Disney Wonder / New Orleans Trip Report

When Disney Cruise Line announced they were sailing out New Orleans, I just had to book a cruise. I love Disney. I love New Orleans. It was the best of both worlds.

I am going on the cruise with friends Memoree and Abby. We fly to New Orleans the day before the cruise. Mem and I are arriving on the same flight from Chicago and will meet Abby at the airport. We will take a taxi to our hotel for the night. Mem has never been to New Orleans (it's her first cruise too). I am planning on hitting the tourist spots. First stop is lunch at Mother's (depending on the line) or Johnny's Po Boys. We will explore the French Quarter before cocktails (a Hurricane, of course) at Pat O'Brien's. I also invited members of the Facebook cruise group to meet us if they are available. A trip to NOLA is not complete without beignets from Cafe Du Monde. It probably won't be a late night since we will all be up early for our flights.

Our port arrival time isn't until 1:00 so I am planning on breakfast at the Red Gravy (I've never been but have heard good things). We'll also stop for a bottle or two of wine to bring on the ship. Then we are off to the port.

Cruise day 1: After boarding the ship and getting some lunch, we are meeting with the cruise group members for a group picture before the muster drill. We will review the navigator app to plan our activities for the week (my favorites are silent dj, trivia games and Match Your Mate).

Cruise day 2: Day at sea. I am organizing a pub crawl with the cruise group. I can't take all the credit for it. Someone organized it for my Alaskan cruise so I'm using the same schedule. We are having dinner at Palo. I haven't had dinner there and am looking forward to it. I booked it for this day as it formal night. We only have to dress up once on the cruise.

Cruise day 3: Key West. We are going to the Southern Most Point (it's mandatory when visiting, right?), lunch at Hard Rock Cafe and finding some key lime pie. We'll play the rest by ear depending on time.

Cruise day 4: Nassau. When Abby and I went on our first cruise, we had booked the Ardasta Gardens and City Tour. The cruise was right after hurricane Matthew and the tour was canceled. We booked it again as a do-over.

Cruise day 5: Castaway Cay. We are starting the day off with the Castaway Cay 5K and then just relaxing for the rest of the day.

Cruise day 6: Day at sea. We are booked for the Stem to Stern wine tasting and mixology.

Cruise day 7: Day at sea. We are booked for the Chocolate & Liquor tasting.

Cruise day 8: back to New Orleans

The trip doesn't end here because it is the first weekend of Mardi Gras!! My brother and sister-in-law and some friends are flying in the day before to meet us for the weekend after the cruise. The weekend will consist of drinking, parade watching and eating. Abby is flying home on Saturday, Mem on Sunday and me on Monday. The timing was perfect enough with at the first weekend of Mardi Gras and was even better when I realized Monday is President's Day which I have off from work.

I've been New Orleans several times over the years. I've always gone with my brother. The day before the cruise will be the first time I'll be there without him. I will be the tour guide and not just following him. I have been studying the map of NOLA - I got this.

I got a text from Southwest that my flight from Hartford to Chicago Midway was canceled. Luckily, they were able to rebook me on another flight getting into New Orleans 2 1/2 hours later.

At the airport. Got here earlier than I needed to be. I wanted to see if the ticket agent could work her magic and get me in earlier. No luck. I am grateful I am still able to get there today.

I am finishing up breakfast. Wanted a mimosa but they can't serve until 9:00. Stupid state law.

I finally made it to New Orleans around 4:00. Abby's and Memoree's flights were delayed too so we all arrived within 45 minutes of each other. Once we all had our luggage, we grabbed a taxi and went to our hotel.

After checking in, we went to dinner at Mother's. Had to get a debris sandwich and some red beans & rice. We were off to the French Quarter. We walked down Bourbon Street and stopped at Pat O'Brien's for a Hurricane. We didn't stay out late as it had been a long day for all of us.

I was up early the next morning. Who can sleep on cruise day??!!

I got showered and went to get coffee in the lobby while the Abby and Memoree got ready. We walked down towards the French Quarter for breakfast at Red Gravy. I had cannoli pancakes. They did not disappoint. We stopped for a couple of bottles of wine to bring on board on our way back to the hotel. We grabbed our luggage out of the room and waited in the lobby until it was time to call for an Uber to the port.

Traffic was horrendous on the way to port. Once we arrived, we got checked in pretty quickly and boarded right away. We were introduced as the JAM family. Our cabin was ready so we went straight there before hitting Cabanas for lunch.

After lunch, we had a meet up with the Facebook cruise group followed by the muster drill. Then it was time for the Sail-A-Wave party. Normally during the party we would actually sail away. Not this cruise, we didn't leave for a couple of hours. Being this was the inaugural cruise out of New Orleans there was a lot of press coverage.

Before dinner, we had a drinks in the French Quarter Lounge. This was one of the spaces that was refurbed during dry dock. I absolutely loved what they did with this space. Dinner was at Tiana's Place.

Our first full day on the ship was a day at sea. After I got ready for the day, I went to the Cove Cafe for a latte while waiting for Mem and Abby. After they were ready, we had breakfast in cabanas and then took the Art of the Theme Show Tour. This is an adult only ship tour offered. I've done this tour on every cruise I've been on. I love learning about the decor around the ships.

We kept ourselves busy this day. We tried napkin folding which was a lot of fun and did some trivia. This night was formal night and I booked Palo for us for dinner. This was a first for all of us. Abby and I have done Palo brunch. We loved dinner there too. By booking in on formal night, we only had to dress up once. Before dinner, we attended the Captain's Gala.

Palo dinner deserves a post of its own. It was the best meal of the cruise.

Below are the starters and main course I ordered

Baby Arugula
Gnocchi in a prosecco wine sauce
Prime Beef Tenderloin

For dessert, I couldn't decide if I wanted the chocolate souffle or the amoretto souffle. When in doubt, order both. While they were both amazing. The amoretto souffle was the winner for me.

We made it to our first port - Key West. This was the first for all 3 of us. Before we got off the ship, I made my morning stop at the Cove Cafe. We docked at the Naval yard which had a shuttle into town. We weren't allowed to take any pictures while on base. We got dropped off on the corner of Duval and Front Streets. We packed a lot in this day. We got into town around 9:00am and had to be back on the ship by 3:45. Key West has an ordinance all cruise ships have to be out by 4:00 so they are not blocking the sunset.

We decided to have breakfast in town rather than on the ship. I loved the chickens running around town We stopped at a restaurant on Duval Street on our way to the Southern Most Point. On the way there, we walked by this house that had the best mail box. Had to stop for a picture. After taking the mandatory pictures by the Southern Most Point, we went to mile mark 0 followed by The Little White House. We didn't do the tour of The Little White House but went into the free museum in the gift shop. We started heading back towards Duval Street to have a lunch at The Hard Rock Cafe. We ordered a couple of appetizers to share and some tasty drinks. Following lunch, we went to First Flight Brewing Company (had to add another brewery to my list). I ordered a flight for myself and a piece of Key Lime Pie to share. The brewery is located in the original offices of Pan Am Airlines. The pie was good but we decided to try it elsewhere (you know, for research purposes). We stopped at Kermit's Key Lime Pie Shoppe before getting the shuttle back to the ship.

Dinner this night was in Animator's Palette.

Wow those lattes are amazing! Those designs are hard to make. I partially struggled with making the mark of a flat white. The food looks amazing, although the portions with Palo look small. Maybe with them being small is a good thing so you have room for all of the courses. laugh

The next stop was Nassau. We had an excursion booked to the Ardastra Gardens and tour of the city. We had breakfast in Tritons. Before breakfast I got a latte at Cove Cafe.

For our excursion, we met the group in Azure lounge around noon. We toured the city on our way to the Gardens. The Gardens is also a small zoo mostly birds but a few small animals. We were greeted by one of the workers with a snake named Dexter. Our first stop was to feed some of the birds. They also have a flamingo show which I got to be part of.

We were back on the ship around 4:00. Before dinner, we hit the show and trivia. Dinner was at Animator's Palette and it was Pirate Night. I had the Privateer Strip Loan for my main course and ordered a side of rice and peas. It was another two dessert night - Bananas in Paradise and Rum Soaked Chocolate Cake.

We ended the night with fireworks.

The day after Nassau was Castaway Cay day. I was up early to get my daily latte. I stopped by Cabanas for a banana. I was the first guest in the restaurant that morning. We headed off the ship and walked to the starting line for the Castaway Cay 5K.

After our nice leisurely 3 mile walk and getting our bling at the end, we went back to the ship to shower. We went back to the island for lunch and to spend time on the beach. I decided to just sit at the bar and drink. Mem and Abby went in the water. The water was really low that day. They walked as far as they could and came back to join me at the bar.

Dinner was back at Tiana's Place for Mardi Gras night.

The last two full days on the cruise were sea days. We enjoyed the ship's activities. We started off both days with breakfast at Triton's. Wednesday we attended mixology. I like mixology better on the Dream and Fantasy where you make the drinks. On the Wonder, the drinks are premade.

Thursday we bought our placeholders before attending the "Anyone Can Cook Seminar". The chef made apple straddle. It was so good. It came with a glass of wine. We also did chocolate and liquor tasting.
