Add on points - direct vs resale?

Hey everyone,

So, we are not even a year into our DVC purchase and are already thinking of adding on 50 to 100 more points. Yeah, it's an addiction of sorts. Was wondering if there is any huge difference between buying direct or resale (besides slightly lower cost with resale).

I like to keep things simple so we would like to end up with more points in our contract with the same resort (Poly) and use year. Difference in price per points isn't that much with the Poly. $145 vs $171 per point.

My understanding is that buying buying direct allows you to match up the use year of the new points. But you can also purchase resale and pick a contract of the same use year. Either way, you end up with same use year and resort and with a different contract number for the new points.

Is there a significant advantage to buying the add on points from Disney?

We will probably end up adding direct because of the convenience and immediate availability of points but I just wanted to research the alternatives a bit. We heard somewhere that Disney does not charge closing costs on small add ons?

Lots of articles online about buying DVC initially, but not much specific to adding on.

Thanks! mickey

Since your contract is already through Disney I do not think there is any real difference other than price. That being said, we have always added on directly through Disney. Like you, we like keeping it simple.

It would be much more simple adding on through Disney. With resale, you have to wait until the number of points with your use year come up, then wait for Right of First Refusal, then closing. It can be a long process, especially if Disney happened to exercise their Right of first refusal waiting

I both bought and added on through Disney with no problems. We paid cash for our add-on, we're at a different resort (by choice) and have the same use year on both contracts. I think that Spook nails the downside, which is mostly in time and effort the purchase takes. There is also the limited use of resale points.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Definitely something to think about. However, knowing us, we'll probably just end up buying direct due to the sheer convenience of doing so.
