Walt Disney World Restaurants Harvests Unserved Food for Local Food Bank

There is a growing trend among major restaurant chains that involves "harvesting" unused food for local food banks, and Walt Disney World has been participating for many years.

The Walt Disney World Resort has been operating a harvest program for more than two decades, and the company has a food harvest truck that picks up food daily from every Disney World restaurant, convention center, and the theme parks' catering service.

The unused food that is harvested each day is delivered to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. The food is then distributed to after-school programs in the area.

Nancy Gidusko, director of corporate citizenship for the Walt Disney World Resort said the harvest program feeds about 1,000 kids each week, including kids at the Central Florida Boys and Girls Club.

In 2013 the Walt Disney World Resort donated more than 56,000 pounds of food to the Second Harvest Food Bank.
