"Next Monday" vs. "This Monday"

I was recently having a discussion with a stubborn person to whom I happen to be married and she was suggesting that "next Monday" is the "next Monday that will happen." So if it's Friday, "next Monday" is in three days.

I personally believe that "next Monday" is the Monday that comes after the soonest Monday. The soonest Monday is "this Monday." My recent polls have agreed with me. How do you guys come down on this very important issue?

I agree with the consensus here, but I get a surprising amount of disagreement on the subject.

Unless it's Tuesday or Wednesday, in which case next Monday could be Monday coming.

This is a tough one and I can see why it's causing confusion. For me, "next Monday" is the next Monday. The one that comes next. "This Monday" doesn't mean anything much at all to me, as it could mean the Monday in the week you are currently having (which could mean Monday past).

I'll stick to dates! biggrin

Good point. I typically don't use "Next Monday" if it's still a way off, as it could be confusing.
