Publishing?

So I've written a young adult fantasy novel that I'm trying to get published. I've sent to some agents already, but been rejected (as, I'm told, is usual). Anyway, the research I've done all seems to show that networking is the best way to get published.

So...does anyone here have any experience with publishing, contacts in publishing, experience with young adult fiction etc...?

I figured this community has been so wonderful, it couldn't hurt to try reaching out here...

Never hurts to reach out! I wish I had some direct contacts for you! Maybe if you either post a couple of synopsis paragraphs here (or a link to a website about the manuscript), people who land on the page could get a little better idea of what you're pitching.

I have a friend who is a romance writer.

I think she has 17 books in print in multiple languages. If you have specific questions, I'd be glad to ask her.

Congratulations! clapping Just remember, Madeleine L'Engle and JK Rowling both know rejection well, and both have created classic series. Keep going and Good luck!

Haha - I don't know what ended up happening there!

I was trying to say that I'm not comfortable posting the whole novel on the web, but I WOULD love some feedback from some people interested in young adult fantasy or just love the genre in general. ANyone with contacts in the industry would be even better!

I've tried cutting an pasting my synopsis twice now (hence the messed up posts, I think), but it keeps not working. I'll try again in a separate post...

Before White tells the story of Jack, the sixteen year old prince of Le Chars, France (an alternate version of our world, which will play an important role in my anticipated sequels) whose home is attacked by invading wizards, seriously injuring his father, the king. The court wizard Gedrall discovers that an important object, The Basket of Life, had been stolen from its owner by a powerful and legendary wizard. With the Basket missing, it seems that no one is able to die, thus disrupting the natural order of the world. Jack is sent out of the castle to retrieve the Basket and return it to Mount Chron where it belongs. Along the way, Jack is helped by Helen, a budding wizard; Quop, a sometimes invisible winged dragon; Stan, a teenager who is deeply conflicted about where his loyalties should lie; and Seraph, a Demon-Fairy with a secret debt to pay. Through the course of their adventures (which include a confrontation with a poison-spitting rodent, three witches who attempt to steal Jackâs soul, a menagerie of magically altered animals, and a showdown with an ancient wizard with a tangled past), the Basket is returned, the teenagers make hard decisions about who they choose to be (for example, Jack needs to decide whether or not he should return the Basket at all, knowing it would mean his fatherâs death), and questions Jack held about his fatherâs life are finally answered.

Apparently this doesn't like me cutting and pasting, but that's the best I can do.

I guess apostrophes don't translate well?

They never translate in your emails either babe. I hope someone can help, the book is REALLY good, now is just a horrible time since publishers are publishing fewer new authors due to the economy.

Before it becomes a love-fest I'll just say it's great to have the support of an awesome woman!

Now --- the book? silly

I think bali was mainly suggesting to get a synopsis up so someone might land here by the keywords. silly

Ahh, I get what you're saying. Not sure that "Disney" and "wizard" are exactly going to hit on my book though!

I'm just hoping someone on here knows someone...

I've been published in non-fiction, but I probably can't be of too much help. I can say that knowing someone at the publisher is key. We didn't even really have to sell our book, although we were capitalizing on a fad. I unfortunately don't know anyone in the fiction world, but I think you're being wise to try the "six degrees of separation" method. Probably someone you know, knows someone who knows someone, so it's a good idea to put it in people's head. So who knows I might be talking to someone tomorrow and think "they might know someone" and bingo. I'll keep it in mind.

Thanks -- that's the idea! Hopefully somewhere someone will be able to help!
Anyone with some spare time on their hands interested in reading and critiquing? PM me if so (so we don't FLOOD the boards with requests, of course!)

Awesome - thanks! I really had no idea how buddy-buddy the publishing world was until I tried to get into it!

Well, I had some good news on the publishing front today. A short story I wrote got accepted by an upstart sci-fi/horror magazine and it's going to be published in mid-August! I get paid 40 dollars, which isn't much, but the fact of being published is really what I wanted and am excited about!

clapping clapping clapping

Those first few stories are the HARDEST! Then you have clips, a reputation, and a network.

That's really great news. As SpaceAce says, I wouldn't worry much about what you're getting paid and look at all the bright spots. Particularly the contacts and the by line. Be sure to give us a link when it's up.

I will, though I think it'll be a five dollar download or to buy the magazine in print.
Like you said, the money doesn't matter, it's being able to put this on my resume and in queries that excites me!

I do mostly write fiction since that's my interest, but I do some non-fiction writing especially as models for my students. My primary interest, though, is in fiction - I "specialize" in fantasy/sci-fi/horror and stories with a twist or unique structure -- or any combination thereof.

It's kind of like looking for someone to marry. It can be frustrating and take a long time, but it only takes one!

My first published story is available here: http://www.scribblersandinkspillers.com/emeraldtales.html

in Volume One, Number One SFh (the supplemental magazine). Shameless shill -- please buy it (even it's only electronic!). It's only five dollars, and if you enjoy scifi/fantasy/horror at all, you'll find SOMETHING here (hopefully along with mine!) that you'll enjoy!
