Wonderland Katie's exhaustive pre-trip report!!

I am running out of other things to do to satisfy my daily Disney fix, so I figured I'd try my hand at a pre-trip report! yay

We will be staying at All Star Music from May 7th thru the 14th, which is actually the longest Disney trip I've made! Since we won't be at the hotel for more than sleeping, the occasional nap, and the sparse swim, we chose the resort based simply on cost. We also have the basic DDP so we don't have to worry about how much everything costs when we get there.

Now, I unfortunately did not do an 'Introduce Yourself' topic when I joined this forum, so I'll just give anyone who cares a little bio on myself and the other people I am traveling with:

-I am 25 years old and an operating room nurse. I love my job, but I am SO looking forward to a vacation! I am passionate about all things Disney (which should be obvious since I'm on this forum), the Beatles, and traveling to any and all places in general. This will be my 6th trip to WDW, the last time being on our honeymoon in August 2009.
-DH is Matt, 29, IT specialist. He is probably the least Disney fanatic in the group, but I don't hold that against him. His preferred vacation style is to do a lot of relaxing, while the rest of us like to go, go, go! He will probably be heading back with DS to take a nap most afternoons. He also isn't a fan of roller coasters so our FPs are made with that in mind... I will be riding single rider for all of those!
-DS is Desmond, and he turns 2 at the end of April. He really loves the 'Fab 5' and Monsters University characters! I don't know how well he will like meeting the characters, but we will try to ease into it slowly. He loves all the rides he has ridden at our local zoo and he really isn't afraid if much, so I'm hoping he will enjoy a lot of things at WDW!
-We are also traveling with my mom and dad (Rita and Mike), and my sister and her boyfriend (Ellen and Luke). They are both 22 and celebrating their college graduation with this trip! We all plan on spending the majority of our time together, seeing as it's a family trip, but I'm sure Ellen and Luke will want to do their own thing every so often, which is totally understandable.

Ok, now that that's all out of the way, we can get to the day by day! clapping

Day 1: Arriving at MCO at 1:40pm and hopping on the Magical Express! After checking in at ASMu, we will be headed to the Boardwalk for some strolling and an earlyish ADR at Kouzzina. This was hubby's choice as he's had a crush on Cat Cora since he first watched Iron Chef America wink After dinner we will probably head to DTD for some window shopping.

Day 2: Magic Kingdom at rope drop! We've never been at rope drop before, so can someone let me know how far down Main Street can you get before opening? I see people talking about grabbing coffee and strolling thru shops but I wasn't sure if that was before official opening or not. We are planning on taking the train around to Fantasyland station because I know DS would love that, but I will be a little hesitant if I know that all the people waiting down Main St are headed for the Dwarves Mine Train and the line will be super long by the time we get to it... (We can ride the train on our other MK day if that is the case) Anyway, we have FP for Peter Pan, BTMRR, and Splash Mtn for morning/early afternoon. We are planning on eating lunch in the Frontierland area, so probably at Columbia Harbour House or Peco's Bills. After Splash Mtn we will play it by ear, but probably go back to the hotel for swimming/nap time and then back to MK for a 6:30 ADR at Crystal Palace... After that it's just more fun (and a Dole Whip!) before Wishes and bedtime. Desmond usually has a hard time going to bed early so we're hoping he'll be ok with later nights in the parks, but we'll just have to see how it goes!

Day 3: Epcot at rope drop for Test Track! Ellen and Luke want to design their cars so they preferred to not have a FP for this one. We have FP for Spaceship Earth and Nemo & Friends right before our ADR at Coral Reef. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about this one, but I'm pretty excited for the atmosphere! After lunch it's a FP for Soarin', then I volunteered to go back to take a nap with Desmond while the others eat and drink their way around the Flower and Garden Festival booths (I am sure they'll have a blast). We have a 6:30 ADR at Beirgarten (Matt and Dad's request), but I hope Desmond will like the oompa band! Epcot has EMH until 11 this night, so does anyone know if the festival booths will stay open that late??

Day 4: Hoping to make DHS at rope drop for a stand-by of TSMM (none of us have ever been on this one!) and then I'll ride ToT and RnRC single rider before it's back to TSMM for a FP, then FP for Star Tours. We're hoping to catch Disney Jr. On stage as Desi loves all of those shows. We are really up in the air for QS for both lunch and dinner, so any suggestions are appreciated! Then Matt will be headed for a nap with Des while the rest of us check out the stage/stunt shows. FP for GMR later on, then hopefully getting into Fantasmic (it was full during our honeymoon so we haven't seen it for nearly 10 years). If, for some strange reason, we don't like TSMM, we will try to switch the FP to Fantasmic so at least we have seats!

Day 5: We have a pre-park opening ADR at Tusker House for the character breakfast at 8:25, then exploring AK for the day, with FP at the safari, Dinosaur, and Kali Rapids (I'll be doing single rider for Everest). Desmond loves our zoo at home so I'm thinking he will really enjoy this park. We have a super late ADR at Kona Cafe at 8:30; I figured that would work best if we stay at AK until park closing, and then maybe see the fireworks from the Poly beach after dinner? Does anyone think we could pull that off? I don't know where Kona is in regard to the resort or beach. Also, does anyone know if I'll be able to get sushi for my entree on the DP?

Day 6: Today we are headed to Islands of Adventure, mainly for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter! My sister and I are HUGE HP fans, and actually I visited this park a year ago for a day trip with my friend who lived in Florida, so I'm excited to go again and drink some pumpkin juice! I don't think we'll spend all day at IoA, so we'll probably come back and do some shopping at Downtown Disney, and probably just grab dinner at the hotel food court since we have more QS meals to use up.

Day 7: Back to MK today with FP for Jungle Cruise, Haunted Mansion, and Buzz Lightyear. We are hoping to snag an elusive lunch FP for BOG, but it's not looking too promising so we'll probably eat whichever place we didn't do last time. We will be taking the boat over to WL for dinner at Whispering Canyon.

Day 8: Departing day sad our plane leaves around 2:30 so I have a feeling we won't have time to do much but pack in the morning, but maybe we can sneak in an hour at DTD if we're lucky!

I forgot to mention that I bought a shirt with 9 different 'princesses' on it, so I plan on taking that around with me and getting it signed by all of them! Also, I'm excited for a couple of my outfits, I have a bunch of little mermaid stuff I'm going to wear one day biggrin I'm kind of bummed because I was hoping to get my Disney themed half-sleeve tattoo started before I go, but I don't think I'll be able to. I might just have to settle for a henna version of Pocahontas' armband just before I leave for the trip wink

Thanks for reading my pre-trip report!! I hope I didn't bore you too much, and if I did, you should have stopped reading sooner wink

Hubby and I on vacation to Myrtle Beach last year

laugh sorry I couldn't resist, he just did this the other day and it cracks me up

a typical morning for us, watching Monster's University wink

Wow...am tired just reading it. LOL No really sounds like a blast. I will say I have done the MK rope drop several times now and for me it is always a must. However, the opening doesn't let you inside the park. unless you had ADR for an early breakfast somewhere. And if you are going to see this (and I say you should) you must make sure you are there at least 1/2 before the scheduled opening. Meaning if MK is scheduled to open at 9 the opening will start around 8:45.

Sounds awesome, I want to do rope drop at MK this trip also, never done it either.

I was in Myrtle Saturday. How close are you to there?

Sounds like an awesome trip! And your son is adorable! I can't wait to hear how this trip goes for you! We're planning on taking DD for her first trip (Dec 2015) when she's 2 and I've been nervous about how she will handle it. We'll have my in-laws and DH's brother with us as well so very similar to your trip! Have a great time!

Sounds like so much fun!
A little BOG lunch time tip- even if you don't get a fastpass for it, if you really wanna eat there, just go get in line about a half hour or so before they open the doors. That's what we did last time we went, and it worked out great. It was definitely a must-do for us though, so we were totally fine with waiting. Although, when we walked out the line was sooooo long- don't know if we would have been okay with that.

Sounds great, Katie! At MK rope drop, you'll have to make a decision about seeing the opening show and being near the front of the rope. The show is cute, but you really have to stand back to get any kind of good angle on it. For me, I want to be as close to that rope as possible to be part of the early crowd. We usually head toward Fantasyland first which sounds like what you're doing.

If you ever do a rope drop and try to head to Adventureland or Frontierland, make sure it is a regular day because those sections of the park don't usually open for MEMH. I forgot to double check that last time and it cost us some valuable morning time.

Good call on doing Test Track single rider and doing FP for Soarin'. Honestly, I think the Test Track queue is more interesting, so even as a group, I'd prefer to wait there than at Soarin'.

Absolutely! That's what tipped the scales for us on where to use our FP, too.

Sounds like a great trip Katie mickey

For a QS option at DHS, we are headed to the Sunset Ranch Market on Sunset Blvd. This market includes Catalina Eddie's, Fairfax Fare, Rosie's All American Cafe, Anaheim Produce, and Toluca Turkey Legs. I haven't been there so I can't offer a food review, but it has so many options in one spot that it seems to be a good choice for my group!

I wanted to visit Charleston on our trip but no one else was game, but the history sounds cool to me! I've been to Savannah and Tybee Island, so you're kind of in the middle lol, but that whole area of the coast seems so nice!

Sounds like a great vacation plan! As far as QS as HS, if you like chicken sandwiches, the freshest one that we have found is at the Studio Catering Co., which is right past TSMM. It is listed as a Buffalo chicken but you can get it plain too. It is the best chicken sandwich we've found in HS.

Also, as far as Fantasmic! if you want to see it, I highly recommend using your FP+ and not waiting until the day of to switch it to FP+. Most likely it will not be available the day of to choose. We are AP holders, but we don't ever stay at a Disney resort, so we were one of the last people to get a magic band and access to FP+. We were at HS for one night in Jan, Feb and Mar(w/o FP+ options) and Fantasmic! was completely full an hour, or more before show time, each show, each night, each month!
We have never had a problem before FP+ getting into Fantasmic! so we asked at Guest Relations what the new FP+ seating policy is concerning Fantasmic! The stadium holds 6000 people and 4500 seats are now dedicated to FP+. The other seats go first to people that chose a Fantasmic! dining package, and then whatever few seats are left, that goes to standby. They told us if we want to see Fantasmic! it will be virtually impossible now without FP+.

Happy to help Katie biggrin I know how frustrating it can be for us to miss out on something during one of our Disney trips, and we get to go to WDW a few days every month. I think my head would actually explode on Main Street USA if it was our once in a lifetime vacation and we didn't get to do the major things we wanted to do!

Well that's a real bummer! So unless you're ok with an hour or more wait, you basically have to choose whether you want to do TSMM or Fantasmic on any given day since their both Tier 1 attractions.

Well after thinking some things over, I think the day we go to IoA and then downtown Disney, I'm going to suggest a boat ride over the PORS to use a QS credit at the Riverside Mill and get one of those famous magic cookie bars awesome

Charleston is amazing! And if you ever make it here, I would love to be a tour guide! The homes and gardens downtown are beautiful, the plantations, exquisite and the little towns are just lovely all around! I also know all the best places to eat! laugh

really seems like they either have a lot of kinks to work out, or they are working this to their advantage. Oh you want a guaranteed seat? Book and stay with us and you will get it. AHHHH Disney.... I wish it had been my idea... eek
