One of my favorite things about the Walt Disney World Resort is all the exquisite little details that the Imagineers use to create an atmosphere. It's these details combined into a larger theme that transports the delights the guest senses and transports them to another time or place. Every now and then in this world of fantasy the Imagineers will even include some genuine cultural treasure. The art and artifacts on display at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge are some of the best.
Kidani Village is home to the Animal Kingdom Villas, the lobby is smaller and more intimate, but just as full of intricate African art.
The Asante people of the African nation of Ghana, cast solid gold faux watches for their royal family as a symbol of power and wealth. These creative pieces celebrate the gold craftsmanship of the Asante people. Gold has been at the heart of their culture for a very long time, and the inventive designs can convey messages from the wearer that are frequently based on African proverbs.
Even today in this modern era the gold adornments worn by the Asante cheiftans are as lavish and elaborate as ever. The watches on display at Kidani Village are actually replicas of a set in the Glassell Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, TX.
In addition to the watches, Disney's Imagineers created an abstract copper alloy clock in the style of the watches that illustrates the theme of TIME. It's something that there never seems to be enough of when one is on a Disney vacation - maybe that's why this faux watches seem so appropriate to me.
Have you ever taken a look at the Asante watches at Kidani Village? Do you ever have enough time? Leave a comment and let us know!
