Lanyards?

It's been 14 years since we went to WDW, and I've seen several mentions about lanyards for your tickets, etc. This is new to me (along with the finger scans!). Does everyone use these? How big are the passes now - credit card sized, bigger, etc.? I know DH is going to carp about buying a lanyard, since he has a bunch sitting upstairs from conventions, etc. I just don't know if they would be suitable anyway, so I don't want to pack them if we don't need them. I'm OK with buying one, but it would be easier if I could tell him his won't work. wink

Any suggestions?

Do not feel like you have to use them. We do not use them. I myself do not care for them. If I had to guess I would say you will see just as many people not using them as you see people using them. The tickets are credit card sized now. Yes, Disney does sell them. I am not really sure that Disneys would be all that much different from the ones he already has.

Tickets are about credit card size, I just keep mine in my wallet. There's really no need to buy a lanyard for it if you don't want to.

Lanyards with plastic packs at the end are a quick access place to keep your tickets and fast passes. The lanyards are really all about a place to keep your pins, carrying your tickets that way is still fairly new. Personally I don't like messing with the ziploc type closure, and I can rarely find a lanyard that's comfortable to me.

Yes they are just like a credit card, they are your key to the world, if you are staying in a disney resort. Everything is on them, charging back to you room with credit card on file, DDP, your room key and park pass.

Oh great. Thanks guys. I think we will not bother then - I hate things hanging around my neck, but would be willing to suffer if it was a Disney must. laugh DH will be happy to not have to wear one - it would remind him of work probably, and the whole point of this trip is to forget reality for a bit. Three and a half days to go. yay yay yay

I keep the "keys to the world" in my money clip in a front pocket. I also record the card numbers on a piece of paper in my backpack.

Normally you need the "keys" to get into the parks and once in the parks you need it to get fastpasses and if you have it set up, you can charge purchases on it. So it's not like you will have to keep whipping it out and showing it. In theory you could be asked to show it getting on buses, boats and the monorail, but I have never been asked.

At the turnstyles, you have to feed your card into a slot, then put your right index finger in a little scanner thingie (that's actually the technical term), and when the light turns green, push through to the fun stuff. I always get a little nervous when the card is not in my physical possession, so I keep an eye on it when going through the turnstyles.

Lastly, some lanyards have "breakaways" for safety. This may be something to consider if you're going on rides.

Oh, yeah, before you get to the turnstyles, you will have pass through a security check. They just look through your backpacks or whatever you're carrying.

Yeah... the lanyards are really for pins now... and the plastic is for your fast passes. I know I'm trying something new come November. I have a hip lanyard I guess you call it... it retracts and such, and gonna have the majority in my backpack.

Hey Mase, is that like the hip lanyard kinda things that alot of cast members where - the small square at their hips with pins? Or something different? Cuz I think I might want one if you find it works Smile

Yeah... exactly like that. Mine has a theme of Stitch on it. They are a bit pricey but I bought mine open without the pins that are included with it. Yeah. Im curious to see if I like it. Im always paranoid with them when it comes to fast rides. I know on Everest, last minute I decided to take off my lanyard and was stuffing it in my cargo shorts... lol... so I'm hoping the hip lanyard will make things easier. I know you won't be able to hold as much, but it is double sided... and could get creative with it.

Now that looks interesting - I might think about that one. DH has decided he is going to commit the fashion faux pas of using a fanny pack. It's small, and it will be under his shirt most times, but I'm kind of teasing him about it. (He once had his wallet fall out of his pants pocket, and doesn't want a repeat of that!). He says he's an old fart now, and doesn't care what people think. What's next? Socks and sandals? eek

So many changes! Does all the security stuff really drag out getting in the park ? I understand about the finger scans - I used to see so many Disney passes on sale on ebay, with "guarantees" that they still had days on them. I'm sure there were lots of disappointed kids when families were turned away at the gates because the tickets weren't valid.

The bag search is not bad at all. It's not like a TSA search. I've never waited more than a few minutes. You'll see, it's very Disney-fficient.

I've only seen them find something prohibited once. A glass bottle of Snapple Ice Tea. They owner just opened it, guzzled it down, and disposed of the prohibited glass bottle.

I carry small zipped make-up bags in my larger purse (one's first aid, one's a change purse, one is camera acessories) and sometimes it takes them a long time. I've learned that if I unzip every interior bag and pocket I go through the security line really quickly. If I forget to unzip something, I sometimes get asked to take the smaller bags out and open them.

I agree, it's not bad. If you are carrying a bag that has multiple zippers you will need to open them all. Most of the time they just take a quick look. Although, this one guy at Epcot(Mike from L.A.) took forever going through my purse. He even had me remove my camera from the case so he could look in it. My camera in its case fits in my purse so it's not like I was carrying a big camera bag.
