Worrying About the Weather - What Are Your Great Tips & Tricks for the Rain!?

I'm starting to get a little more than worried about the weather in Florida right now. I know I still have 14 days to go and the forecasts aren't accurate for my trip at the moment, but there are some tropical storm formations that I have my eye on. They wouldn't be a direct hit to Florida, but we could very well feel those outer reaches.

So now I'm starting to think that I really need to pack for rain. Brilliant. sarcastic

My rain coat has lost it's waterproofing and is no good what so ever in a downpour. I may have to break down and go with the ponchos. I hated them as a child and don't really think I'll care all that much to be wearing one as an adult.

How should I pack for this? How good are the ponchos at keeping you dry? Should I take extra clothes to change into if I can't stand being wet? Umbrellas? Hats? Should I wear tennis shoes or flip flops? Ugh... I'm not sure I hav ethe wardrobe for this!

What do you do when it rains?

I prefer the ponchos over the umbrellas. I have been in other parks and umbrellas can blow one way or the other they can act like sails. They get in peoples face. I can tell you I don't like dodging umbrellas, getting them in my face or trying to see around them while you are walking.

Some suggest you get ponchos at the dollar tree before you go. You will be so disappointed. They are cheap, short, flimsy and cling to you. I personally prefer ponchos. I never buy them ahead of time though. Why lug them around if you dont need them.

well we just spent ten days there in the rain all i can say is bring extra socks and shoes, the only thing that bothered me was haveing to slosh around in whet shoes and socks. we had a dryer so were able to dry then every day but it would have been nice to change them in the middle of the day. The poncho's we got from the mouse were fine for keeping us dry except the feet. Hats are also helpful to keep the water out of your face. Another thing is putting plastic bags over your socks, you will look silly but it will keep the socks dry if you can't get back to change

I agree with the others. The ponchos work great. We have never been soaked as far as our clothes go. Now your feet are a different story. For that reason I wear flip flops on rainy days. I can not stand wet socks or squishy shoes. I also agree I do not care for umbrellas when in a crowd. I would dress the same way you would if you had to be out and about at home on a rainy day.

Good News...the rainy season has officially ended according to the calendar. This whole year has been exceptionally wet. We brave Disney all the time in the rain. The ponchos that they sell at the park are just fine. They will keep you dry except for your feet. I hate flip flops in the rain, it's hard to walk in them. I also hate wet tennis shoes. I take extra clothes and shoes, but we have to drive home.
The forecast is great for the next week, 0% chance of rain through the weekend! The weather is finally cooling down and the humidity is gone, hopefully until the spring. It has been absolutely gorgeous the past few days, mid 80s, sunny and low humidity. Hope it stays this way for you! If this keeps up, and it should for October, you shouldn't have to worry about too much rain, but I'd still be prepared for a shower or two. October is usually dry, but we've had above average rain all year.

redwing shoes used to make socks that are waterproof I dont know if they still do but I would think someone does. I used to work in wet conditions down into -0 and lower and they helped me allot. I dont have anymore maybe time to invest in some they feel a bit weird on your feet at first but you get used to it and forget about it after about 10 min. They are black so you may want to put white socks over them so you dont look silly. I also wouldnt wear them unless you needed to or your feet will sweat like crazy but once your shoes are wet they help cool your feet so they stay dry.

Kristen I would say with the extra rain lately get a waterproof jacket at Dicks sporting goods they have some nice ones that make good windbreakers/jacket as well and leave the old jacket at home you kill two birds with one stone. maybe get some waterproofing spray and spray your shoes before you go as well.

I am brainstorming on this one but maybe an absorber chamois that you get to use on a car you can keep it in your jacket and if you get wet you can use it to towel off wring it out and let the next person use it put it back in a ziplock baggie in your jacket pocket and you will warm up faster.

My idea sucks. We usually chill at AKL. But it hasnt really rained... liked POORED while we were there. One time it was a light sprinkle and we kept on. But if it was raining... I wouldnt go to the parks... id just go to either DTD or relax at AKL.

Since we usually go in the fall (non-rainy season), we've rarely had serious problems with rain. Back in 2005 we missed a park day due to a hurricane, but that just meant that our preplanned "off" day became the hurricane day. Last year I ran into a brief rain shower, but I ducked under cover for half an hour or so till it passed. And we always have at least one "off" day planned, so if heavy rain is in the forecast we can rearrange our schedule so the rainy day is the "off" day.

I also bring rain ponchos along just in case - I get both the flimsy dollar store type that you wear once and toss, and also some slightly more durable ponchos in case there's prolonged showers.

As for shoes, I can't walk around the parks in flip-flops - my feet slip around in wet flip-flops, so wearing them in the rain would probably mean landing on my tushie more than once. I'll wear my good sneakers and if they get wet, they get wet.

The weather forecast is fabulous for the weekend and beginning of next week. It's supposed to be windy, but like 20% chance of rain early next week. It has been gorgeous, October and March are the reasons I love Florida, well all winter long actually, since I HATE the snow and cold. It should be dry, comfortable and sunny for you crossfingers

This will be the third year I'm going the week before Thanksgiving. The last two years the weather was perfect. The only time it rained was during the night. There were a couple of nights it got cold but the days were always nice. Hoping for a three-peat.

Let's all hope that December is unseasonably warm this year. I could use a warm December like 2011.

We always go at the end of November as well and I think in the past 4 years we only had one day of rain and the temperatures are awesome... The only bad part is coming back to cold Ohio afterwards... But with as warm a winter as we had last year there wasn't much of a temperature change which was nice

Jan and I were at the World in all kinds of weather conditions.\, hot, cold, wet or dry. It never mattered to us because with our romance we could make our own weather.

What a great quote. I, too, am always touched by your pictures and stories of Jan.

I think that there are many of us that are regularly touched when you share your stories of your travels with Jan. The love that you have for her always comes through and makes me smile. Then there's always the perfect picture, like this one. Joe, you know how to know how to warm my jaded heart.

I saw a lot of complaints about wet feet... I work outside in all conditions.... Because it rains I have an entire getup to keep myself dry throughout the day... Waterproof pants are available... And they are amazing, and warm, and comfortable... And they really just look like you're wearing swish pants... Then of course the rain jacket... Preferably with long sleeves to keep your hands dry... and of course a hood to keep your head dry.... And my most favorite beloved pieces of clothing.... My MUCKS!! They keep your feet soooo dry and warm... They are amazing and I will definitely be bringing mine along just in case it rains! They aren't the most attractive things in the world.. But it's comfort over beauty for me...

Otherwise i'd go pancho over umbrella.

There are ponchos for sale at many locations in the parks for, at least in Disney terms, not much money. If you are ok with the extreme low budget route, you can ask a cast member at any store for a large bag (i don't really recommend this, but people asked me for them all the time when I worked at the Briar Patch, so you wouldn't be alone). Other than a poncho, you should be sure to bring extra socks and, if possible, multiple pairs of shoes so that you will have dry shoes to wear every day. You could also scotch guard a light jacket (something light enough to keep in something like a backpack) to put on if the rain starts.
