Poly...Double Beds??

When I was first looking for a resort for my fiancee and I, for this past trip we went on a couple weeks ago, I was checking out Poly. I wanted a romantic vacation, and after I saw there were no king beds, it was a total deal breaker. I mean, it kinda worked out since I got an incredible blockbuster deal on a savannah club level room at AKL anyways lol, but am I missing something? confused

It's a DELUXE resort! Where are the king beds? I can go down a level to moderate and grab king bed rooms at POR...CSR..etc. My fiancee told me afterwards that she would've been totally fine with 2 queens, but I really wanted that *romantic* aspect of it all.

What are your thoughts on this?

Yeah, I don't get the double bed thing, at any resort. I guess it would be ok if I were sharing a room with a friend or coworker.

I also don't get why I have to pay more for a king bed than a room with 2 queens. Fewer sheets, less cost to launder and clean the room, right?

The Poly does have king beds if you book a suite. I will admit this was a big turn off for the resort to me when we were younger. Then on one trip in which we were booked in the Cariabbean Resort and had requested a room with a king size bed, it happened. They did not have a king room available unless we were willing to change rooms during our stay. I had no interest in changing rooms as we do unpacked and "move in" when we first arrive. They did give us a slight upgrade to a water front room since no kings were available. I discovered something wonderful that trip. Having my own bed! What a great thing. I could sit up and read at bedtime without worrying about bothering Mrhub. I could get in and out of bed, throw the blankets on and off all night long or even have a midnight snack of a cookie all without trying not to wake him up. As far as it being a romantic trip goes, having two beds does not make a difference. Sure I would still rather have a king size bed but having my own bed does come with great benefits!

In all honesty, being a DVC member and having only one queen and a pull out couch in the studios bothers me far more. We most often take a one bedroom just to get the king size bed. That ends up costing us a lot more points when all we really want is the bigger bed.

It's all about fitting famines in the rooms. 2 queen size beds, 1 for mom & dad, one for kiddo's. Simple as that!

Yes, I get that.......sorry, I should have said "full" size. I don't understand full size beds. And I still don't understand why I have to pay more for a king sized bed.

It's just kinda crappy....

Because when you're two 20-somethings trying to book an engagecation, wedding, or possible disneymoon lol, 2 queen beds don't exactly seem too appealing. Love

And it's a shame because that whole Polynesian/Hawaiian tropical theme along with it being a nice luxurious deluxe resort is a HUGE draw for us, as well as other couples looking for a romantic getaway in WDW.

Haha, speak for yourself (which I'm sure you are)!

We've been in situations where we have two double beds instead of one queen or king, and we usually end up using the second one as a couch by propping up extra pillows along it. Though I prefer the bigger beds on vacation because we have a double, I don't find that it takes away from anything.

I agree totally CC. If you want a king size bed at the Poly, shell out and book the honeymoon suite. It's been like that for 40 years, I don't see it changing anytime soon.

Mr. Hub is right, it's all about getting families in rooms. That's where the money is, especially at Disney. King rooms cost more, because with fewer people in the room, and less people requesting them they have to make up that revenue someplace. It is a business after all.

According to the Disney website the beds at the Polynesian are queens, not doubles. I know that makes a big difference to me as a larger person. However I guess I just don't understand what's not romantic about it? I mean it's a hotel, and that's been the standard configuration for rooms as long as I've been traveling. You're not required to use both beds, just pick one. Is an extra bed in the room really going to spoil the romance? Really?

If the answer is yes, then I guess my advice it to shell out the money for the suite.

My mom's second-thinking about how great an idea a WDW wedding is. And we can't just do the Memories wedding because that's just a ceremony. As she said, "there's no way we can invite 30-40 people from our family to go all the way down to Orlando for just a ceremony". So the Wishes wedding which is like all the bells&whistles weighs in at around $14,000 - $18,000 for the whole shabam. Yikes.

Suddenly something here at home on Long Island, NY could possibly be more cost efficient. That way, as my mother says, "you can just get money from everyone, have 2-3x the amount of people go, then you guys can just take all the money and run off to your honeymoon."

Small wedding in 2014 you say? Honeymoon in 2014 you say?

Suddenly a return trip to WDW in summer 2013 looks HIGHLY likely!!!

I can hear my fiancee now..."a Disney vacation a year away from our wedding?? We're supposed to be saving.." biggrin Aren't I a gem? lol

Got to admit, that's what happened with us. We just had a fun party and requested no gifts because we didn't need anything. Of course people gave money as gifts anyway, so now we are able to take this trip in January for our anniversary.
