Camping at Fort Wilderness

So, since we live an hour away and are on a limited budget, it's been many many years since we have stayed at Disney. We live vicariously through all of you, and visit the resorts regularly.
We decided to take a mini-vacation - camping at Fort Wilderness! We leave tomorrow and will come home Tuesday, then go to my parents in Fort Myers Weds. for Thanksgiving.
We have been to the campgrounds but never stayed there. I am worried because we are tent camping and I'm afraid it will be cold at night for me, forecast is 50s. I think it will be more like resort tent camping, with all the amenities they have. We are planning on taking advantage of the emh each day and will plan our days accordingly. We will spend most of tomorrow at the campgrounds, then most of Mon and Tues at the parks, but back and forth depending on who wants to do what when. We have a basic plan but it's very flexible. I think we will eat most meals at the campground, we like to cook out and do some camping foods which is fun. We are planning on using the Disney transportation most of the time, and it will be nice to not have to drive home each night.
Has anyone ever CAMPED at Fort Wilderness (cabins don't count)? Any hints? We have all the camping stuff, but don't camp all that often. This should be a whole new Disney experience for us!

Disney Doc, I'll see if I have your pm still w your #, if not, I'll pm you mine. We'll be in the parks Sun. night, Mon and Tues.

And, I'll get to do a TRIP REPORT, I've never done one, yeah!

Have fun Julie! Can't help you with that, the closest Scrappy ever comes to camping is the Hampton Inn with no Wi Fi! rolling rolling

Yay! My parents camped at FW last year, although it was a motorhome not a tent. But, since you will have an electrical hook-up, maybe bring an extension cord and a small electric heater? I'd also suggest printing a copy of the bus routes (there's a .pdf on the WDW site), I've heard the internal bus routes in FW can be a bit confusing if you're not prepared.

Depending on how close you are to the boat launch, I'd suggest using the boat transportation. You can take a boat to MK and even take the boat to the Contemporary and hop on the monorail (with a transfer at the TTC) to Epcot. We frequently do this from the Wilderness Lodge because we will pretty much do anything to avoid the buses! haha!

Hope you have the BEST time ever! And Happy Thanksgiving! mickey

Thanks Becca! We've taken the boat over to Ft Wilderness many times and looked around, but never stayed there. Good to know about the bus, I'll keep that in mind. We looked at the little electric heaters and can get one for under $20, but Mike doesn't think we'll need one. Me, I'm cold if it's less than 80. I'm packing flannels to sleep in. Tonight it's not too bad and I think it's supposed to be about the same. Just went to the gym in shorts and a sweatshirt and I'm good.
I think it will be super fun!
Have a great Thanksgiving!

Well, we're here and almost set up (and we have Wi-Fi!). Small glitch, someone didn't grab the tent stakes and the roof for the tent, so he had to drive all the way home to get them...no names though. So we are here and set up and thinking of taking a nap before emh 12-3am. Dinner is cooking in the fire.
I am not a big camper, I definitely prefer the H buildings...but it's fun once a year or so to rough it and spend some good old fashioned family time. Usually we don't have cell service or wi-fi, which is really roughing it, so we're livin it up here! It's really nice here, guess that's why it's called a "camping resort".

So glad that you're having fun!

Yikes about forgetting the tent roof. Good thing it's a fairly easy drive.

Yes but that way you could "sleep under the stars". Smile
My idea of camping and roughing it is not having a microwave.

Sounds like a lot of fun! Care to share how the facilities are?

TR will be delayed, til I get to it! It's a fast turn around for us, got home today, unpack, laundry and re-pack to go to Ft Myers tomorrow. I'm organizing my trip report in my head...here's a teaser...IT WAS COLD!!!!! so cold we had to go to Walmart and buy a heater! It was in the low 50s at night and didn't really warm up much yesterday, it might have been 62, with no sun! That is the equivilant of freezing for us Florida people, and no sunshine, what??? Even the northerners were complaining and bundled up!
More to come, thanks for the encouragement, and I'm the first camping TR, I'm honored!
