The Mulan live-action short film is slated to begin production this fall. Zhang Ziui, the star of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Memoires of a Geisha will plan Mulan. This new version of the movie, based on the Chinese folktale, will be independently produced in a joint venture between companies based out of Canada, the UK and Beijing. Most westerners know the story of Mulan from the 1998 Disney animated feature of the same name.
Bringing the film to the screen is Director Jan de Bont, who is credited with Speed, Twister and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, among other films. No doubt the live-action version will be an action-packed retelling of Mulan " the Chinese heroine who joined an all-male army.
No release date is slated as of yet, but production should wrap up in January of 2011.
