From what I've heard from those that have done it, you just mention at check in that you want to do it. They will see if there are any openings any of the mornings of your stay and put you in if there is.
I don't think anyone gets preferential treatment. From what I gather it's more of a first come first serve type of thing.

Ditto on that. Just let them know as soon as you check in as it fills up fast.
