These things are all the rage with the elementary school set...DH is a teacher...and he reports that the kids LOVE them. So much so that the district in the neighboring county has banned them in school. The kids are collecting them like Pokemon cards!
Oh...they're like rubber bands. DH had one one his wrist one day and I too was like "what is that?"...

Not just elementary -- my middle school kids collect them like crazy too!
Zipadeedoodah -- yeah, man
So they're like...shaped rubber bands?
Not just kids at all. I see them on adults (then snicker as I walk away).
I teach third grade...these are the ONLY thing the kids want out of my prize box now! They are just shaped rubber bands! It's crazy. I'm probably one of those nutty adults wearing them because my kids keep beinging me them, especially Disney princess ones because they know I'm a Disney but, and I forget to take them off. Last Friday I left school and went to dinner with Buzz Lightyear on my wrist. They trade them and wear them like they are gold! It's so funny.
I am a teacher too and all my kids go nuts for them! We have a store and the kids can buy them for 150 tokens and they go crazy saving for them. Some of them even wear them half way up their arm.
Nutso.
This is one of those things though that makes me mad that I didn't think of it first.
Um...can we bottle this motivation and use it to get these kids to do something awesome like...volunteer in the community, save money for college, learn a new language...??? People always say kids are lazy and unmotivated -- clearly they're not, they're just not motivated by the right things.
Hmm...reminds me of someone else I know...like me and DW with Disney World

Wow. I was 100% in the dark about this phenomenon. Do you find being a teacher keeps you more in touch with what the "kids these days are up to?"

Yes! They are always telling me what they watch or what they play and bringing stuff into class. It definitely keeps you on your toes b/c their interests change every week!
I feel the same way! They are always coming in telling me about shows they watch or clothes they want...it keeps me young!

It seemed really short. How long would you estimate the craze lasted?
Maybe 2 years?
We opened in Nov 2009, which was well into it and couldn't keep them in stock. By easter 2010 things had slowed down significantly. In summer 2010 we put them on sale buy 1 get 1 free, we still have a ton left.

So what's hot now?
Nothing we carry.
Though Jacob's Ladders have been very popular in the store as of late.
We mainly have games, hobbies, and classic toys. We only picked up on them because people kept asking for them. We haven't had repetitive requests for something like that again.
Of course, we do have the continuing Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon and Magic the Gathering Card Game/Card Collectors.

Wow do people still play Yu-Gi-Oh? I got the impression that wasn't a very well-designed game.
I don't play it, but we have Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments (or at least people playing it) almost every Sat afternoon in the store and we sell packs and singles like crazy.
