Looking for thrills and adventure in Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom? I've put together a list of my favorite "grown up" attractions including fan favorites and Disney classics in this park that many mistakenly think is just for the kids. Whether you're headed down for a family vacation with older kids, traveling with friends, or on your honeymoon the Magic Kingdom offers guests the classic Disney park experience.
Pirates of the Caribbean: It's a rowdy and raukus adventure on the classic Disney attraction that has inspired an entire franchise with popular movies, games, and even pirate fashion! Stopping by to say "Hi" to Captain Jack is a must do for most Disney fans, and a traditional first stop for my family.
Splash Mountain: The classic log flume ride gets a sunny southern make over in this fun and exciting journey with B'rer Rabbit. Don't let the catchy music and cartoon characters fool you though because you will be getting wet as you plummet five stories down Chickapin Hill at no less than 40 MPH. Be sure to add this attraction to your touring strategy for a Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah day.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: The wildest ride in the wilderness makes it's thrilling adventure through the spires and peaks of Big Thunder Mountain. Hold onto your hats, because you've never been on a train like this one. Take your first ride during the day, but come back at night to experience the attraction in a whole new way! Riding this one after dark ads a whole new element of adventure.
Haunted Mansion: No visit to the Magic Kingdom should be without a spooky jaunt through this home to 999 happy haunts. The interactive queue and amusing gloom of the cast members who welcome you are just two of the ways this attraction sets the stage even before you get to the door.
Space Mountain: Speeding through the dark on a nearly invisible track makes this action packed adventure a must for thrill seekers! Completely enclosed in the futuristic mountain shaped dome, this thrill ride is open rain or shine. We highly advise riding before lunch.
Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin: Ready to get competitive? Space Ranger Spin puts your gaming skills to the test as you compete against your companions to see who can get the highest score while on this adventure to conquer the evil Emperor Zurg. Combining classic Toy Story elements with shoot 'em up fun Space Ranger Spin is makes our list because it's just plain fun.
Tomorrowland Transportation Authority People Mover: Gliding high above Tomorrowland this classic Disney attraction makes the list for it's great view, relaxing pace, and generally short lines. It may not be a thrill ride, but it's a must do for many a Disney fan.
These are just a few of my favorite stops in Magic Kingdom and I supplement them with special treats, like a Dole Whip from Aloha Isle, some serious shopping on Main Street USA, and finish with a spectacular viewing of the Wishes fireworks! Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom isn't just for kids and still brings the magic home to even the most skeptical of Disney guests.
Thanks so much to Joe Penniston and Bucky Schwarz for their great images through Creative Commons. What's your favorite way to spend a grown up day at Disney? Leave a comment and let me know!
