I had a friend in Nashville who read 700+ books a year. It's been almost ten years since I talked to him about that, but when I worked with him that number went up several years in a row. That's really his only hobby. He stays home with his dogs and reads (and goes book shopping). He's a big mystery fan, goes to the conventions and all.

edit: In retrospect, I don't remember exactly what the number was, but I do remember it was staggering to me. I know it was well over a book a day, but might have been just under two a day average.

LIFL, you have a lot of interesting friends. I hope this one belonged to as many libraries as possible!

I have been blessed to meet some very interesting people. This guy was largely misunderstood. Because of his level of intelligence, most people could not relate to him. Most just thought he was really weird.

Probably why he liked dogs. My staggering intellect is why I love dogs as well. biggrin

I just learned of it from one of my cousins. She loves it and just raved about it. Many of her friends are on it and they form book clubs and post their reviews. Now she is retired and has time to keep up with it, but even to just use it as a book list - read and unread - would work for me.

I entered 54 books last night, the read and unread that I could remember. Wish I had started a book list when I was younger...I'll never remember everything I've read...oh well sarcastic

I'd be interested in participating in a book club with folks here if anyone is interested. No idea what we'd read but it could be fun...

A book club sounds cool! I can go check out some info on starting one over there, too!

I have entirely too many books yet to read, so I go out of my way not to find any more I want to read. Between DW and I we have (guessing) gone into triple digits for our 'to be read queue'.

That said, I enjoy non-fiction such as true crime, and historical accounts such as this one about Carlos Hathcock. He was the greatest sniper (and widely regarded as such) this country has ever known. That said, I'm not aware of a better one from elsewhere either. He was also largely responsible for the creation of our sniper program as we know it. If you're into that sort of thing, this is one of the most compelling books I've ever read. I couldn't put it down; read it in a day or so. Went back and read it again at a later date.

I also enjoy fantasy such as Robert Jordan and the Gotrek and Felix novels. The latter don't have the mass appeal that RJ books do, but they are right up my alley. If you enjoy fantasy that does not hold back (where the battles are described in such detail, it's as though you can really see/feel/smell the goings-on), I would recommend these highly. Not for the squeamish, but I enjoy the gory details. Somehow the author works in some great humor as well.

I'm NOT a big gory detail fan, so I won't be getting the latter novels, but the sniper one sounds interesting. I'm into non-fiction lately.

@Annie and @glassslipper @Millie I just looked into Goodreads and we can start a group with not too much problem. If anyone knows someone who might like to join as well, I'm sure we can add them. Let me know if you guys want to make a group Smile

@Bali - I'd be up for it, but how will we ever decide what to read! I've been into Suspense/Spy/Conspiracy reads lately...sound interesting to anyone? Do we want to maybe go with something new coming out? Dan Brown has a new novel coming out in September, The Lost Symbol...any interest?

As a fellow RJ fan I used to always joke that he would die before he finished. Now that it's actually happened I wish they would just hurry up and release whatever end they're going to make and let me know what all happens.

@Bali - as usual the books were definitely better than the movies...not that the movies were bad, just the books were so much better!!

Speaking of Robert Jordan, apparently the "last book," is now going to be two books and the first one of them is getting close to release. I'm not really familiar with the author so I don't know what to expect.

Sorry, I have been a little MIA recently, doing more lurking than posting. I have read both angels and demons and the da vinci code by dan brown . . they were very good. I would be interested in reading the lost symbol or whatever the exact name of his next book is.

Sounds like maybe that should be our first book in the book club. I'm traveling a bit in August and September, so I'll get the club set up in the next week or two, then we can plan on reading Dan Brown's new one as our first REAL book.

Anyone have a suggestion for an interim book for the couple of weeks before his comes out?

Awesome!! I look forward to getting this started.

Not sure if I have any suggestions for an interim book, but I will think about it. Right now I am trying to get through robinson crusoe. It doesn't have any chapters, so it is hard for me to set goals to get through . . . hopefully this weekend I will be able to sit down and finish it.
