"How about we kick off this week with a look at what's to come at Epcot? This summer, we'll be offering great tunes at the park from some of the world's best tribute bands during the Sounds Like Summer Concert Series. It all happens at the open-air America Gardens Theatre in World Showcase beginning in June, and this year, we're featuring a lineup of bands playing tribute to tunes from U2, The Bee Gees, Janet Jackson, Bon Jovi and others. Here's the schedule:

*Hotel California " A Salute to the Eagles, 6/12-18/11
*Stayin' Alive " A Tribute to the Bee Gees, 6/19-25/11
*Slippery When Wet " The Ultimate Bon Jovi Tribute, 6/26-7/2/11
*Little Queen " The Music of Heart, 7/3-9/11
*Frontiers " A Tribute to Journey, 7/10-16/11
*Karin Lawson " A Tribute to Janet Jackson, 7/17-23/11
*2U " A Tribute to U2, 7/24-30/11
Epcot concert times are 5:45 p.m., 7:00 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. However, on July 4, the times will be 5:15 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 7:45 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. And of course, entertainment is subject to change without notice. So, who are you looking forward to hearing this summer?"

Has anyone seen any of these "tribute" bands? I have to say...watching a tribute leaves me wanting to see the real thing more often than not. Will anyone make a special trip for these shows? (And 2U - do not MESS with the U2 songs...you had better do them just like Bono. K. Rant over Smile ) Also, I thought it kind of interesting that eLevation, the U2 tribute band that Raglan Road had on St Patrick's Day, isn't featured here.

I've seen a lot of them -- I'm the bassist in Little Queen. Smile Unfortunately, you're fairly justified in your opinion of tributes in general - there are a *lot* of them, since they're becoming easier to book, and many (most) have a single 'hook' - they either have someone who looks remarkable like some artist but the band is lacking, or they can play the tunes well but the imagery is wrong, or (worst of all in my opinion) they alter classic tunes that people have come to love over the years, often because they can't quite execute at the required level to suspend disbelief in the listener. Unfortunately for the tributes, a lot of this is also because most of the biggest hits that people remember are album hits, as opposed to live numbers (except Frampton, of course!) - this means that, not only do they have to reproduce the look and accuracy of the original artist, they have to deal with layers of production tracks, mastering, etc that our ears all take for granted. To be fair to WDW, however, I can tell you from first hand experience that they have some *high* standards for booking tribute acts; I don't know about former years, but I know that we had to get clearance from Heart (the artist and their management) to perform the show at Epcot; that means I had to package videos and audio recordings, bios, promo materials, etc, and send them all out to Heart's management and wait for their review and approval. To my knowledge, each band in the lineup this year has to have the same permission/release to perform their respective show. If you've seen some mediocre tributes in the past, I'm guessing that WDW, due to their size and buying power, is able to at least deliver the best the nation has to offer as far as tributes go; granted, I'm a little biased with the group I work with, but I can promise at the least that WDW's requirements very stringent this year as far as quality and accuracy goes; I'm hoping we can either arrive early or hang out a day or two after our show week and catch one of the other bands - I'm expecting them to really be great! Smile

Peace, love, etc!

p.s. any questions about tribute/road bands, what it's like working/booking with Disney, etc - let me have 'em and I'll answer as well as I'm able (and as far as I'm allowed).

p.s.s. We don't mess with the songs at all -- everything is the original album arrangement in the original key, as faithfully represented as we can do. We feel the same way you do about messing with the originals!

Sean - first of all, welcome to Grownups! When we aren't spouting off opinions in what we think is a vacuum ( um, k, that's just me maybe eek ) we are actually quite friendly!

Thank you so much for the peek behind the curtain at tribute bands. I love that you took the time to answer these questions and concerns. I have to say - it makes me want to run right out to this concert series!

Lizzy

PS - Thank you for not messing with the songs we all grew up with (well, those of us who are that age anyway) and love Smile

PPS - Just checked out the band's webpage and your bio...you are seriously from WV? Shut up! Me too! (Oh wait...manners. I did not just tell the new guy to shut up, did I?)

Thanks!! No worries! Yup, from WV. I'm in my forties - lived in Sissonville for a long while, then in Charleston. Still have family in Weston. I was in a hair band in the early 90's named Blind Gypsy out of Charleston - had a minor deal, did a LOT of roadwork. Lots of fun! Our 'Ann' (Who I'm married to) is from Ohio, but I met her at Alderson-Broaddus in Philippi, WV. There are a lot of WV folks playing music in Nashville!

I'm used to women telling me to shut up, so no worries. Smile

Peace!

Duran Duran's bassist, John Taylor, was always in the videos. Smile

Sean - I always LOVE running into a fellow WV expat! I'm in FL now, but still have lots and lots of ties - family and friends - to home. We usually get back once a year or so for a visit. I grew up in South Charleston, and attended Bethany College near Wheeling. Sadly, I wasn't too familiar with local bands or clubs...kinda grew up in a conservative environment, so most of my partying was done in the Northern Panhandle Smile

Should also add - I just joined the "40s" club

I hope folks ask lots of questions. It's great to have you here with us.

I'm not quote as pretty as John Taylor, unfortunately. Smile Thx for the welcome, all. Smile I'll answer anything I can. Smile
