In this day and age, just about everyone has heard about Uber, but lots of people may not be familiar with exactly how it works or might be wary of giving it a try on vacation. Living in a small town, I had never experienced Uber until we decided to try it out on our Walt Disney World vacation a year ago. Let me tell you: it is a game changer! We now use it multiple times on every trip and don't know how we managed without it.
Without a rental car, Disney transportation has been our primary option in the past, but especially with an antsy or overtired toddler, the waits at those bus stops can be less than magical. Now that we have discovered Uber, if we see a long line at the bus stop we pull up the fare estimator, check the current price and nearest driver, and decide whether the cost is worth the time saved. Spoiler: we almost always decide it is. I can't tell you how great it is at the end of a long day at the parks, a cranky two-year old slung over your shoulder, to approach a bus stop of people five lines deep, only to turn right around and within five minutes be hopping into a private car to be taken directly to your resort. Heaven. The best part? You don't even need to have cash on you! Your credit card or PayPal account is linked right to the app so the payment is made automatically and no money needs to change hands on you trip. Almost as great as a Magic Band, huh?
Have I convinced you yet? Good. Now here are my top tips and tricks for using Uber to get around Walt Disney World.
Know Your Uber Choices
Know Your Pickup Spot
When you open the app, the pickup location will default to your current spot. At most of the parks, the Uber driver will pick you up at the taxi area. At the resorts, pickup is generally at the main entrance (the same spot Magical Express may have dropped you off). You cannot schedule an Uber pickup at the Magic Kingdom. You can, however, walk to The Contemporary and request an Uber pickup from there.
Use the Fare Estimator
Don't risk getting sticker shock after you have already completed your Uber ride. Pull up the handy, dandy fare estimator, enter your destination location and which Uber service you would like, and an estimated range of pricing will be provided before you schedule your trip.
Know What to Do If Something Goes Wrong
Leave your phone in the Uber? I've been there. Go to riders.uber.com/lost and just login. You will be able to select your last Uber trip and be provided with a number to reach your driver. If you have an Uber trip scheduled that has not yet been completed, you can select the "Contact" button in the app to be connected directly to your driver, as well.
Don't Be Scared!
Nervous to give it a shot? Don't be! Once you have booked your Uber trip, you will be provided with a license plate number and picture of your driver that you can verify upon pickup. You can also check your Uber driver's ratings on the app beforehand.

This might be a great way of getting to MCO for the trip back home, without having to leave for the airport 3 hours before your flight on MDE, which translates to more time at the parks. Any idea on the cost of a one-way fare from BWV to MCO? Thanks for the tips on Uber... We might give it a go this November during our Food & Wine Festival trip.

Uber has a Fare Estimator tool for every city they're in. You can check out all your potential WDW related trips before you ever leave your house!

Great article Allie. I read today on Facebook (not sure how accurate it is) that Disney is looking to start their own Uber type service.

You all are too sweet! Thanks for the support, guys! JoAnn, I would be totally on board with that as long as the prices and services remain competitive. We all know Disney does it best, but they also usually do it the most expensive! LOL

I've used Uber many times in Orlando and it's Great, only 12 dollars from Disney Springs to City Walk. I had a cab give me a estimate of 40 dollars for the same trip.
I do have one question though, has any one taken Uber to or from Epcot and if so where did they pick you up?
Allie wrote on Thu, 08/25/2016 - 23:01:
I have taken one from Epcot, Trey. We actually had to use the app to call our Uber driver because we couldn't find him. He ended up picking us up in the Journey parking lot just behind the bus area. If you get lost I would recommend just calling your driver from the app if you're not sure of the correct pick up location.
