Tiara Tips?

I have no idea if I'm putting it in the right category or not, so if it's in the wrong one, sorry.

Has anyone here ever worn a tiara to Disney World? I need some advice in that regard. I don't know exactly when my next trip to WDW is, but for my next trip (whenever it may be), I want to channel my "Inner Princess" and wear a tiara while I'm in the Magic Kingdom. I haven't done it before (not even as a kid), but I thought I'd try it, just for a change of pace. I've read on several online sources that there are plenty of adult women who wear tiaras to Disney World. But that's not my issue. My issue is this. My hair is very short, and *very* thin, and I'm kind of afraid I'll wind up choosing one that won't look good on me at all. I've tried on some toy tiaras in the past, but I've found I looked hideous in them. I don't think a tiara comb would do much good in my case, since my hair is too short to put it in any sort of updo (or even a ponytail, period). Also, does anyone know a good way for keeping it on while on Space, Splash, and Big Thunder Mountain?

You might try the tiara headband route! Much easier to keep on short hair plus you can pin it in easier. I have seen many women wearing tiaras at WDW. I think Norway at Epcot even sells some really pretty ones in their shop.

There was a young woman wearing a tiara on our last trip to DLP, we met her on ToT, she took it off for that and put it back on after the ride. Hers didn't have a comb or anything but she had long hair. I might get myself and the girls one each to wear in some fun shots at our family photoshoot with Randy Chapman.

Always let your conscience be your guide....

DLP - 11 trips between 2006-2013
WDW - 4 trips between 1988-2011,
next Florida trip Oct/Nov 2014 - Magnificent Mega Month of Making Magical Memories - pre-trip report

I wore one at MK that my hubs had got me in my Princess package. My problem was on the big rides with it. The others, I simply took it off and held it during the ride and then back on. The big rides, like Space Mountain, I find in order to "hold on" Smile, I was squishing the tiara and bending it. So I didn't wear it in the other parks as I didn't want to ruin it. Now granted, hubs bought me a pretty big one.

I have really thick hair, so I can't help with the other.

Thanks for the tips. I'm asking for any and all help you gals can give me, because outside of a cheap, plastic toy tiara, I have never worn one in my entire life.

Is it possible for you to pull your bangs or front hair back and pin them up like a little poof? That would give a comb one something to hold on to maybe? I've never worn one but seems like that could help... Maybe?

Whoo hoo! Now you're talkin' my language! My girls and I have a whole tiara collection. I even subscribe to a "tiara a day" newsletter. laugh

I have fairly short and thin hair, in addition I wear glasses, so I understand all about how hard it can be finding the right tiara to channel your inner royalty. Because my hair is both thin and fine, I have a great deal of trouble keeping a tiara on my head. Combs don't really work for me, neither do barrettes.

How much does a costume tiara cost? They can range wildly based on the materials used from the $1 store plastic deals to a $2,000,000 sparkler from Tiffanys. I'm going assume that you're not interested in a "good" tiara, and just want something fun to wear to the parks during vacation that won't break the bank. Most of our tiara have cost between $20-$30 and were bought down at the local mall. Great inexpensive tiara shopping stores in the US: Claires, Icing, Charming Charlies. Charming Charlies is my favorite as they often have a wider selection all year round, not just at prom season.

muchlove The pictures below are of my favorite tiara, my Daisy Bandeau. It was bought at Charming Charlies for about $10. Let me explain why I love this piece.

1) It's small and adds sparkle, but doesn't scream "Look at me I'm wearing a tiara!" For a woman of my age, it's subtle enough that I don't look like an idiot. The bandeau is no more than 1.5" high in the center and tapers down on the sides. It's a simple classic design that goes with anything I want to wear, and it's easy to find accent jewelry to compliment it.

2) The side wires of the daisy bandeau are wrapped with another wire (see detail picture) that helps it to grip my hair. Even if it's only on my head for a second or two that wrap wire is grabbing into my hair and helping the piece not to slip around.

3) The other design perfection in this piece is that the ends have ball caps on them. This allows me to sit the bandeau on my head in more than one way. I can wear this piece like a headband, or more at the front/top of my head as a proper tiara. The ball caps are totally comfortable and don't dig into my scalp at an odd angle. They also don't interfere with my glasses.

4) The flexibility of the wire band allowed me to shape the piece to my head. Not all tiaras and heads are created equally, and if you want to be comfortable wearing yours, it's best to find one that you can bend slightly to fit your head vs. the factory norm.

When you head out to go tiara shopping, plan on spending some time. Try them on, look at a bunch. They all have different personalities. My girls like different things than I do in the pattern design, but we all agree on comfort points. Let me know if you have questions! I'm always happy to talk tiaras.

Kristen - that is so cute! I have never in my life even contemplated wearing a tiara - (tomboy, short thin hair (and grey to boot now!) - but I may change my mind if I ever see one like this.

Nope, my hair is definitely too short for that.

Kristen, thanks for the pics, and the info. Maybe next time I'm down at my local mall, I'll check out Claire's. I've never heard of Charming Charlies.

I suggest going to the shop on Main Street (I think it's the glass blowing shop?? I should know the answer to this...) that sells tiaras and trying them on!! They have all shapes and sizes (and prices!). I found a couple of cute ones that would fit well with a ponytail (my go-to Disney hair do!). I am looking forward to getting it when I go down for Princess Half weekend!

Yep! We have an Arribas Brothers Tiara in our collection too. They also have a shop in Epcot in Germany. muchlove

Well, here are a couple I bought at Claire's that I liked (didn't know which one I liked better, so I got 'em both), and thankfully didn't look bad on me (my mom was with me, so it helped to have a second opinion; mein sister wouldn't have been a good source for *that*)

This is more of a headband, with the decoration on one side, only

Here's the other one. Of course, I put it on as a headband, and found it was more comfortable that way. The combs had a good grip, which surprised me. This was the one I asked my mom's opinion about. She didn't see how the first one looked on me.

Also, one more question: what is the best way to pack a tiara for a plane trip without it getting crushed/damaged/etc? I don't necessarily want to wear them (I'll probably wind up taking both with me) to the airport or on the plane (self-consciousness issues), but I don't necessarily want to put them in my suitcase, either.

I usually roll a pair of jeans and them wrap them around that.
