So, you want to audition for American Idol Experience...

Hey, all, on my trip back in October 2013, I had the luck to perform in the show. Now, it has been rumored that AIE might not be around too much longer, so for those of you who want to get on while you can, here's what I did to get past the first audition. Remember, in the first audition, you sing 30 seconds of one song of your choice a cappella followed by a song from their songlist.

1) Get there early. Now, there's some flexibility on this, as on some slow days, you've got cast members walking around scrounging for auditions, but it's best to get a head start, especially if you're lucky enough to get through to the second audition, because more song choices will be available to you for the show.

2) SMILE. This is the most important thing. Smile when you introduce yourself to the casting director, smile while you're singing, and smile while you're getting feedback. They want high energy fun people on the show, and smiling like there's no tomorrow helps convince them you're a high energy fun person.

3) While you can sing anything for your first choice, pick something the casting director is likely to have heard of. Yes, you might sing that obscure indie rock song perfectly, but it helps if you sing something familiar.

4) Your two choices should be different in style or tempo. If your first song is a country tune, then pick a pop or rock song from their songlist to follow it up. If you start with a slow song, follow it up with something upbeat. Guests with versatility are going to be more appealing than someone who can only do mournful ballads, no matter how good they are.

5) Have fun! This ties back to number 2, but really, just enjoy yourself. If you're nervous, stop by for a cocktail at the Tune-In Lounge first. Wink Relax and have a good time.

If I can ever drag sister and her family away from Universal and Harry Potter, I want to get her to try out for AIE. She can SING. I mean, REALLY sing. As in, had operatic training, but also knows how to bring it down a notch and sing popular stuff. She would kick butt in that competition.

Well, again, the Tune-In Lounge is right across the lake from the AIE theater; just sayin'.... Wink

SO want my husband to do this! I tried to get him to tryout last trip and it was a no go. We met in a musical and are both big musical theatre nerds and he has an awesome voice so I think this would be super fun! Do you just go to the AIE theater to audition first thing in the morning?

There's a spot around back (around the area with the Sci-Fi Drive-In, the ABC Commissary, and the Writer's Stop) where you go and check-in (they'll ask you if any relatives are currently employed by Disney or FOX) and then you go in and audition. You don't have to do it first thing in the morning; depending on crowd levels and how many people are auditioning, you can do it in the afternoon. If you get lost, look for a cast member holding AIE signage, and they'll direct you where to go.

I like to watch the performances, but the host and the judges just creep me out. Just how much cute, peppy, hip, upbeatness can I take in a half hour? Not that much. Too pitchy dog.

Both my DH and I are musicians too, but my DH will NOT go to that park when they are doing AI! He has had too many groups perform there and enjoyed their experiences, but not on that stage. He doesn't even watch the show. Now Britain's got talent he watches ....go figure.

I can't watch AI especially when they are weeding out all of the bad singers. I just can't do it. It hurts my ears. eek

Luckily, that part of the show the audience doesn't get to see. That's all handled backstage. Guests only get to see the good singers. Like me. Attractive too. And modest. I am SO modest.
