Solo Traveler --> WDW in August

Hi, everyone.

I'll be traveling solo to WDW in August 2010 and was wondering where the nightlife events are for adults? I'll be staying at Pop Century, which I believe has a bar alongside the pool area. Looking more towards the Downtown Disney/Boardwalk areas. Any dance clubs on the properties? I won't be renting a car, so WDW bus shuttle will be my transportation.

Any suggestion? Thanks in advance.

jerseyleo: welcome to WDWFG you will find the answers to your question from many of our members and some specialize in solo travel. At the Boardwalk you will find Jellyrolls and Atlantic Dance club and the ESPN Zone all great places to visit, also most of the pools have "adult friendly" places to sit and relax. Down Town Disney has had most of the clubs closed so as far as I am concerned it has lost much of its attraction and draw but there is still much to see and visit.
Is this your first visit to WDW or have you been before. We'll all be glad to help you plan your adventures at Disney.

I've visited in the past - but with family and friends, which did not allow me the chance to go out to nightclubs and such.

I DO remember, years ago, Pleasure Island. I so wish it would be brought back as that location was absolute FUN.

I thank you for your suggestions. If anyone else has other suggestions, please share. Smile

There are a couple of places left to dance. Atlantic Dance Hall is the first one that comes to mind. You can definitely get up and dance at some of the place at Downtown Disney, although all the Pleasure Island clubs are closed.

Welcome to the boards!

Hey Jerseyleo! Welcome to WDWFG!!!

Vettelover covered just about everything, but I can highly recommend Jellyrolls! It's a blast and is great for solos.

I also love the wings at ESPN Zone -- great place to watch sports.

Thanks, everyone! I'm loving this - hahaa...

When I was at Pleasure Island at Manaquins (remember that place?) a lot of cast members were hanging out there. Is it the same now with Jellyrolls? Or, someplace else?

to my knowledge, jellyrolls has dropped Its cover charge for cast members, so quite a few do hang out there. I know that tuesday night is unofficially 'cast member night' there, so those are hoppin. Jellyrolls is known for getting crowded every nite though! Lots of fun!

Welcome!!

I've heard great things about Jellyrolls!

Also, it's not exactly a direct bus route but when we stayed at POR the bar was packed every night! We hung out there several times and had a great time. Not exactly a "dance club" kind of place but it was great! We met lots of people those nights!

What about Ye-Haw Bob at POR! His show is a LOT of fun, and while it's not a "nightclub" vibe, it is a great show.

POR? ??? Is that Port Orleans Resort? I was "this close" to booking a room there!

My slight fear is that I am staying at Pop Century and will not be renting a car. So, transportation will sort-of, kind-of, be limited. Are shuttles running between resorts in the late evenings?

Worse case sinerio is that I'll have to find a cab someplace. Ugh...lol

There is Disney transportation to get anywhere in the World. The busses, I believe, stop running about 12 or 1 am during the week and about 2 Am on weekends. Could be wrong because we never stay up that late. No shutles run between resorts. You must go to a theme park or Downtown Disney to catch a ride to another resort. The monorail stops a 3 resorts and Magic Kingdon and the boats go to various places depending which waterway you are on.
It's not too complicated and you will never need a cab unless you leave property.
Just wait on the corner and I will pick you up!
Have a good time.
Joe

Ha ha! that would be awesome if JOe was our personal driver! Wink

Leo, here's another quick tip: if you want to get to a resort that's near a theme park (like one of the Magic Kingdom or Epcot resorts) take a bus to that theme park and walk/monorail to the resort. For example, if you take a bus to Epcot or DHS, you're just a short walk from Boardwalk, Beach club, Yacht club, and Swan/Dolphin.

Definitely check the park schedules, as busses stop running from the parks about an hour or two after the park closes. Busses run to and from Downtown Disney until 2am every night.

Hahaa...thanks again, everyone.

Trip is getting closer and paperwork is arriving in the mail. Smile Spoke with Disney rep over phone and they told me the "place to be" for dance clubs, which is what I'd be looking for since Manaquins closed, is the Atlantic House (?) on the Boardwalk.

The Boardwalk IS part of Downtown Disney isn't it? Or, are they at two separate locations?

Hey Leo! The Boardwalk is a separate part of Disney World from Downtown Disney. Boardwalk is over between Epcot and Disney's Hollywood Studios, while DTD is over by Saratoga Springs.

I've heard that the Atlantic Dance Hall can be a bit of a dud, but if you do a little research and see if there's a particular night that's more crowded during the week I'd go then.

If you're looking for "dance clubs" like you'd find in metropolitan cities, I'd consider getting a taxi to a club somewhere else in Orlando. I think you're going to find Atlantic a bit slow... wheelchair

What are your other plans for your trip? Good to hear things are coming together! awesome

Another good place to hear music is House of Blues at DTD. They have free music on the front porch quite often. I've also heard great things about the Gospel Brunch on Sundays.

While in Orlando if you have an opportunity to see Hindu Cowboys DO IT!! They are fantastic, the lead singer Joseph Martens plays solo at HOB fairly often...look for him!

Just booked a reservation at HOB's Gospel Brunch for 1:00 pm. Figuring if I'm out late the night before, I could sleep in late Wink I've been to the Gospel Brunch years ago and enjoyed it.

I looked at some videos of Jellyrolls and Atlantic Dance Hall on Youtube.com...some were good...some not so good. I'll probably head over to one or the other sometime in the evening. Does anyone kow if there is a dress code? I know...nice is better...but...casual? ...not talking shirt and tie...???

Jellyrolls doesn't have a dress code, but the cover is $10 these days and they don't take the Key to the world card (a.k.a., bring cash ;-D)

Not sure about Atlantic. I would guess there's a "no cut-offs and no bathing suits" kind of dress code there.

Oh gosh, a solo travel question and I've been absent from the forum for way too long! I'm sooo embarrassed. Don't have much to add to what others have said. WDW is not a hotbed of nightlife, unfortunately. Jellyrolls, House of Blues, Raglan Road. Have you thought about pulling together a meetup of other Disney fans who are traveling there when you are to do a monorail bar crawl? That might be fun.

Hey SF! Congrats on the LA Times mention!

Good idea to pull together a bunch of other solo (or not solo) travelers. With twitter and facebook, it's usually easy to find other people going to WDW at the same time you are.

A monarail bar crawl ---> that sounds like it could be a LOT of fun. lol Hmmm...possibly.

I know I'm asking a ton of questions...just getting anxious ---> Do the Disney properties have WiFi? For my iPod Touch? Otherwise, I might not bring it with me. ???

Leo -- Some of the deluxe resorts have wifi in the lobbies and around the pool areas. In the rooms, though, all resorts still have cable internet. You CAN bring your own router and hook it up to the cable to create your own wifi, though.

Got back home late last night. Whoa...what a trip. Aside from the MAJOR humidity, the trip was awesome.

Being that the Extra Magic Hours happened at the parks, I never made it to Pleasure Island/Boardwalk at night. It's all good. It will give me something to look forward to next year. lol I already received discounts on resort accomadations in my Email. lol

Noticed some things this go around:

1. a particular evening shift concierge at Pop Century was not the nicest and got quite snappy with an answer - but I got over that.

2. The Nightastic show had Pete's Dragon featured (Awesome!) but was amazed how many people never heard of it.

3. The Fairy Godmother and Cinderella's step sisters didn't wear those character heads anymore. Why not?

4. Monorail bar crawls could be fun if the bars stayed open longer. Almost everything closes down at 11pm at the Polynesian Resort. What? I thought this was a vacation retreat? Bars shutting down at 11pm? ???

5. Even though you might think you have comfortable sneakers...think again...blisters all over Sad

6. I repeat --> August = MAJOR humidity

7. Disney Bus Transportation - Realized the bus drop-off/pick-up locations are based on the resort type, Deluxe, Moderate, Value. Pop Century was 99.5 % located in the last section. Ugh...

Yep, those who pay more, walk less. Glad you had a good trip.

Thank you for this info, Jerseyleo! How cool to see what you thought of your trip!

I don't even remember when Lady Tremaine and the step sisters had character heads! That would have been uber creepy.
