Behind the Magic

Anyone read any books or otherwise gotten into the wonderful world of 'hidden' Disney magic most people miss?

I've heard there are lots of little treasures to be found, but have always been so taken with the things on the surface I didn't have time to notice anything more. Well I was looking at WDW books at Border's on my lunch today and found a very interesting book about the 'Hidden Magic of WDW'. Interesting enough to warrant a purchase, in fact. I've heard about the hidden Mickey's and other little things like that, but I had no idea there was SO MUCH extra stuff to find all over each of the parks.

What's your take on this kind of thing? Any experiences you've had or stories about things you've found (minus spoilers maybe?)?

p.s. I was going to post this at some point anyway, but the behind the scenes tour thread really got me excited.

That kind of thing is right up my alley. I love the behind the scenes stuff, and the history behind the attractions and structures that we love.

A good series of books to read is the Imagineer's Field Guides. These books truly let you see the parks through the eyes of an Imagineer. So far they've released one for Disneyland and all of the WDW theme parks except Disney Hollywood Studios, which come out soon, from what I understand.

Oh yeah, me too. I can't wait to investigate all this stuff. From what I've read in this book, it is top notch.

Agreed that this is a great series of books. I'm especially interested in all of the concept art that they show.

I've heard of the Hidden Disney book, but haven't seen it in bookstores.

Life--are you taking a behind the scenes tour?

Not this time. This will be my wife's first REAL trip to the World. As I've mentioned she's been to Disneyland Tokyo as a young child and WDW once in school, but that was a whirlwind tour. It's almost like she's never been.

Good thinking! Let her experience the pixie dust before you go see how it's made!

That's what I'm thinking. For me, it's not that way. Seeing how things work makes it all the more special for me.

Wasn't going to mention the full info on the book, but it is just too good to keep to myself.

It's called The Hidden Magic of Walt Disney World, feel free to click to link to learn more. I have found it to be very enjoyable and quite informative. There have been a few things I knew about, but many I did not. One of the things I like is it actually addresses some Disney folk-lore - you know how us Disney fans are. So at times, it gives both the common lore/rumor on the topic and then gives the real info straight from a difinitive source. Reading those Amazon reviews, I totally disagree with the few somewhat negative ones. One said it could ruin things for them. As another reviewer commented (under that review), these are secrets Disney WANTS us to find. They enhance the experience. Another said these things 'weren't secret enough'...WHAT!? Don't know what that guy's looking for; Jimmy Hoffa?

In any case, awesome book. I'm really enjoying it and can't wait to look for some of these things.

Thanks for the recommendation LifeIsForLiving! I think a lot of us read a lot of interesting books about Disney so I started a Disney Reading List thread.
