San Angel?

Hey guys,

I have not eaten inside Mexico at San Angel in (gasp) almost 20 years! It has a special ambiance like BOG does, but I do know the downsides I have seen too. I just read some good recent reviews- thoughts?

It is kind of one of those "experience over food things" in my mind, but the menu looks interesting.....

We ate there on our last trip. The ambiance is my favorite thing about the restaurant. The food is really good, too. They "try" to be more authentic with shredded beef v. hamburger meat, etc....I really enjoyed my entree and dessert! It will not disappoint.

Two things I did not like: The tables are REALLY close to each other, especially tables for two. I felt like the people next to us were a part of our conversation...it was a little weird. AND it is dark so it was hard to see the menu! The little candle on the table helps with that! mickey

Thanks Eeyore! The tables for 2 at BOG are like that too - it is communal dining. biggrin

Think I will give it a try while staying at BW. I think they do an AP discount - will check when.....

Megan and Mandi were just there on their family trip and had good things to say! We were considering it for our December trip but Coral Reef won out.

While the food is decent, and the apparent ambiance lovely, I'm always let down by the overall experience here. To me it's very loud, the tables are jammed in too close, it's almost too dark to read the menu or even see the person across the table from you, the servers are always very rushed and not always very attentive. Hrmm... maybe that's because its so dark they can't really see what's going on at their tables.

It's not a bad restaurant, it just never quite lives up to what I want it to be.

They may be different now, but last time I ate there was about 2 1/2 years ago. That was the 3rd time I've had a meal there. None of those three times were memorable. In fact, I was highly disappointed with all the dishes that I ordered because they were what you'd expect at a typical "Tex Mex" restaurant. I wanted authentic Mexican dishes, different from what I can get from a standard US Mexican joint.

So after three tries, it will take a serious amount of convincing to get me to go back.

Actually, I thought that La Hacienda de San Angel has better food, better atmosphere, and better view, especially if you get a reservation at 8:00 pm at night for a 9:00 pm Illuminations.

Completely agree with this!
