Animal Kingdom's Flame Tree closing for refubishment 1/5/15

Just a quick note from the WDWFG team mickey

Flame Tree BBQ at Animal Kingdom will be going down for a refurb starting Monday, January 5, 2015.
So far, Disney has said it will be reopening "in the spring." Rumors are just basic things like expanded seating, and possibly more overhead coverage in the area where people wait to get in line (but that's just rumor).

It is anticipated that Disney might place some of the popular items from Flame Tree at other food kiosks around the park. Keep an eye on the Disney Food Blog for more details.

I think that it's WAY too popular for that to happen. Breathe easy!

My understanding is that they are enhancing the seating areas, mutters on the net of some more overhead protection and an expansion.

I can't imagine going to AK and not having lunch at Flame Tree BBQ... eek I'm hoping that it will re-open by our May trip this year. I don't know what I would do if I couldn't get me some Flame Tree BBQ sad

If you really want your BBQ grub at Disney without spending a ton of money, you can give new Smokehouse counter service place over at Downtown Disney a try.

Updated info added on 1/7/2015:

It's come to my attention that they are spreading out the Flame Tree menu items throughout the numerous kiosks in the park. More info can be seen here:

I guess I'll use this as an opportunity to try something new. I saw something about a mac and cheese hot dog in AK. I think I'll seek that out.

Nope, we don't care for it either. Tried it once and never had a desire to go back.

I can take it or leave it, the BBQ is OK but not the best I've ever had. I'm not a fan of the past seating arrangements, I'm hoping that the remodel is more to my liking. I'm a Yak & Yeti girl too, and I've had some great food at Tamu Tamu.

The article mentions a BBQ Chicken Salad at Trilobites...
does anyone know if this is a lettuce salad with chunks of BBQ Chicken on it?
or is it a chicken salad mixed up with mayo, celery, etc. ?

The way I see it is that if you come a place that is really known for authentic BBQ like Texas, Kansas City, Memphis or the Carolinas, it's not going to compare to Flame Tree BBQ. Just like Via Napoli won't trump the quality, taste and/or preference of your favorite pizzeria (Which I hope isn't a chain like Pizza Hut or Papa Johns yuck) But Flame Tree does stand out because that's really the only decent spot in the theme parks that serves really good BBQ and it's something different from the typical burgers, pizza and fries crowd. BBQ food is definitely noticeable if it's done right or wrong in every aspect you can think of. Being from NJ where there isn't a whole lot of BBQ joints to begin with, Flame Tree does stand out in a good way with its great tastes and flavors, making it one of my favorites at the Animal Kingdom.

I really wanted to try it in October but that day the queue was huge and I was starving so I went to Tamu Tamu instead - that meal turned out to be awesome but FTB is on my list of places I want to try.
