Timeshare Resales

Does anyone know anything about timeshare resales??? I was just looking around today and saw some AK timeshare resales for as low as $5000. I know an annual fee would still be charged, correct?? Also, how many points on average are needed for a week each year?

I can't tell you anything about Disney timeshare resales - we own elsewhere - but yes, even with a resale you will have to pay an annual maintenance fee.

The thing you need to realize is... where you buy is your first choice. Meaning thats always your first choice. Say your home is AKL, and you want Boardwalk... you would book your vacation at AKL 11 months out, and then at the 7 month mark... try for Boardwalk.

Here... ill post the point chart for ya for each of the different places:

Bay Lake Tower
Animal Kingdom Lodge
Beach Club
Boardwalk
Old Key West
Saratoga Springs
Wilderness Lodge

Those are all the resorts at Disney World. Theres a lot more to choose from, but that will get you started. Also... these are the 2012 points. Let me know if they work. This should at least get you started on how many points you would want and if you would like to stay elsewhere... how much it would cost, so you can put that into your points as well.

We have 210 points just an FYI @ AKL.

And about resale... My Dad is looking at trying to get some more points, but is debating about doing resale and ill try to remember to ask him where he was looking at because its a pretty reliable place.

Now... here is a kicker. Disney doesnt like resellers. They are limiting some things when it comes to that... off the top of my head... I cant remember exactly... but there will be restrictions to what you can do.

If I remember correctly I believe resale members can use their points ONLY at DVC Resorts. They're NOT allowed to exchange them for the Cruise, Adventures by Disney, the Conierge Collection or RCI trades.

We started out with 160 points. We've added on another 25 since then. I do a lot of banking and borrowing every year. We really need to add on some more points because we usually get a 2 bedroom.

How many points you need for a week a year depends on what type of room you want, and what time of year you go. The point system works similar to how hotel rates go. Busy times of year the rooms cost more points, and the bigger the room you get the more points it will cost.

In January a week at an AKL Deluxe Studio (value category) would cost you 69 points
In January a week at an AKL Deluxe Studio (concierge category) would cost you 125 points
Over Christmas a week at an AKL Deluxe Studio (value category) would cost you 118 points
Over Christmas a week at an AKL Deluxe Studio (concierge category) would cost you 211 points
In January a week at an AKL 2 Bedroom Villa (value category) would cost you 185 points
In January a week at an AKL 2 Bedroom Villa (concierge category) would cost you 343 points

It all depends on how you would like to travel. The joy of the DVC system is it's flexibility. If you have 200 points in your account, you could do one week in a 2 bedroom value, or you could do one week in January in a Value Studio and an additional second week at Christmas in a value studio. You can make your points work however you want to when you want to use them. With DVC you're not locked into one vacation every year forever.

Does that make sense emmaanne?

I found this... http://www.mousesavers.com/dvc.html#resale

It basically says that you can only use your points at DVC resorts, RCI exchanges, Club Cordial, and Club Intrawest.

My main question now is with the RCI exchanges, how do those work?? Does anyone do RCI exchanges here?

I just want to know that if we wanted to use our DVC membership at somewhere other than Disney World we could.

Emmaanne, I believe that Disney recently changed it so that resales cannot use their points for RCI transfers, only points purchased directly from Disney is eligible for use at RCI locations. Now I could be wrong but if I were you I would certainly check it out further.

i have sent my mother to aruba 3 times with rci exchanges it is easy. there are fees that you have to pay like i think $95 to book the trip, and then a daily room charge which i believe varies from place to place aruba is like $6.50 a day i still don't know what it is for. but anyway i think it ends up costing her like $150.00 for a week. not every place charges the same some don't charge at all i don't think, just the booking fee

I do alot of RCI exchanging but not with my DVC points. They are almost too valuable to give to RCI.
The general advice from the consensus of DVC owners is that DVC points are best used for DVC period.
If you want to trade in RCI there are certain many cheaper alternatives for that like Wynham points which can be had for $1 on ebay many times.

I actually use my other timeshares to trade into DVC. It's quite reasonable to trade in if you own the right traders.
If you only want to do an occasional trade of your DVC points then maybe it's not worth owning more than just DVC but IMO owning a biennial or triennial regular resort would give you enough points to go around the world. Then maybe buy a smaller DVC contract and bank and borrow your points so you don't overbuy, yet can still take a DVC vacation at least every other year in a bigger unit, or every year in a studio.

If you'd like a points calculator Daddio's site has a nice one which you can put in the dates that you would normally travel and get an idea of how many points it would cost you. Here's the link: http://www.dvcbyrequest.com/ and select the points calculator.

Good luck in your decision.

Oh and AKV is fairly easy to trade into without having to buy your points there. It's a huge resort. I've traded in there 3 times within DVC and I own in SSR.
