Good morning! Just curious to see if anyone has ever rented DVC points for your Disney vacation and what your experience was. Would you recommend it?
There are several people on the forum that have rented points before and still do. I've hear nothing but good comments about doing that.
I've rented through Davids DVC Rental. Thus far, it's been really easy, but the trip isn't until Nov, so I suppose there is still time for things to go wrong!! Making the reservation was easy, I filled out the form which required a $90 deposit, refundable if they couldn't fulfill my request - which they couldn't. They did offer me some alternatives, one of which worked for me, so I booked. Payment is in full and non-refundable at the time. They will work with you if you want to do the dining plan, however, that is booked through the DVC member, so they do recommend that you buy gift cards and use those to pay for the dining plan, as opposed to giving the member your CC info. I didn't get a dining plan, so that's all I know about that. I did have to make one adjustment to the guests coming with me, I send David's an email, they sent the member the info, and in a few days all was taken care of. The only thing I have a concern about is the Magical Express. Apparently I will put the info in at the 60 day mark when I check in online, so I'll report back on if that works out well or not!!
I paid $13/point. I think they are up to $14/point now, but that could just be for 2014 (I haven't checked again for any dates in 2013).
If you have any questions, let me know!!
I've actually been thinking about renting points for our next trip. I seen on David's DVC that you should book 11 months in advance thats a bit far out for us. We usually book 6-7 months in advance. Do you think that 7 months in advance for October-November would be ok? Also, does anyone know if you are eligable for the free dining plan when you rent points assuming they offer it?
I rented points for last years trip for 2 nights at AKL and this year I've rented pointed for our September trip. Now we are owners hopefully we won't have to rent anymore. I didn't use David's, I rented from other owners in the uk via a uk forum.

Spook, it is my understanding you do not get the free dining if you rent points.
No spook, anything involving DVC can not get free dining.
No to the free dining, you're not eligible for free dining if you have an AP or a discounted room either, so you sort of have to see what works in your favor. I did not book 11 mo out, probably more in the 8mo out range. I think if you're flexible on where you stay, booking 6-7 mo out is probably okay but if you're dead set on staying in a particular resort, then you should try to rent at 11 mo out. David's first looks for room availability and then will match you up w/someone who has the right number of points at the particular resort.
We rented points for our last trip in May. I rent from a TA who owns like a million dollars worth of DVC contracts. Ok, not that much, but they personally own MANY contracts. She is by word of mouth only and based out of NY. She only charges $12 per point. She also handles your ME info, can set up dining plan purchase, etc. I booked last November for our May trip and we wanted the BWV. We were only able to rent a preferred room at that time because standard view was completely booked.
She also does not require money up front just to check availability like David's. She requires 50% down I think and the rest is due 60 or 90 days before your check in date.
We had a great time and it was much cheaper than just booking a deluxe room via Disney.
I figured it would be a no go for the free dining plan. Ah well.
