Is there something you're more of a fan of than Disney?

Reading the Harry Potter thread got me wondering. Is Disney everyone's #1 obsession? If not what's #1, if so then what's #2?

I love traveling in general and I'd consider myself as much of a travel enthusiast as a Disney enthusiast. So I'd say Travel and Disney are really my #1. How about you guys?

I would have to say Disney is # 1 in my book but going to car shows with my Corvette and drag racing is # 2 & 3 in close order. But I must emphasize that I do NOT drag race the Vette wheelchair .

Mine is VERY close...between Disney and Harry Potter. I love everything Disney, but I have made more friends through HP and get CDs and everything...but then Broadway is a close third!

I think if I were pressed to choose, Disney would be number 1. But sports, specifically hockey, specifically my beloved Buffalo Sabres, is number 2. Actually let's call it 1A and 1B.

I love to travel too, so that would be number 2. When I'm not travelling I'm an armchair traveller; that is, I like to read and learn all I can about different places.

I love all things Disney, not just the theme parks. It's funny though that other entertainment entities do not thrill me much at all. I'm not a big moviegoer or tv watcher, other than Disney.

Great question -- you're really making me think!

I'll say travel is my #2 as well. I love exploring new places and going back to the ones I enjoy. But because money doesn't grow on trees, I'll add cooking and baking as #2A. Trying new recipes and seeing what works is like "exploring" as well.

Caitie -- What do you mean by CD's? I love Harry Potter, too!

Imagineer -- Hockey's one of my favorites! Nice long season, too!

Vettelover -- What car do you drag race??

Well, lots actually. Travel in general being #1. #2 is probably photography. But in terms of "fannish" things, I'd have to say Battlestar Galactica (the remake, not the original). Best. TV. Series. Ever.

Admin: to answer your question I have "retired"from drag racing as of this year. I used to work on a professional drag racing team on a car thar was purposely built from the ground up for one purpose, and that was to go FAST!! I would bore everyone with all the technical data but to give you an idea, it was powered by a 1,830 HP motor (not a misprint 1,830HP) and would cover the quarter mile from standing start to 220MPH in 6.3 seconds. Also needed 2 parachutes to slow it down. PS I did NOT do the driving I only worked for the race team. But it was a BLAST!!! awesome

Who are some of your favorite photographers, SF?

Vettelover -- That does sound like a blast! How long has the team been up and running? And how many other drag racing teams are there?

I'd have to say that travel and photography are two of my loves as well. I also love reading, though I haven't checked in to our Goodreads group in a while!!

There is thing genre of music called wizard rock - music about the series. Some of the bigger bands are Harry and the Potters (who are good live, but their CDs are eh), Draco and the Malfoys, The Remus Lupins, and The Whomping Willows (with songs from the perspective of the tree). There is a lot of humor and commentary on social issues. Some of it sucks, but a lot of it is really good. There are a lot of smaller bands too that are fantastic.

They just had Wrockstock III a few weeks ago (I couldn't go Sad ) and everyone said it was a lot of fun. I have met some of the coolest people from it!

I will have to say I reading is up there on my list too...

While Disney is up there, Broadway beats it for me, as does my absolute obsession with Lost.

I never knew there was such a HP subculture -- there are even bands?! Awesome!

Greebil -- you should definitely start Dobby and the House Elves if there isn't one already. Those could be some hilarious songs!

Lost seems a bit too ephemeral to trump Disney. It will eventually end, but Disney is forever!

bali, I don't necessarily have any favorite photographers, I just meant I enjoy photography. I certainly do appreciate looking at professional-caliber photos, but I don't always remember the names of the photographers who took them. Shame on me, I know.

I wonder if DW would like to hear some of that. She's a big HP fan.

True, but while it's on, it occupies an AWFUL lot of my time!

There actually IS a Dobby and the House Elves -they are electronica...and not very good - but that is one reason it is fun - there is room for all sorts of genres and people get a lot better pretty quickly.

There is one site (http://wizrocklopedia.com/) that has a LOT of information including bands broken down by location or name. The sites all have music on the pages (usually MySpace) that you can listen to.

Here are some of the better ones

Creevey Crisis
- Russ does harder rock

Draco and the Malfoys - Brian and Brandon do a lot of funny songs

Ministry of Magic - They do dance music - the "boy band" of wizard rock. One member has the best voice.

The Moaning Myrtles- Lauren and Nina do a lot of comedy (I mean their character is dead..) and some great harmonies.

The Mudbloods - just retired, but has great pop music - both HP and not

The Remus Lupins - Alex writes mostly pop songs with rock influence and is one of the biggest bands out there. He and some guys from the Ministry of Magic have started recording a few songs calling themselves The Oceanic 6...guess what they sing about?

RiddleTM - Sisters from the UK. (For Jo is their best song)

Tonks & the Aurors - Steph is the Bruce Springsteen of wizard rock

If you are interested in anything else, send me a PM and I can send you stuff give you more info ect. I don't want to take over the entire thread with my dorkiness ;-/

Caitie -- where are the bands located? Are they all British, or are most American?

I love hearing about this whole subculture I knew nothing about! I watched the main HP websites pretty closely while the books were coming out, but had no idea about the bands.

"Ministry of Magic" sounds like "Ministry of Sound" -- that London nightclub.

Also interesting that the bands do songs related to their title character! I can't think of any other group of bands that do that.

Hi,

Not only am I sleepless, having been up since 1:32 am EST, but it is 45°F (6.3°C) right now and raining.

I do a lot of reading--about 60 books this year alone both fiction and nonfiction--because it is cheaper to go to the public library than to travel, especially since I have so much credit card debt.

I've been considering this for much the same reasons. Do you find that it's pretty easy to get books you actually want at the library or do you find something to read out of what they have?

Hi, dsoup!

A lot of times I find something to read from what my local library has, but because it is part of a six-branch county library system (including the Camden County, NJ College Library), I have access to more books than do a lot of people. If a particular book I want is unavailable, I go to Amazon.com, look up its ten- or thirteen-digit international standard book number (ISBN), and copy-and-paste the number into my request on the library system's website.

Good point. The Northeast probably has a superior public library system than we do down here.

Is the Camden County system better than Mercer County? We have several libraries, but they still seem to not have much...I am working my way (very slowly) through the 1001 Books You must Read Before You Die and they don't have several of them.

Hi Caitie,

I'm not familiar with the Mercer County system, so I couldn't tell you whether or not it's inferior to that of Camden County. Have you tried interlibrary loan to get the books you want? I did a request for a book challenge that I have through Delphi Forums' Booklovers General Fiction forum, to read a holiday-themed book for Christmas. I am still waiting for the historical fiction *Then Came Christmas* by Randy Lee Eickhoff.

Yeah i do what they have available....I just wish they connected with other counties systems too. The library I had in Ohio was awesome - you could connect to every library in the state!

What does everyone like to read? I basically will read anything other than genre fiction (romance, sci fi, ect). I like fantasy, YA, general fiction, and literary fiction...but I will try anything. I am on a Neil Gaiman kick right now and want to start reading some nonfiction.

After Lost Symbol, I started in on some nonfiction. Now reading AJ Jacobs' Guinea Pig Diaries. I tend to vacillate between romance novels and nonfiction. I have two very different personalities, apparently!

We have that one but haven't read it yet...I LOVED his other books though!
