No, no, no

Life is sometimes very unfair, I am severely dental phobic so try to sort things out with tea tree oil which normally works. I'm of an age that they filled teeth as opposed to anything else so have metal teeth. A couple of weeks back a small hole appeared from a filling going and it is an upper tooth so not easy for the tea tree to prevent infection. Yes you guessed it yesterday evening toothache, today a rather horrible experience of emergency dentist who couldn't do anything except charge me, numb my mouth just in case they were going to do something and give me a script that they didn't sign or date and therefore I couldn't fill. mad (oh and when I asked what do I do when I was on holiday if I had problems told me I would have to go to one whilst away - not that easy really). The local pharmacists were brilliant (after I had burst in to tears) and found a phone number for them and called for them to fax a signed script over. They said they didn't have a fax machine, then they said it was broken at this point I started to get cross and told them to pay 10p and use someone elses. They then said they would ring their other branch and get them to fax it over which eventually they did.

Here is the kicker the antibiotics they have given me (after a long discussion about all the ones I am allergic to) say don't drink alcohol, well I normally think yeah right, BUT these tablets are similar to the meds they give alcoholics to get them off the booze, so react badly with alcohol and make you unwell, laugh so boo hiss, I am not a heavy drinker but I like the odd cocktail and glass of wine!

Awww bless you - dentists and no tipple to reward you after!

I use clove oil to numb pain, managed to live with a broken tooth for ages but in the end the pain got so awful I had to go.

Hope it all goes well and that you get it sorted without too much discomfort or stress. And then when the antibiotics are done - have a large g&t to celebrate

Sally-Ann, I sure hope you're feeling much better and this has no effect whatsoever on your Disney plans (aside from keeping you away from the adult beverages).

If it's a filling going, is there some reason why the dentist couldn't put in a new filling? Does it need a crown or something?

Yeah really, can't they just refill it? I don't know what the dentists are like in the UK, but mine here in the states can do pretty much the whole procedure in the office in a day or two if you need a crown. He makes the crowns right in his office now with something like a 3d printer. Its actually pretty cool.

Thank you all

As it was an emergency dentist for a very large area they don't do much except stop the pain (which they didn't do). The tooth is more filling than tooth and when I suggested they just take it out they said they couldn't do that either as it would take too long. Dentists won't do much if there is an infection so give antibiotics and send you on your way to come back when the course is finished, hence the problem as I will be in the US. I M (excuse the pun) biting the bullet and booking with a dentist on return but just concerned if the infectio flares up again whilst on holiday.

There was one funny moment to all this there are two products you can buy here one is called anusol and one abusol one is for hemorrhoids, the other has lignocaine and for dental problems.... Yep when at the pharmacy I asked for the wrong one and got very odd looks before they realised what I really wanted! laugh

My dentist has one of those. I got a crown earlier this year. I got to see it being made. It was cool.

Sally Ann, there are definitely emergency dentists in the Orlando area (I had to look one up once myself), so if it comes to that you can get help and relief. But I hope it doesn't come to that; I hope the antibiotics clear up the infection and you don't feel so much as a twinge of pain again, or at least until you're back home and safely at your dentist's office.

I know what you're going through; I had a tooth that flared up once a year or so - a bit of mild pain, then a little worse, by the second or third day I was in agony and popping whatever leftover pain meds I could find around the house. And then the next day it was over. Of course it always happened when the dentists weren't working (holiday weekends, etc., and our dentists are Jewish so they don't work Fridays, either). By the time the dentist's office was open again the pain and the urgency were both gone, so I'd decide to put it off till the next time the tooth acted up. Finally it happened midweek, I got it looked at, got referred to an endodontist, got a root canal and a crown, and now I will never feel any pain from that tooth again. Sweet relief knowing that. So do your best to fight through the fear and get yours taken care of once and for all, you'll be so glad you did once it's over.

Thank you CCP x I am totally freaked by dentists, piercings, tattoos fine but dentists no. I think dental care is much better in the US from what I can tell. A 3D printer for crowns sounds pretty cool but seeing as they didn't have a fax in the dentist yesterday I'm not holding out much hope!

Well hope all turns for the better Sally Ann and it holds off until your return home. I would want to think how the insurance side of this would go if you had to have something done over here. Yes you could probably get it fixed immediately. If its infected, no one will work on the tooth until the infection is gone, but once it is, pulling it should be nothing. Judy had one pulled in less than 10 minutes and I think that was in and out of the chair!. She is also getting an implant to replace the tooth which takes several weeks in between visits.

Must be something going around, because I'm finishing up with a root canal tomorrow to resolve an aching tooth. It will not interfere with our WDW plans.

Sally-Ann, remember that a spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down. Good luck!

Thank you all, feeling a little calmer today as one of the Drs at work has given me a script for two more weeks of the antiobiotic just in case I need it and I have managed to get a dentist appointment for Weds afternoon so we will see what happens from that. Most of the time I'm pain free just when I think about it or poke it with my tongue it hurts. Luckily work is stupid busy at the moment as the temp replacing the person who is off sick is off sick herself, so don't have time to think!

Survived the dentist, glad I went as appears I had an abscess so they had to take the nerve out and he said flying would have made the pain worse due to the pressure. Tooth has been left open (no filling allowing it to drain). Dentist found that apparently a previous dentist had tried to do something and had left a small amount of wadding in there and filled over the top. I have no idea which one or when as dental visits are something I block very quickly. Down side is that to get it properly fixed is going to cost nearly $1000 or to have it pulled in hospital at nearly $290 as it involves cutting into the bone. Am going to ignore all of this and try and enjoy my holiday with a ruddy big hole in my tooth, but at least it should be pain free. clapping

Sally-Ann I am so glad that you are feeling better. I understand about having a dental issue before leaving for Disney. Last year I had a tooth pulled three days before I left for Disney.
