Letterboxing at WDW

Okay, I'm new to the forum and admittedly have not gone through all the postings, so if this has already been covered, please forgive me.

Just wondering if we have any LBers out there...

I am an LBer, but I did not do any on this trip. I figured we had enough to do. But I would love to do some in subsequent trips. Any suggestions for boxes that are well worth it? Any interesting experiences out there...with muggles or otherwise? I'd love to live vicariously -- please share!

Wow! Well, I will def give you all the scoop on LBing...I will have to go more in depth a little later 'cause I gotta get the girl to school shortly here...but in short it is a treasure hunt...

Have any of you ever heard of geocaching?? It's kinda like that...but it involves less GPS usage -- we get our destinations from written clues -- and, usually, mostly, the treasure found is hand-carved stamps....once you find them you stamp them into your journal.

It is great exercise during the spring, summer and fall; usually it involves hiking in wooded parks....but I know for certain there are boxes hidden in and around WDW. I'm actually surprised by this 'cause the cast members seem to be pretty intent on keeping all the grounds very meticulous...maybe they are friendly to the letterboxes and let them lie if they find them...

When I get home I will post more info! Or you can also check out www.atlasquest.com for more info....although, if you read about it on the site it seems a bit more overwhelming and complicated than it really is...

I think I'm a little too grown up to know what is going on around here anymore.

Actually most people I know that letterbox are adults...it tends to be difficult to do with the younger set. The kids usually tend to poop out on the hikes and lose interest.

Mase, I'm not sure about this....I've never seen that, but it doesn't mean that it's not possible.

It is really a lot of fun if you enjoy figuring things out, going on the hunt. Some of the clues are sometimes even riddles or puzzles that you need to figure out before you can even begin to locate the box.

Really the best way to understand it is to just do it once. I was really turned off by the idea of it when someone just tried to explain it to me, but then once I went out and tried it I really enjoyed it. There are tons of boxes located here in Northeast Ohio and I've also boxed in Pennsylvania and the Outer Banks when I vacationed there a couple of years ago. There are literally boxes hidden all over the world.

Some of the pics I've seen of the WDW boxes are pretty intriguing. I saw one that was a beautiful rendition of the Beast's Rose behind the glass.

I'll have to get some links together to post some pics of what I mean.

I'd never heard of it before but it sounds like a blast. It actually sounds like something for those who like a slower pace (like me) could really enjoy. Thanks for sharing all the information about it.

Yes, Thanks, Tori! It sounds really interesting, and I love to learn about something new. It does sound like it would be a fun outing for grownups - and WDW seems like a neat place to do it! Looking forward to seeing your links.

I'm sure I am understating it, but is it along the lines of the KimPossible adventure? It sounds like ALOT of fun!

Nope never heard of this one either. But if Im in Disney, I'm doing Disney stuff, that keeps me busy enough. Please don't anyone take that the wrong way, it was not meant to be rude.

Never take you as rude, mrhub. Unless you call me an ass. Then I might... eek

KimPossible was an interactive quest game at Epcot. Took you around the World Pavilions on secret missions:

I hear ya...plus I felt like I didn't want to drag my boxing stuff with me on the plane, although I could have taken a condensed version of my "equipment." But I do know people who do it and wondered if anyone on here participated...

It kind of puts me in mind of the pins...people like to collect them, look for rare/unusual ones...I think those people who enjoy the pin collecting might enjoy something like this...

JeffC -- I'm not sure I know how the Kim Possible thing works...my girl was too pooped out most of the time to even bother trying getting her involved...and perhaps a little too young for it...but perhaps it is similar...

Here is sample clue and pic for one that is hidden near the Contemporary Resort:

"Disney's Beauty and the Beast

Owner: Nettles

Location: Disney's Contemporary Resort, Lake Buena Vista, FL

Plant Date: October 28, 2009

Last Modified: October 31, 2009

This box was planted by my husband and I in honor of our anniversary. We celebrated the evening by having dinner at the California Grill, which is seated atop Disney's Contemporary Resort and has some incredibly scrumptious food, as well as a great view of the evening fireworks. Our anniversary falls fairly close to Halloween, and this year, we had planned to be costumed as some of our favorite Disney characters, the Beast (humanly known as Prince Adam) and Belle. Unfortunately, about a week before our anniversary, our apartment flooded and we had no time to actually make the costumes. So, instead, I decided to create this letterbox to celebrate.

In order to find the box, you must make your way to Disney's Contemporary Resort at the Walt Disney World Resort. If you do not have season passes or dinner reservations for the Contemporary Resort, there is a way to get to the resort without paying for parking. You can simply take the resort buses from Downtown Disney, but it will take some travel time. Once you reach the Contemporary, look for the small guard shack that allows cars to pass in and out of the parking lot. Immediately after the guard shack, you will take a right (at a sign that leads to Self Parking), then another immediate right into a small parking lot closest to the road. As you travel into this lot, you will see a large assembly of blue pipes on your right. Park or walk immediately to the left of these pipes. You will see that there are two sections of fence which do not touch the ground. Under the section that is closest to the pipe, you will find the letterbox tucked into the low hedge on the opposite side of the fence.

There weren't too many Muggles around when we were planting this box and you shouldn't be terribly visible from the road, but please make sure to hide the box well in the hedge."

The pic of what the stamp looks like once stamped is attached.

I think that part of the fun of it is that you're probably going to be at these places anyway at one point or another while at WDW (i.e. I went through the Contemporary a good handful of times myself -- kinda mad that I did at least try to find one box now!)...and this gives it a little more intrigue. Especially for those veterans that would probably be surprised that they've walked by these boxes a millions times in their adventures! LOL

So it's essentially a box with a stamp and an ink pad in it and you go and stamp your book? Where do you get the clues at as to where to find them? And are you supposed to leave something else there in return? And how does no one ever pick them up and take them away thinking they are trash or something?
