Pete's Dragon

I just watched the preview trailer for Pete's Dragon on the Disneyland 60th Anniversary special, and I must admit, I'm already disappointed. They've completely changed the venue in which the story takes place from the seaside to a forest. I guess they had to make it more realistic? Maybe? Who knows, and I'm sure that most people won't care, but I'm a water girl and it makes a difference to me. Pete also seems much younger than I remember. In the original isn't he more of a tween sort of age? This version almost seemed like Pete was a Mowgli type character in this preview.

That being said, I've been in love with Robert Redford since I was 12, so I guess I'll still be seeing the movie. LOL!

Did anyone else see it? What are your thoughts?

Someone made a similar comment on one the Disney groups on facebook.

I'll certainly see the movie, but you're right, the preview really did look a lot like The Jungle Book- I would've never guessed it was Pete's Dragon without the introduction.

Not convinced by this - I need to see more of Elliot (that was what they called the dragon, right?) to make my mind up. Making the characters younger seems to be a trend which I'm also not a fan of and why make him feral? Can't kids in towns or by the seaside make a dragon exist as well? Why is it always feral, or uncontrollable, kids that seem to be the focal points now?

Agreed with everything everyone has said. He DEFINITELY looks like Mowgli and has the same story line as Mowgli. What I don't understand about it is...if they wanted to make a movie about a little boy who lives in the jungle and is wild but who has a dragon friend, why didn't they just make up a new story and call it something else? Why call it Pete's Dragon when it's NOT Pete's dragon. That would be like making a live movie about a goldfish who was saved from the feeder fish tank at the pet shop and who's life goal is to become a Vegas show fish and calling it Finding Nemo. Just be original and make up a new dang movie!

I'll probably rent it to watch but with the idea that this IS NOT Pete's Dragon, a movie that I used to own the read-along book and audio tape. I can repeat back large portions of that movie.

I am not sure if I want to see it. They have changed it so much. I loved the original and even had the song from the movie played as I walked down the aisle.

Was it Candle on the Water? That's one of my favorites.

No, no, that's Elliot's first cousin Puff who lived by the sea. Not to be confused with their second cousin Piff... he lives in Vegas.

Yes it was! Love that song so much, it was perfect to walk down the aisle to. The song we danced to after the wedding was Once Upon A Dream from Sleeping Beauty.

There's just too many dragons these days. Can't keep track of them.

To what someone said about Petes age, in the Main Street Electrical parade, he's about 12 years old. At least Elliot is still green.

I don't know if I'll see the "live" action Pete's Dragon. I loved the original and I am getting crotchety in my old age and hate when studios start messing with my memories.

Still need to see what colour green Elliott is in the movie...and if he's called Elliott or not!

I still haven't decided if I want to see this movie yet. According to the Disney Parks Blog "In early August, Guests at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park can stop by the "Pete's Dragon" activity table at Rafiki's Planet Watch in front of the national parks map. Pick up a "Pete's Dragon" button and take part in a puzzle game about our national parks. In the film, the character played by Bryce Dallas Howard is a ranger in a Pacific Northwest Park.

Surprisingly, it's not getting bad previews

Do you plan on seeing this new take on Pete's Dragon?

I also love Candle on the Water- was hoping for a remake of it with the live action, but I'm sure they will have some random pop song instead laugh

muchlove Oh my gosh! I am so happy that I went to see Pete's Dragon. I honestly believe this may be the best family movie that I've seen in 20 years. It is everything a Disney Movie is supposed to be - I laughed, I cried, I was thrilled on the edge of my seat. It's fantastic!

Has anyone else seen it? What did you think? It was lightyears better than I expected it to be, I really think that they knocked it out of the park with this one.
