Oranges Oranges Everywhere

When I was growing up (call that the 70's and 80's) we used to drive down to Disney World from Chicago a couple of times a year. I have wonderful memories of miles and miles of Orange Grove, little citrus stands dotting the landscape, and gift shops that sold Orange EVERYTHING.

Did you know that you can still visit Florida Orange growers? At Ridge Island Groves, they have a "You Pick" section. Now I want to go pick my own oranges! Maybe I'll order a "Florida in a Jar" so I can feel like I'm on vacation.

You can also visit Florida's Natural Brand Grove House

Have you visited an Orange Grove?

Thanks, Kristen! We actually have orange groves near where I live, and they dot the landscape throughout. Oh, FL...please hold onto our orange groves.

Mmmmm...now I have a hankering for orange marmalade and orange blossom honey Smile

I remember traveling with my parents and getting to stop at the orange juice stands - the drive thru kind shaped like oranges! I seem to remember them being everywhere.

And I did get to pick oranges in an Orange grove once! On a driving trip, we were visiting a friend of my Dad's and he took us out to a grove and we picked a lot of oranges. . To smuggle home!!!

I remember those from when I was young and we drove down to Disney

My clearest Disney memory is sitting in the kitchen counter in the condo we were staying in and eating oranges. There was an orange tree just off our patio.

whenever I drive back & forth from NC to FL I always have to stop at one of those orange stands and get my grandpa some Orange Blossom Honey. He loves that stuff!

Love Orange Blossom Honey. I love the scent of oranges, both the fruit and the blossom. I've been looking for a good orange blossom perfume for years. I can remember one at those little stands from my childhood but I just haven't been able to find anything like it up here in Illinois.

Try L'Occitane. This is an orange blossom scent:

I've been thinking that i would really like to make a stop for some orange things on this trip, though I don't expect to make a day trip there, just a short stop for a little shopping. We'll be coming down 75 then onto 91, where should we stop? Does anyone have a regular place?

Well, you know, I was part of Citrus Royalty back in the day....ok, so it was 1969 - I'm the small one, second from the left. My mom and 2 older brothers. We used to go to Cypress Gardens as kids. I remember stopping and picking oranges along the way as well! But no idea nowadays.

laugh That's so awesome!

I think I tracked down a place just off 75 south of Ocala. The Citrus Palace, we'll see if I can find it.

GREAT picture Jeff!!!

I remember when we made our trips we always stopped at a place where the was a huge tower of some sort that you could go up in and see miles and miles of orange groves. Free OJ and orange slices. One thing about flying now is that you miss all those places you grew up seeing.

Anyone else remember those short little plastic tubes with the jagged edge that you could stick straight into an orange and drink the juice straight from the orange? I could never get mine to work and just ended up frustrated and sticky. However, this is the only thing I remember from my very first trip to Disney - the little juice thing for the orange (and it wasn't even affiliated with Disney, it just happened to be on the same trip).

Yes! I totally remember those... those were awesome in that never really worked but fun for a kid kind of messy way.

They were called mini juicers and you're right they never worked. But when you're a kid it was a lot of fun trying to juice your own orange.

OK, so this is totally the wrong side of the Country, but I grew up at Disneyland. I have been pinning onto my Vintage DL / WDW board and just recently came across this pin. Then I saw your thread and thought it was the perfect place to share this. No, I do not remember this, I was born in 73.
