Neck Surgery - Done! * Scar picture added - view at your own risk! *

I am pleased to report that I am home now after a night in the hospital. My neck surgery was Friday afternoon.

The surgeon said the surgery was very successful - the bulging disc was putting severe pressure on the nerve. He also found a surprise he was not expecting - with all the extra pressure, a bone spur had formed and was part of the problem with all the pain I was experiencing. The irritated nerve is now "flapping in the breeze" as the doctor states - I may have ongoing issues/pain until the nerve calms down though.

The disc was completely removed, with a plastic insert put in its place (filled with all sorts of fun stuff) - everything is held together with a plate and screws. This is good news because I will not have to a wear a bulky hard neck brace.

But I do have a cool scar awesome

I'm so thankful that you're home, resting (I assume) fairly comfortably. Hopefully we can help to keep you well entertained during your convalescence Smile

So glad to hear it's all over (AND that you have a cool scar AND that you don't have to wear a neck brace, because that would just be no fun at all).

Now all you have to do is sit back, relax, and eat gingerbread caramel corn.

Glad you're okay Jeff! Rest up well etc. Hope it doesn't hurt. I have a scar a bit like that from a neck operation too. Mine has very much faded by now though!

Wow - you look like you're coming along great! Still feeling good? Have you noticed any relief yet from the pain that you were having, or is it too soon to tell?

I'm doing pretty well, thanks for asking Lizzy! I am down to 2 percocet a day, but still nap alot. I have ventured out a few times now but each time wears me out pretty good. Holding my head up seems to take alot of effort until the neck muscles figure out what they need to do.

The results so far are really positive - the numbness in my entire left arm is mostly gone, which was more frustrating than the neck pain. I'm hopeful the remaining pain is from the surgery and the neck muscles stretching due to the implant. But I can eat just about anything now with relative ease (big plus!).

2 odd unexpected side-affects - the percocet makes me itch all over, so I sometimes have to take Benadryl to offset that. And I have muscle spasms in my throat that make me hiccup ALOT. Drives me crazy. Hoping that goes away over time as well.

The scar is really clearing up well. So much for the mean, ruffian look.... laugh

Hmm..yeah..this was probably a much better reaction than calling it a car wreck. Sometimes I'm klassy.

I'm glad you're starting to feel much better..I hope you have a speedy speedy recovery!!

rolling I laughed out loud at the "scar picture added" comment, then finding out you're telling people a pirate slit your throat pretty much clinched it for me!

Very cool scar -- looks frankenstein-y awesome

That will be quiet believable seeing as how pirates are making a come back..and not just Johnny pirates like real ones with guns and stuff.

Jeff,

Glad you're coming along nicely. Did you get in a few punches at the pirate before he slit your throat?

Everyone, my gallbladder surgery is Friday (the nurse will call me tomorrow with the time). I'll be staying overnight at my brother's house, so I will likely be offline until Saturday night. I'll be off work until at least January 18. I am NOT looking forward to this.

Hey Jim!

Thanks for the note. The pirate walked away with a black eye and a bloody lip. I don't go down easy laugh

Best wishes for tomorrow with your surgery! You'll be in our thoughts and we look forward to hearing from you when you are back and able to type.

Had that surgery done a few years ago. It's not too bad, you'll just feel like you've been punched in the stomach 1000x for a few days. I found having a chair next to the bed to lean on helped in the standing up process the first day or two because my stomach muscles hurt too much to sit up on my own. Good luck. crossfingers

Good morning!

Spent the last two nights at my brother's house and had the surgery yesterday morning. The full medical term for this procedure is LAPARASCOPIC CHOLECYSTECTOMY, and the only reason I know that is that it's in the paperwork I brought home. The operation took about an hour, I was in recovery for an hour and a half, then went back to my brother's house. I have four incisions in my belly, and I feel as if 500 pirates of the Caribbean took left-right shots to my stomach. They all stood in line and came one after the other. I am on percocet as needed for pain. While I will try to get digital pictures of my scars, they will in no way compare to JeffC's scar from his surgery. I was very tense during the prep (reflected in my blood pressure), but in the end made my brother and sister-in-law proud by not wussing out. Because the anesthetic was fed through the IV (the nurses loved my veins because they were so easy to access), I didn't have to breathe in any stinky gas that makes me throw up. Yay me!
