Trip Reports - My two cents worth...

Just wondering what you look for in a trip report.

Let me say up front, I've never done one, never will. I see people posting way too much info about stuff we shouldn't care about in trip reports and that pretty much burns me out. I am NOT saying this is bad or shouldn't be done, just that its not my thing.

I usually just post individual items that I find interesting.

I've always wanted to ask people their true feelings about trip reports, and feel I know this bunch well enough now to ask.

From my perspective it can entirely depend. Generally I like to see highlights, but some people who write well can keep me entertained. For example, Unbalanced Libra's trip report from the Poly was much longer than I'll usually read, however she did a good job of keeping up the "suspense" by alluding to how crappy it was going to turn. Her relative inexperience at WDW also made it fun to read. That being said, generally I'm interested in what was interesting more than a diary, but I like the diary style sometimes too.

I know I'm somewhat in the minority on that as well, as many people who are "jonesing" for a visit often want to read every detail to help them plan and prep, as well as enjoy vicariously. I think different people like them for different reasons, and I suspect that most of the time they are written as much for the writers enjoyment as the reader.

I think you are right. I think writing a report now and then is a good thing, especially if it helps you to remember key points and things you did.

There ARE people however, who imagine themselves as the second coming of Ernest Hemingway and spend hours a day while AT WDW writing in painful detail every aspect of not only their Disney life, but their personal life as well.

I really don't CARE if their significant other's feet hurt after walking around Epcot or a bird flew by while they were on the bus. laugh I wanna know the GOOD stuff!

I feel that the more detail the better. I just usually skim if it's too detailed, but I like to get ideas from them. Something that might be routine for one person might be a revelation to another.

Yeah, I think doing one would be a big plus just so I could remember what all I did!

I'll add to my "pictures" comment that I go through "trip report phases." There are times--often when I can't get to WDW for a long time--when I really enjoy reading others' trip reports. Reading the detail of their days makes me feel like i'm there, which is a nice little break during my usually busy days.

I actually used to print out trip reports and read them on my commute (I rode a ferry) to and from work. It was a great way to pass the time and get excited about upcoming trips. On the other hand, I go through phases where I really don't need all the detail, and just want to see highlights and photos. It just depends on the mood.

Personally, though, I've only done one or two real trip reports. They're fun to read over after the fact, but writing them is a pain in the bum.

I'm a big fan of trip reports. First, I like to live vicariously through other people's travels. Second, I often find little helpful nuggets of information in them that help me plan my trips. If it's too long, I just skim past the sections I find less interesting and focus on the parts that are of interest to me.

My point exactly! You can skip the detail if you don't want it, but you can't add it if it's not there!

Thanks for this info, everyone (and to you MT for starting the thread). We never did finish our September trip report, so I think I'm going to go a little less detailed this time. I'd like to get all the days documented in some way, but it might be a bit more broad.

I agree with Bali, the more pictures, the better! biggrin

But I also love random observations, strategies and most importantly knowing what people ATE! I love hearing about food!

I like the food pictures as well--though that sounds kind of disgusting to say!

Also, I like to hear about the funny, inexpected, or wonderful things that happen so often on Disney trips. Especially when they involve a cast member going out of their way to make your trip better.

I love them. If they get too carried away, can skim. I love the pictures!

For me, I write them for personal reasons, which is why I post them to my blog. My rip reports ARE a diary of sorts for me wink

I love to read trip reports--especially long ones. I find them relaxing.

But writing trip reports is another story...
