Longer Trips

As I gain more experience with Disney World I become more interested in longer trips. One, because there's so much I want to do now that I know so many little things. Two, because I want to take a slow pace. A lot of you guys have been going for quite a while, do you find that as you get more experience and get older that you want to go for longer trips?

Quite the opposite. I first went to WDW in the early 70's, and have literally been 50 or more times in nearly 40 years since.

My wife and I find that we can do everything we want to do in about a four day period and thats how we plan things.

We have a select number of items on our "have to" list, and we've been known to hit three parks in a single day, so length of trip is not a big deal anymore.

Longer trips are a good way to "settle in" and not feel rushed. I don't feel that any MORE than I used to--it's just always been our policy.

I've always been a take-it-slow-er, but I think my pace slows down a bit as I get older.

Mine too. And not necessarily by choice.

It's better just to pretend that it's by choice.

It's exactly the same with me, I just have slowed down so it takes me longer to do what I want to do.

It just means we get to smell the flowers a bit more, my friends.

I know quite a few older folks who do WDW commando style and quite a few younger ones that take it easy. I think it has as much to do with personality as anything.

One thing I really love about long trips is the first night, the first dinner, when you're thinking "I have almost 2 weeks left here," and it seems like the sky is the limit.

Yeah, the first night of your vacation is always the best. All the things to look forward to....

I think my least favorite is the first day where the vacation is half over.

I like to take a longer vacation so we actually have time to relax. It's nice to be able to decide what you're doing and when on a whim. Trips are often so regimented (like most of our lives), it's nice to completely leave that at home now and them. That said, often times, we're not able to get away from work for 'extended' vacations.

It's funny how many people plan jam-packed vacations and then come home feeling like they need a vacation. I think a lot of people here have mentioned that phenomenon. I totally agree that the extended gives you a better shot of relaxing.

Yeah, having to plan trips around a crazy work schedule makes it a lot harder. This trip we only have a week (with both weekends), but to avoid leaving straight away after being on call then coming home just in time to go to bed and needing a vacation from our vacation...I planned this one for only seven days. That way, we can recoup and prepare before the trip and recover after.

I think that's really smart. Even though, when you're planning, you want to squeeze out every last ounce of Disney before you have to back to work, that extra day or two to recoup makes SO much difference.

Aren't "limited vacation days" a total drag?

Yeah, when you're that busy it definitely makes sense to have a few relaxation days. Although that is one nice thing about Disney, at least for me, is that it can be very relaxing since I know it so well.

I look forward to being in that boat. For this trip, it's going to be a bit of a whirlwind being DW's first real trip to the World.

Good to get some practice in. Hopefully she finds it as relaxing as the rest of us. It sounds like she's a theme park fan, so I'm sure she'll love it. It's definitely always nice when you get to just kind of coast along while the other person drives the trip.
