The lush landscape at the new Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in the Magic Kingdom is all an illusion.
What looks like real grass, trees, and shrubs is actually Disney magic hard at work. There are 350 fake shrubs, 55 synthetic trees, and fake grass at the Mine Train location. But there's also 20,000 real shrubs and 150 live oaks, cedars, and birches at the site.
During the planning stages for the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train it was decided that a "real" lawn would be impractical on the side of the attraction so Disney worked with a Chinese company to develop grass that looked real, right down to the color.
The grass at the attraction was created in a variety of shades to make it look real, including a deep green where it might have rained on the "mountain." The 8-inch and 11-inch tall grasses were created to blow in the Florida breeze and not look like AstroTurf.
Disney Imagineers even used scenes from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs for inspiration when creating the faux grass, trees, and shrubs.
The fake trees were placed by cranes and are welded in place and, since we're talking about Florida, they're also hurricane proof.
