Anybody been to Yak and Yeti??

Is this worth it?? Is it busy enough that we need reservations?

Didn't seem terribly busy when we were there, but IMO you pretty much need reservations everwyhere in WDW. And since for the most part there's no downside to making them, why risk it?

As far as the food it was actually decent, but maybe my expectations were low. Doing 'foreign cuisine' like Chinese at a Disney restaurant is always a dicey proposition.

Wasn't too bad when we were there, but it had really just opened.

I imagine it will go the way of Marrakesh and Akershus and become "the place nobody wants to eat because it's ethnic food," which would be too bad. It's a fun atmosphere and the food is quite good.

I thought the decor was pretty cool. Plus anything gets props for being in the ANIMAL KINGDOM.

I have heard some good things about it, but haven't been. I will probably try the C/S area first, just in case I end up not liking it.

Mmmmm, spring rolls.

Any Thai influence? Sorry, just too lazy to go look up the menus.

They are very much standard Chinese Buffet rolls. They aren't like thai or vietnamese spring rolls. But good ones! Yak and Yeti table service is a bit better quality and more fusion than the counter service. I actually enjoyed it pretty well for a "ethnic" WDW food experience (not always their strong suit).

I heard the fried green beans are really good. Has anyone tried them?

Would love to hear a review...

Hi,

I ate at Yak and Yeti in 2007 and thought it was delicious. I would eat there again.

I'm a huge fan of ethnic restaurants, but not such a fan of counter service. Still, the prices look great. I'd certainly try it. Couldn't be worse than the Chinese place I ate at in Epcot.

Well I'd say the "non counter service" version of Y&Y is actually pretty good.

I guess I read the above posts a little too quickly. I clicked on the link for the menu and it said counter service, and I assumed that's all there was. Yeah, the table service menu looks much better. I'd do that in a heartbeat.

I've got to tell you I was pretty disappointed with the quality of Yak & Yeti. And I had some heated conversations with the owner of the parent company after I reviewed it for the local paper (it's operated by Landry's, which also has the Rainforest Cafe and the newly opened T-Rex). His argument to me was that when he dined there with several Disney execs everything was fine -- well, yeah!! I dined there as a park guest and I thought the food was dismal. I hope they've made improvements. With it being the only full-service (sit-down) restaurant inside the park, it's bound to get a lot of tired -- and unsuspecting -- diners.

My expectations might have been low enough that I was impressed. I thought it was basically "not bad Asian food," which is pretty good for WDW. Maybe I was just craving something ethnic, which is not Disney's forte.

From Scott's article:

"Why don't the Disney Culineers demand oversight to protect quality assurance, or at least insist that the food be average?"

I completely agree, Scott. I often avoid non-Disney eating establishments because, you're correct, there's rarely the same quality control as there is Disney-controlled restaurants.

When I do choose to go to another spot, I always go with slightly lowered expectations.

Unfortunately, to the average guest, it isn't always clear that the restaurant is owned by an outside operator, especially when pains are taken to make it look Disneylike, such as insisting the staff wear the Disney name tags.
By the way, YakYet is operated by Landry's, which also has Rainforest Cafe and the newly opened T-Rex, which I've reviewed on the flog. I think they're starting to catch on that diners want more than just a splashy decor.

waiting Good morning!

In response to cdub's question on the night of October 13, 2008, I did have a look at the menu for Yak and Yeti on www.allearsnet.com/. I had the wonton soup and the beef and broccoli, because I guess I'm not too adventurous an eater. I enjoyed it at the time, but considering that I took until now to remember what I had, it must have been otherwise unremarkable.

Great review, Scott. I've not been to the restaurant yet and probably would have bypassed it as I'm not at all a big fan of the Rainforest Cafes, but now I might take a peek. crossfingers
