SO excited! This is my fave attraction!
Impressive director. I figure they probably had to make a big splash to make us all forget about the one with Eddie Murphy.
OK, this is very scary!!! That Eddie Murphy one was AWFUL!
Thanks for the news, Jess -- I'll be watching closely on this one!
Interesting idea -- I don't know why they even bothered with that terrible Eddie Murphy movie. Did they really just think "Pirates was a hit, anything will work!"
I guess it could be worse. It could be 90 minutes of It's a Small World!
Zipadeedoodah -- yeah, man
This new one has me a little bit concerned though, since the director has promised that the film will be very scary.
I have nothing against scary movies, to each his own, but, if it's too scary it'll detract from the spirit (pun intended) of the attraction. The Haunted Mansion, from it's inception has always been more about humor more than fright. The clues are all there (Grim Grinning Ghosts, Happy Haunts, Swinging Wake, etc).
I just hope this film maintains the integrity of the attraction.

edit: Initially I said I thought it would only be scary relatively speaking. The article I read made it sound like it was going to be a full-on scary (a la horror) movie...curious. Be interesting to see how this pans out. Although it would be bothersome if it is not in keeping with the "spirit" of the ride, honestly I haven't given much thought to the crappy Eddie Murphy one. Still love the ride as much as ever.
It is always one of the really cool things about the Haunted Mansion is that it's scary without being scary, if that makes sense. I remember when I rode it as a kid, I wasn't terrified even thought it was scary. When I see stuff like the hanging body in the entry room now I think "that's awfully graphic," but somehow it doesn't become unpleasant. It's hard to figure out how they achieved this and would be really hard in a movie.
Of course the director has done some really impressive special effects work and maybe he can do something that uses striking visuals to be eerie and creepy without being outright scary.
From what I have read it is supposed to be scary but not so scary that you can not take your kids to it. Scary doesnt have to be gory...scary can also mean psychologically frightening. I have heard that the hatbox ghost will be in this movie..believe me it can not get any worse than what they did with the eddie murphy one!
I read an interview with del Toro where he specifically said it will not be appropriate for kids.
I am really excited about this one.
I have been reading a lot of blogs about it and a ton of people are concerned with the scariness factor..and I think that is an issue..but..I think he is the perfect guy to make this movie. Apparently he is a HUGE Haunted Mansion fan..and often goes on the ride to "clear his head". I read he has an entire room in his house dedicated to the attraction. I think it's really interesting.
I don't think Disney would make anything that is truly haunting or terrifying...so I'm not too worried.
It's going to be a thrill ride for the whole family but it's definitely going to be scary" he said. (Walt) Disney is one of the creators of some of the scariest images in my childhood. People forget that he not only made sweet images but also images of nightmare. We need to honor that side of the legacy.
Yikes. I'm not a fan of horror or thriller genres in films, so I'm a bit nervous about this one. Hopefully you guys are right that it will be scary without being "terror."
On a side note, has Disney ever made a "horror" film?

"If you take the children, they will scream," Del Toro said, adding that he considered that "a litmus test of character."
Sounds like he's really going to do it justice. I didn't realize he was such a HUGE fan. He's taking this very seriously and the more I read about it, the more excited I get.
LOL well I wouldnt take a 3 year old to see it but my kids are 18 & 13 so I think we will be ok! I am way wicked excited for this movie!
LIFL and PsychoAlice, thanks for the info on Del Toro's intentions!! I'm pretty sure I'll be freaked out and the Haunted Mansion will never feel the same again after this one!
