Luau v. Hoop-Dee-Do

I am thinking we may do one of these.....

Now, I know there are mixed reviews about Luau. I've actually been twice in my life. Once as a kid and I went with my mom and dad in August. We really liked it. I thought the food was good and the atmosphere. At times I thought the "performance" was cheesy...

Now, DH has never been to either. I will say we are much more "dress up" type of people than we are country hoe down. (sp?) See, I don't even know if I speak that language! haha

I want to have fun and have some romance! So, which one do you prefer? What times?

I will admit it's a pain in the rump to get to either resort. We are staying at the boardwalk.

I have never been to either but if I had to choose I would pick the Luau (for romance)... Although I have heard that the Hoop-Dee-Do is really fun.

There's also Jellyrolls that does the dueling piano's... Which is much closer to your resort... Or there is Yeeha Bob's Comedy Show in Port Orleans (watch some videos on youtube, he is hysterical).. We will be doing both of those as extra entertainment... You could have a romantic dinner at Flying Fish and head to Jellyroll's for entertainment... Or have a romantic dinner at one of the many restaurants in DTD, hop on the romantic boat ride to POR and head to Yeeha's for entertainment. Just an idea for you Smile

Thanks! I haven't been to Flying Fish yet, have you? Does it have a romantic feel?

Jellyroll's is more like a bar, right? I was thinking we may do that after Epcot or DHS closes...

Hoop dee doo for sure. The luau is lame and it is far from romantic. HDD is real fun.

Hrmmm... I don't consider either of those dinners very romantic. However romance is what you make of it and either of them could be fantastic with the right person. If I was just picking one of the two I would go for the Luau, because I think that the Polynesian is one of the most romantic resorts on the whole property.

I haven't been to the luau. The Hoop Dee Doo revue is a lot of fun. I don't know if they do this for the luau but after the HDDR buses were waiting to take us back to our resorts. There were 5 buses going to various "zones" so there are other stops before your resort. It made it nice not have to work my way back to the resort.

Hubby and I went to HDD in October and had a lovely evening. We sat on a table just the 2 of us. I find we can be romantic where ever we are Smile

We prefer the Luau over the Hoop Dee Doo, but its just personal choice I think. I definitely prefer the Luau's food over HDDR's.
Of the two, I'd have to go with the Luau for being the most in the romantic category.

I've seen both. HDDR for sure. The food is better and so is the show.

In my "Mickey Circus" trip report, I posted a report on our Spirit of Aloha luau, with pictures. So you may want to take a look at it.

Are they both only one credit on the dining plan? I'm thinking of doing the luau.

We have also done both and I agree that is is really a personal choice. You could take a carriage ride before HDDR and that is a bit romantic. Now that I know what to expect from the Luau I might enjoy it more. At least you know what to expect. We weren't expecting the little play/story line. The later part had different types of dances and this what we were looking for. And the tropical drinks Smile Even though they are very different I rate them about the same but might pick the Luau since it is nice sitting in the bar area for a drink prior to the show. We did this back at the hotel as we arrived quite early.

Nope, 2 table service.

I haven't done the Luau, just the HDDR. We had a fanastic time at Hoop Dee Doo and I'd completely recommend it, but it was more fun and loud then romantic. The Polynesian definitely has a more romantic setting so I'd go with that one if I was looking for a romantic dinner between the two. I do agree with Kristen, though, that neither of them rings classic romance to me.

For a romantic dinner for two, I highly recommend Jiko.

HDDR for sure. You can get way better seats with the dining plan. We found the luau kind of high school musicalish when we were expecting an actual luau. I have to admit though that the fire dance was pretty cool but the story line was not quite our cup of tea. At hddr we used the dining plan at the latest showing and got seats right up by the stage. We have also had seats up on the cat walk. Both were great! At the luau we had horrible seats. We used the dining plan but when we got there we were asked to sit and wait because they may be able to upgrade our seats. Boy we were excited. Well they finally seated us and we were at the farthest we could possibly be from the stage with a big pillar partially blocking our view and what they had done was pull apart a larger table to accomadate us and another couple. It almost felt like we had been made to wait to fill the better tables with cash customers. It really turned us off ever going back or recommending it to anyone else.
