Disney Marathon

Anyone planning on doing the Disney World Marathon coming next January? I just registered and I can't wait! I've done the New York City marathon twice, and plan on doing it for a 3rd year this November. Any runners out there who plan on attending either, let me know! I just looked at the map of the Disney race and it looks awesome. It goes through the parks and I'm sure it will be lots of fun!

Wow thats awesome! Congrats on signing up for your first race! Its an awesome feeling crossing the finish line after you've worked so hard. My favorite part is after a race going out with friends or family. Let me know how it goes for you, and I hope you stick with it! Unfortunately I havent done a Disney race before... Ive wanted to do the Marathons but this will be the first January that I wont be at college while it is going on.

If you ever need any advice or whatever feel free to ask! Good luck!

I played a lot of sports growing up in school so I had to run a lot to stay in shape. I also work at a boxing gym in the summer, a lot of running there. I did my first marathon (NYC) 3 years ago. I really loved it, its fun training for something and trying to beat your time of the previous year. I like trying to do 5k's and 10k's. Unlike the big marathons you aren't running in a "herd." For the first 10 mins of the marathon you're lucky if you can even walk because of so many people in front of you.

I cant wait for the Disney one!

I did the Wine and Dine Half last year. I loved it! It was a great experience and I'd love to do it again, although I'm skipping this year as I work on other fitness goals.

I used to run like a fiend when I was younger, but now I just run the washing machine. Sad

Do you guys have any tips or tricks for getting me back in the saddle? I would think that having a "runDisney" goal as my carrot out front would be really encouraging for me, but, honestly at this point, I just don't know where to start!!

I'm so impressed with you guys for your willpower to get out there and run marathons!! clapping

I would start with a Disney 5K! They're the perfect Disney race for beginners, lots of fun and very gentle in the leway they allow in the pace requirement.

There are some great "couch to 5K" programs out there that can get you back in the groove in about 10 weeks. biggrin

Kristen - Thanks so much for the tip! I need to check out one of the "couch to 5K" program! Do you run 5Ks? Disney or otherwise?

I have done 2 Disney 5Ks and had a great time!

I've walked them though, I don't run yet. I want to, but I've had a series of setbacks due to some health problems. I really want to do the Princess 1/2 Marathon, but the farthest I've been to this point is a 5K. My BFF is training for the TOT 10 Miler at the moment.

Whew! A 10 miler! Runners are so impressive to me!

But I'm super impressed by you that you completed to 5Ks...that's awesome...just walking it is impressive to me!

I'm trying to get back in the saddle...can't see myself as a marathoner, but never say never, right?? Smile

A great way to build stamina running is sticking to a schedule, and not pushing too hard at the beginning. Start by walking 5 minutes, running 2 minutes then walking 5 minutes. Now you're done for the first day. Not too bad right? Then the next day just walk 10 minutes. The third day walk 5 minutes, run 3 minutes, and walk 5 minutes. This gradual increase over time will have you running miles in no time! Make sure to take a day off, days off are more beneficial then the days you push yourself the hardest! Let me know if you have any questions!

Sammy - Thanks!

So, seriously, the first day just 5 min walk, 2 min run, then 5 min walk, and that's it? I could do that! Smile

And how come the days off are so beneficial?

Thank you for all your help!

Off days let your body rest and recover and build stronger muscles. When working out you are actually tearing the muscles. When you rest it gives them time to rebuild.

I'm considering the Disney Princess Half. I think the disney half is closed right now, and I am doing a half ironman in october so the 10 miler was out.

I agree you guys are such an inspiration biggrin
what is the Half Ironman? It sounds pretty hard!

Also, I'm in need of some advice. I've been keeping up with my 3 days a week training for my 5K. Mondays I run (well run/walk) 3.8K, Wednesdays are 4.4K and then Fridays are the full 5K. I've never run more than that but I really want to do a half next year (or at least some year). The only problem I have is my mind set is this "I really want to run a half but i know i can't do it". Any ideas on how to get myself into a more positive and can do attitude?

Honestly after that first 5k it's gonna give you so much motivation! Im super competitive so I play little games with myself, to try and push harder. Yesterday I ran 3? Well 3.5 shouldn't be too hard... And so on. Also not sure if you would be into it or not, but check out Nike+ its a website where it tracks your runs and you can add friends so you see how much they ran, and shows routes of people nearby.

Hopefully once I run the 5K i'll catch the running bug. And I hope it'll last and keep me motivated! That Nike+ site sounds cool but i've never really been very good and keeping up with stuff like that Puzzled

I'm running the WDW half in January. I wanted to do the full, but my sister-in-law asked me to run the half with her, so I am! We are staying for 6 days after the race, so I'm super excited! It's my first Disney race, but will be my 5th or 6th half.

I just watched a segment on CBS Saturday Morning where they said lying to yourself can be a good thing! He said that especially in terms of motivation, when you say things like "A 5K? I can do that in my sleep." "Running a 7 minute mile? Easy peasy!" He says we're quick forgetters, so even though we KNOW we're lying to ourselves about these things, we forget QUICKLY, and so whatever we tell ourselves is true, we're likely to think IS true. Could be bull, but I'm totally giving it a try this week with my exercise routine!! Smile

Nancy, I found the Couch to 5k plan to be really good and totally achievable. I started with it the first time (for the Wine and Dine) and now I'm doing it again, but I'm really slowing the pace down to increase my cardio fitness, doing each "week" for 2 or three weeks. It amazes me how quickly you can build fitness if you stick with a routine! Good luck!

Lizzy - Thanks so much for the info! That's neat how you're stretching out your weeks to increase the cardio...thanks for the "spin" on the couch to 5K routine....good stuff!!

I was just on the Disney Store site and saw that they now have a bunch of training gear (shirts, hoodies, jackets) for the half marathon, full and Goofy challenge. I want a jacket and hoodie so bad! I wish they didn't have 2013 on them. Since i'm not running in any of those races (yet anyways wink ) I'd feel silly wearing the gear. I wish they had nice hoodies and jackets for generic rundisney training. I feel like wearing them would help motivate me awesome

Yes Team in training supports the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. I've done a race every year for the last 4-5 years with them had to drop last year due to breaking my leg.

Two of my good friends lost very close relatives to these cancers. One lost a sister born on the same day as herself 9 years appart to Hodgkins, the other lost his son 4 months younger than my daughter to the stem cell transplant's complications.

A half ironman is a triathlon half the distance of a full ironman. The standard distance for a triathlon is known as Olympic .9 mile swim, 24 mile bike, and a 6.2 mile run. I did one of these in 2009. The ironman is a 2.5 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and a 26.2 marathon. I am unable to do a full marathon due to health reasons so no full ironman either. I will be doing a half however which is 1.25 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and a 13.1 mile run!

I'm pretty excited about it Smile.

Well I'm proud of myself! Since I had my heart attack last August, I've stopped smoking and have been using a tread mill everyday. I'm 51 years old, 222 lbs, and smoked since I was 12-14 yo. Well when I started the tread mill I was doing about a 20 minute walk and my pace was at 21-22. Monday I broke my first 16 min mile pace, which was a goal for me. I feel better then I have in many years. I have not lost any weight, but I have not gained either. No, it's not a 7 minute mile, but I'm not a runner and never plan on being one. (Although I wouldn't mind having one of those Disney medals). I'm just walking for my life! Just wanted to put that out there cuse I feel good about it. biggrin
