On Musicals...

Teacherdrama et. al. have me wanting to talk about musicals, since they started up the convo in the podcasts thread.

Les Mis is just about my favorite, but I'm also partial to Tommy and I LOVED Mary Poppins when I saw it in London.

Another that I saw in London, which I've never seen nor heard of again (though it WAS a west end show), was Martin Guerre. Anyone? Anyone?

Ha - sorry about hijacking that other thread....

Cdub - to answer your question you posed there, Mamma Mia is fun, but the story is garbage. I've seen a number of jukebox musicals, and the only one that really worked for me was All Shook Up. I thought they did a FANTASTIC job there of building a very strong book around those songs.

bali -- I have both scores of Martin Guerre on CD - the first one that was released (the reddish cover) I think is MUCH better than the reworked one! I've never seen the show, but based solely on the score, I think I would have liked it. On the other end - it's hard to believe that the guys who wrote Les Mis and Miss Saigon came up with the HORRIBLE Pirate Queen!

laugh Everyone has an off day now and then!

Has anyone seen any of the other Disney musicals? Lion King or Beauty and the Beast? Is Little Mermaid opened yet? I keep getting HUGE discounts on shows in my email and wonder if DW and I should make a trip to NYC for a long weekend and a show sometime in the next several months.

That reminds me of another I saw recently that I really enoyed -- Wicked. I'd read the book and only been so-so on it, but I thought the songs and production were great. Have you caught that one?

We have Tix to Wicked when it comes to town. I thought the Movie Across the universe was an OK Jukebox musical.

Is Theater pretty popular in Indy? We have VERY limited options down here in Texas a lot of the time.

We have 2 main theaters in town and will usually get the main stream productions here about 6 months behind Chicago. (I believe "Ave. Q" is playing right now.) So most of what I want to see comes to tow, I just have to wait.

I would love to see Ave Q. Never did get the chance to see that.

I thought it was a great show, but it fell off the planet after that. Was it ever produced in NYC?

Martin Guerre was never done in NY - it died in DC I believe, after the changes were made.

Wicked was very well done -- since I'm a member of a lot of theater boards etc. the "fangirls" of Wicked kind of killed it for me, but I did enjoy the show when I saw it.

Avenue Q is FANTASTIC - very funny!

Of the Disney musicals, I've seen Beauty and the BEast (LOVED it), Lion King (OK, on a boot DVD, but still...very impressive show), Tarzan (TERRIBLE), Little Mermaid (had it's moments but didn't live up to what it could have been) and Aida (not terrible, not great). Haven't seen Lion King LIVE, and haven't seen Mary Poppins yet...

Ah. I can't remember much about Martin Guerre, except that I had front row seats because those are the ones that they sell last minute at the student rate when their regular owners don't show up. biggrin

I've also seen Beauty and the Beast, but my only other disney show, as I said, was Mary Poppins (truly incredible...I'm hoping they haven't changed too much from when it debuted in London).

I'm not a HUGE theater buff, but I know exactly what you mean by "fangirls." No wonder they've spoiled Wicked a bit for you silly

I'm having trouble visualizing a "Tarzan" musical. Did they do the Phil Collins songs?

You're not the only one - apparently the design team had a hard time visualizing it as well because the scenic design was crap. It was literally green plastic streamers. That's it. They did the Phil Collins songs along with some new ones - the music was bad...everything - just not a very pleasant show.

That's unfortunate. Maybe they were going to "new wave" and needed to just stick to the story...

Are they considering producing Nemo on Broadway?

I haven't heard anything about that. THey would need to significantly expand what they have in the park in terms of length to do it on Broadway - no way would people pay Broadway prices for a 35 minute show!

I think the Nemo show is great--they could do some interesting things with the "puppet" thing as they did with Lion King.

We LOVE what they did with it in Animal Kingdom. They would need to find a way to add a lot without overly bloating to do it in NY though, and the way the show is now is just the perfect length. I would say it would be a waste of resources....

I'm curious what Wicked fangirls are like. If they're fans of the book I would be particularly scared. The ethos of the book was a bit more...out there than the play.

Mostly they're girls ages 10-15 or so who think Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth are the be all and end all of musical theater performances. I'd be surprised if many of them would understand the book...

Think "drama" in a bad way.
