Here's the link from the Disney Parks Blog for anyone that wants to read about it. No longer a rumour.

Ok, I just have a question though, they are saying that this is all taking place in from of the Chinese theatre. How are they going to fit all those people there? It does open up there a bit but still doesn't seem like it would be enough room to watch the show and fireworks. Also does this mean they are putting some kind of stage in front of the Chinese theatre which is going to interrupt the view and pictures coming into the park?

Concept Art over the past several years has actually been super close to what we end up with in the Parks. Let's look at the fireworks picture and see what we can extrapolate from it.

What I see in this image is a projection show that will take place across the face of the Chinese Theater, the old American Idol building, and possibly the One Man's Dream building. The fireworks themselves look like they're coming from the far back area of Lights, Motors, Action. The fire cannons and lasers simply need to be added to the roofs of the existing buildings.

With the Hat gone, there's actually a fairly large area there. The article mentions that the show will take place on Center Stage (already there in front of the theater), which is located where the people in the picture are standing. That makes me think that they may move Center stage back to the location where the hat was and removing the roof. While there is a row of trees right in front of the theater, the last picture I saw of them, they were not Palm trees, so I think we can expect some replanting there around where the Hat used to be, perhaps around the edges of the possibly new center stage location.

Think about how the crowd moves in the hub at the Magic Kingdom, and people line up back all the way down Main Street to watch the show, this seems to have a similar feel to that. Plus, with the removal of a little greenery at The Brown Derby Lounge, it looks like that will become a prime viewing area. As will the area near Min & Bill's with some Landscaping changes.

As someone who has spent significant time in Disneyland staking out my spot for Fantasmic! (which happens there on the Rivers of America, not in a stadium) you would be surprised at just how many people Disney can squeeze into an already high traffic area for a show.

I have not been since before the hat was removed. Its been almost 3 years (having serious with drawls) Looking at the Google map it looks like you are right if some trees are removed then it would be a good viewing spot. P.S. one of my favorite hidden mickeys as well! So cool!
