination, I would not hesitate to go back to DL if an opportunity presented itself (oh, and look at that, it has!! Dumbo Double Dare, here I come!!).

Thanks for reading!! 25 days until the East Coast portion of this little Castle to Castle journey!!

Let's say that the option has been discussed wink . I'm really hoping that the Pixar coastal CA cruise comes back. I didn't see it until it was too late, but it looked wicked cool.

I was seriously tempted by DL this year. My real estate company has a national business conference in LA, so of course my ears perked up at the opportunity to squeeze in a Disneyland trip, but the conference is only two weeks before my already planned birthday WDW trip and it's right in the middle of competition season for the little gymnasts that I coach so it's just a timing nightmare! Plus there's the whole guilt about buying tickets for a different Disney park when I already have an AP at WDW.

Sorry you spent the end of your trip in pre-flu stage. What a bummer sad . Glad it held off until the run was over!!

I'm sorry you got sick after getting out of there. I'm currently fighting some TERRIBLE cough that isn't bronchitis or anything (went to the doctor) but will NOT go away.

Race question - when will the waivers be available? I'm looking on the runDisney site. On section says "approximately one month before" and another says "one month". It's less than a month now. Are they emailed or will they be online? I want to make sure I don't forget or miss it.

JoAnn, they generally send you an email letting you know when they're ready. I think I got my Tink ones about this time out from that race, so any day now.

ARE YOU SO EXCITED?!?!? I am!

Thanks Allie!! My office mates have not stopped laughing at me for falling, so I better stay on my feet for Princess!!

JoAnne - waivers should be out any day, along with final instructions and the course maps. I do have a link to a "back door" if you want to see your bib number. It doesn't do a whole lot of good right now b/c runDisney hasn't posted the corral assignments, so you know your number but not where you start. - Hit me up on facebook if you want it!

And my exciting news: I lucked into a Glass Slipper bib!! And it's LEGAL, so it was transferred into my name, my waiver shows up, and everything!! Just waiting for runDisney to confirm/alleviate my anxiety that it will not mess up my Coast to Coast. I do realize that one should not be this excited about having to add 6.2 miles of running to their vacation, but I'm coming home with 4 medals, 3 shirts, and a ton of memories!! Just hoping I can make it, it is the first back to back race I've done at these distances. I promised the running Gods after I fell at Tink that if they got me through that, I would run my butt off to prep for Princess, so that is what I'm doing. In the meantime, I'm trying not to let the what ifs crawl into my brain!! Okay, sorry, panicked rant over now....
